Hi all. I thought I'd take a stab at a picture thread. I just got my used eBay digital camera -- $60 :) -- , and headed straight downtown this afternoon. I'm not photo-wiz, so this is the best I can do =)

Oh yes, sorry for forgetting info :) On that side of town, people were going to the yearly air show. But there were quite a few people just hanging out at the museums over there, too.

the free stamp shot is one of the best ive seen on this site and there are lots of great pics around here so that is saying a lot.

Proving downtown Cleveland isn't dead by showing people at a particular big event is like me proving to someone an inner city grocery store isn't dead by taking them on the first of the month.

 

Not saying downtown Cleveland is necessarily dead...just saying.

Well said.....downtown Cincy looked great last night after the fireworks, the streets were packed!  Definately not the norm though  :|

Yeah, it was great seeing so many people come together for something. Lots of police on bikes and even though a lot of people complained about the "rednecks" ...well...there's not nearly as many as the amount that show up for red white and boom :]. There also wasn't nearly as much litter on the ground. You were down there? We should have met up.

You cincy people are being too sensitive. I was kidding around with that sentence, for crying out loud.

actually ever since parking was allowed on Voinovich Park that part of downtown has never been more lively with all those pedestrians walking... to their cars!

we decided to take a stroll downtown today to run some errands at tower city. I wanted to go check out e. 4th since I had not been there since Ingenuity and wanted to grab a quick snack at pickwick and frolic. wow. ghost town. nothing was open. we ended up walking back toward w.6th, and little was open there either-despite a fair #  of people walking around. Nauti Mermaid, Map Room and WaterStreet Grill were, and as a result doing decent business.  I am really hoping with more people moving into the e4th gaeway area they will have more open for downtown residents. 

^ i learned this lesson the hard way last year.  one of the mainstays in this area that is almost always open, is winking lizard.  but, it is always closed on sun and mon of labor day weekend. 

 

but, there was a traffic jam of cars coming in on e9. 

^^Yeah, Cleveland goes into a deep slumber on Sundays and holiday Mondays. During Ingenuity, too, few of the downtown restaurants were open. This should be near the top of the agenda of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance: getting stores and restaurants to stay open during big events. It's an easy win for the businesses and visitors alike.

It makes sense since Cleveland is America's Poorest City that that stamp better be free!

I'm not sure I understand this comment....I wasn't being sensitive at all.  I was simply making a comment that downtown Cincy had a similar occurance to downtown Cleveland.  Thats it.

I was on a conference call Friday afternoon with some occupants of Key Tower (I always love doing biz with the Cleveland folks- gives me somethin' to talk about during lulls); every few minutes the call would be drowned out by the sound of jets whizzing by.  Was hysterical.  I had to explain to my co-workers the proximity of Burke to the CBD.

I'm neither a hipster nor a yuppie but there were a lot of people at the South Side (doing a great business because they were open on Labor Day).

Yeah, this is always the case on Sunday's and holidays, and I just don't get it.   It's the Podunk-y part of Cleveland still lurking and I'm glad more restaurants and other stores are fighting back.  I have no idea why the biggest and (2 of) its most upscale restaurants like the Metropolitan and Blue Pointe are shuddered with stacked chairs on the street during these times -- very off-putting, esp for the hotel visitors who are looking for places to go.

 

On the upswing, though, add to the heroes: Constantino's supermarket on W. 9th.  They were not only open on Labor Day, but open with their new extended hours (til 10 p.m.).  Good for them!  Constantino's has been a God send for not only the WHD, but all of downtown (we ran into some Reserve Sq refugees who were griping their market was closed Labor Day).   Constantino's is always bright 'n cheery -- very beautifully appointed -- and the outdoor seating area attracts a number of locals who want to chill, read, WiFi, you name it.  This store has almost overnight helped convert the WHD from a mere entertainment district to an honest to God Chicago/NYC urban neighborhood.  And I think that's why the restaurants that open late and during "dead times" are congregating around the W. 9th area.
