Posted September 12, 200618 yr What do you think this store? I know its not based in Ohio (headquartered in Grand Rapids, MI) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meijer http://www.meijer.com/ It seems they only have about 170 stores in 5 states in Midwest (half being in MI). They seem comparable in products and pricing to a Target or that other place. But it seems like it is more regional/local being that it is so small. (Btw, I am not a resident of OH at all. I live in the Gulf Coast region. I have been browsing around and thinking about moving up that way in a couple of years, Cincy is on my mind a lot.)
September 12, 200618 yr Meijer is Wal*Mart with a better grocer department and actual caring employees. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 12, 200618 yr I've been there once. Maybe it was just one of their older stores, but I wasn't impressed- it was trashy compared even to a Walmart. And the Discman that I bought there didn't work, and the headphones that came with it blew out within a week.
September 12, 200618 yr I think Wal-Mart is light years ahead of Meijer, and Meijer will eventually be a victim of Wal-Mart expansionism.
September 12, 200618 yr Meijer had supercenters long before Wal-marts, at least in SW Ohio. I find their products of much higher quality than Walmart/Kmart, while their prices are resonable. They continually reinvest in their facilities and appear to have a much better working envirment than Walmart and Kroger. If I had to have a big-box, Meijer or a Super Target would be my pick by a long shot.
September 12, 200618 yr Meijer is okay. I only go for groceries on occassion. For some reason, it takes me almost an hour to do my grocery shopping there, even if I arrive with an organized list. It must be the size and/or the way the store is organized. One thing that bugs me at the location near me is the self-serve check-outs. I hate those things. Unfortunately, they never seem to have a staffed express lane, so I'm usually stuck using the self-serve if I only have a few items. :( I tend to avoid Meijer if I only need a few items because of this.
September 12, 200618 yr As Michigoslings, we went to Meijer's Thrifty Acres all the time. Huge Michigan institution. You'll still hear Michigan folk call it Meijer's (but then, a lot of them say "Chrysler's" and "Ford's", too). Meijer began expanding into surrounding states in the early to mid 90s. I used to work for their advertising agency, and I remember coming to Toledo to record local talent for the grand opening radio spots. "Hi, I'm Mitchell Mays, Toledo's favorite ice cream truck driver. Meijer is opening a great new store here in Toledo..." There were plenty of "scoop" and "cool savings" lines in that script, I assure you. But I digress. ColDayMan is pretty on target, so to speak. Though I've always found Meijer's merchandise a bit on the shabby side, that is to say, they're no Target. From what I've seen, though, Wal*Mart out-shabbys Meijers by a cool country mile.
September 12, 200618 yr I'm not sure what Wal-Marts you've been visiting... Lewis Center, Canal Winchester, Stringtown, and Georgesville all blow Meijer away in terms of store quality. Wal-Mart consistently beats Meijer in pricing as well. The only thing Meijer does better is their ethnic food aisle.
September 12, 200618 yr The only thing Meijer does better is their ethnic food aisle. That's not a great bell weather. Guess I'm just predge-dist fer Meijer's.

I probably should go check out these Wal-Marts because I have never been to a Wal-Mart that I would consider superior in store quality to Meijer. I don't ever consider big box store shopping a pleasant experience, but for me Wal-Mart is about as bad as it gets (based on my last visits there a few years back). Also, Meijer seems to be upgrading their product line. Last time they were there they had Kenneth Cole Reaction products, which surprised me. They seem to get getting more Target-like home decor items as well.
September 12, 200618 yr Meijer was huge when I lived in South Bend, IN (Mishawaka, actually). This was almost 10 years ago though, and I had never even heard of Walmart at the time, Meijer was IT in that area. I don't know if I can compare accurately, but I thought it was a lot nicer than the (admittedly few) WalMarts I've been in since, but maybe they have gotten crappier these days.

That was my experience too, here in Dayton. My grocery shopping is usually at Miejer and Cub, amd Meijer for sundrys. I wasn't too impressed with Wal-Mart. I'd say Miejer is sort of between Wal-Mart and Target in range. Meijer has moved into the Louisville market, too, and seems to be popular there. They are also in suburban Chicago. Interestingly, the Dayton Meijers are all unionized, which is sort of unusual for big box retail (though Cub is union too, here).
September 13, 200618 yr Meijer is a good place if you're like me (hate shopping, trying to get everything done at the same place and plan on going in and getting the hell out). Target is better for non-grocery items, and Kroger is the best overall for groceries (If you go to a non-ghetto Kroger). What stands out about Meijer is their great selection of international foods. Are you doing market research for Meijer? Strange for a first post..
September 13, 200618 yr Meijer is Wal*Mart with a better grocer department and actual caring employees. They must be well paid. The level of caring is usually in direct proportion to level of pay :-D

Are you doing market research for Meijer? Strange for a first post.. No, just interested in what others think of this place. We don't have any down here on the Gulf Coast. I had heard of this place from a friend whose uncle lives in Indianapolis (they have them there as well). Anyway, I was thinking of moving to Cincinnati in a year or so and I found out they had Meijer there so I was interested.
September 13, 200618 yr The Meijer in Oakley (Cincinnati) is great...it's right next to Target. It was just built and it's massive. You won't be disappointed.
September 13, 200618 yr Call me silly but the last thing I worry/think about when I'm looking to go someplace relatively distant long term is what kind of big box shopping there might be when I get there. That kind of misses the point of this entire forum/website. I agree on the peculiar angle for a first post. I figure either an odd placed internet marketing tactic to create buzz or a hardcore "foodie".
September 13, 200618 yr I consider Meijer to be a cross between a Super Walmart and Target. Their home furnishings and decor is not as good as Target, but their grocery is much better than Super Walmart.

I was just wondering what exactly kind of store was Meijer. No, that is not factoring into my moving there.

As an ex-pat Ohioan living near the Gulf Coast, I wouldn't mind a Meijers, or even a Kroger. I've stated several times, in various threads on this board, over the 2 years I've lived in BR, that the markets here are so bad, that I consider going to WalMart as an upgrade over their competitors.
