I'm not sure why this is posted but.....

I don't know why Cleveland was chosen to have this part of the country's reserve branch (only a few across the nation).  But, either way, it is something for Cleveland to be happy it has, just like any other business for that matter.  If I were to guess it was probably put in Cleveland because of its closer location to NYC than any other midwestern city, but anywho I'm just glad its in Cleveland.

(you're not gonna stir up the Cleveland vs. Cincy thing with me) :-D

Well, it's basically in Cleveland as Cincinnati, Columbus, and Pittsburgh are somewhat all half-way

It is posted for entertainment.  I always found it odd that we had a branch of the Cleveland Federal Reserve.  When were the Federal Reserves established, that might provide clues to why Cleveland got the Federal Reserve and not Cincy.

its probably because cleveland is a plum

I didn't know Richmond was a Federal Reserve City.

yeah, i think ive seen the stamp of richmond on bills.

that map is very interesting, it's like a time capsule of a view of the usa from a 1914 viewpoint.

Yep and more proof that St. Louis has ties to the south.

I wonder what the reasoning was behind some of the borders throughout the midwest :|  Looks quite odd if you ask me.

how so? the south looks like the orange.

One of my favorite bits of trivia:

What is the only state to boast two Federal Reserve Banks?

is it Missouri via Kansas City and STL?

^ I believe it is.

Here's another fun tidbit for the geeky at heart. From the Cleveland Fed site (http://www.clevelandfed.org/about/History/twelve.cfm):

When the Federal Reserve Bank was planned, the founders were concerned about possible attacks by mobs, anarchists, and the usual assortment of bank robbers. As a result, steps were taken to provide as much security as possible, with the emphasis placed on guns and firepower.

The main vault is housed in its own building, constructed before and completely separate from the main bank because of its size. The concrete walls are 6 1/2 feet thick, reinforced throughout with an intricate, interlaced type of fabricated steel...

It is said to be the largest vault-door installation in the world. The door is 5 feet thick and has a 47-ton, 19-foot-high hinge. Yet, despite its 100-ton weight, the vault door is so precisely balanced that one person can swing it closed.

... and knowing is half the battle.

and there are slots for gunners to hide out in the steps up to the front door.  you can still see them if you walk by today!

^I remember being shown that on a tour of downtown while in grade school.  Cool stuff.

"and there are slots for gunners to hide out in the steps up to the front door.  you can still see them if you walk by today!"

And the statues on the East 6th entrance were designed to break away to make way for some moderate-sized artillery in case they needed to repel attackers. No sh!t!

^Hopefully, they can be used to attack the (former) BP Building.

It will also be useful if they ever declare war on the library.  They should be easy pickens, as they are hardly fortified at all.

If you ever get a chance to take the tour, do it.  It is an incredible building, with great murals and details.  The former vault is absolutely fantastic.

It appears that when they designed this building, they strategically carved the word "RE$ERVE" in the perfect place. Very clever, I must say.

This is sort of related. Crain's interviews the Cleveland Fed president/CEO, and this is what she had to say about Cleveland...

Why do you suppose Cleveland’s economy has experienced a slowdown?

(note from Jamie: I'm not an economist, but, uhhhhh, maybe one of the reasons is we still call one of our biggest skyscrapers the name of the company that isn't even there anymore...)

I wouldn’t describe it as a slowdown, but it is lagging the national economy. The national level economy has slowed from its strong first-quarter pace. A lot of that has to do with the slowing in the housing market and higher energy prices taking a toll. Here locally, we just learned last week our unemployment rate jumped.

We’re still a region of the country that has a lot of auto assembly and auto parts suppliers.

How would you judge the overall health of Cleveland?

How do you measure economic health? As a community, you can say we want to grow jobs. Well, do you want to grow any kind of job or grow income? I haven’t looked at Cleveland, but how do you measure Cleveland? There’s the whole (Census Bureau) report that the city proper is No. 1 in poverty in the country. You need to be careful in how you measure that and how you measure a region.

Oh, what an insightful conversation.

LOL...I didn't even notice that.

Nice catch!
