Posted September 12, 200618 yr you guys will love this one from curbed blog. look at the crazy tumor extension. who can sleep safely in that thing? or below it for that matter? :-o its in the east village in manhattan. Reader Comments (6 extant) 1. huh? By anomallous at September 7, 2006 9:55 AM2. it's pretty goofy looking. that bricked up window on the top floor makes a lot of sense too, since its new construction. By Anonymous at September 7, 2006 9:58 AM3. I've referred to it as the tumor building for several months now. I suspect the bricked over window is covering some sort of angled steel truss to re-distribute the weight of the asymetrical addition. That said, it's better than typical small building new construction. It's on a 20 ft wide lot, so they didn't have much space to work with. As long as the tree blocking the sidewalk view of the tumor never dies, the building will continue to blend in well with the rest of the block. By Frank at September 7, 2006 10:12 AM4. Now I understand the whole air right thing, never thought someone would go to this extreme for an extra 100 sq ft. September 12, 200618 yr I saw a piece on these sorts of things in Dwell (hangs head in shame) a few months ago. I assume this works on account of older buildings are so structurally overbuilt(?). Hey! One of you architect-people: save me on this one. Or cut me loose. Update: I actually read the post. New build. Never mind. I did see an article about these things as add-ons, though...
September 12, 200618 yr ^lol. The air directly above the house to the left is not part of their property though so how do they get away with it? It seems like that would be a valid reason for why we haven't seen much of this before. I honestly don't think it looks that bad but rememebering the scenario with that 5 story building that got knocked down (worth more money demolished because it could be replaced by a much taller building and sold for way more money) I would be pissed if I was the person living next door.
September 13, 200618 yr david i believe they would have to have bought the "air rights" from the owner of the building next door that its hanging over the top of. i dont know that for certain but i am pretty sure that is how it works.
