Just north of Frankfort on U.S. 127 is the cool little town of Owenton, Kentucky, seat of Owen County.

Smashing.

The glass on those steps was pretty cool.

wow, i've heard of the place, but never knew.

i am in awe of the brick columns.

You know, I've been through Owenton once and dont recall it being this large.  I seem to recall it was on a high ridge in some hill country..Owen county being quite rolling..

The brick columns...there is another good Kentucky example of this in Georgetown in Scott County, in Georgetown Colleges main hall.  This is only one county away, so I wonder if there is some archictectural connection between the Owen County Courthouse and the Geoergtown building.

I also notice some neat things happening with balconys and bay windows here....as well as the building with the big opening in the front for the stairs.

Nice tour, cute lil town.

Ink,

You have been VERY flattering in your tour of Owenton.  I have been through there about 6 or 7 times before, and never have I thought to bring my camera the next time to give a UO tour (usually that thought is constantly running through my mind).  However, you did a very good job at making Owenton look less IDK...hillbilly than what it really is.

I drive past this building everytime I come into town (it is a neat little stretch...emphasis on little):

^Do you really think so? I mean, it is small, prehaps smaller than it looks here, but I didn't really get too much of a hillbilly feeling. If you haven't gotten off of 127, I'd suggest doing so next time your that direction, it might change your view.

Owenton isn't hillbilly.

You have to travel to places like Irvine or Hazard or Salyersville for that real Appalachian vibe.

Owenton is more of a backwoods or isolated county seat.  In Kentucky the largest town in the county is usually the county seat.  But some county seats are more isolated and rural than others, for various reasons.

In Owentons case it is the Eden Shale belt, which is this hill country surrounding the Inner Bluegrass area around Lexington.  This is broken country not suited for large scale farming, so and some of the county seats in the area are smallish...places like Brookville and Mount Olivet and Carlisle.

You can also see this in Central Kentucky in the Green River country, where county seats up in the so-called "Shawnee Hills" ...this broken plateau countr beyond Mammoth Cave... are smaller than the ones down in the good flat limestone farmland of the Pennyrile.

I've been a few places off the beaten path...and I was not impressed.  But, I will say I have not seen it all and I should not be so quick to judge.  I'll give it a better look over next time I visit.

FYI:  When I say hillbilly I often mean rural (probably not fair of me again).  I just really dislike rural areas, and am not a big fan of those types of environments.  I should be nicer though.

Ink made Owenton look a bit larger than it is.  I lived in Owenton back in 2000 for about a year.  Didn't enjoy it at all.

^Yep, its nothing like the place you lived in during kindergarden, thats for sure. ;)

Wow, you must write everything down!

Nice!
