I think the land bridge is the key to harbor life. Right now there are some significant attractions and yet the harbor is also mostly lacking in the things that make it a place you want to hang out in. You can walk around for a bit but there's not much to interact with. If you've been to other harbor areas around the country there is usually a palpable sense of life.

For this I put a lot of blame on bad planning and inappropriate architecture for the special location. The Rock Hall and the Science Center absolutely need to be better connected (for people not cars) and to have more outdoor attractions. It's really frustrating, but it's fixable.

Thanks for the pics. I wish people would stop incessantly complaining about this bridge. It’s not nearly as bad as has been made out in this thread and it is a nice amenity.  It’s great that it has th

IMO the bridge was not needed and was a waste of money.

I like you Cod idea. It would compliment the Cliff  container ship museum really well.  The Cod doesn't get many visitors. Last time I went I had the entire submarine to my self and was transported back into time. It was an awesome experience!

I think they don't want to mo e the COD because they have total site control where it is. I don't really agree with them.

I've felt for a long time that the waterfront between w3 and e9 should be the fanily-friendly university circle. build an aquarium, move the children's museum, get an old warship or sail boat as a permanent exhibit like the mather,, an interactive art museum, a multiscreen imax theater

I don't think it needs to be a restaurant/club/apartment district.

I think the lone sailor is a great pick, you may not know it but Cleveland has a huge historic military backround. I'm suprised we dont have a naval station nearby...

9th District of the Coast Guard is headquartered in Cleveland. This district covers all of the great lakes.

But given that the only access to the Great Lakes is the St Lawrence Seaway and the boarder is with Canada, I can't think of much need for a Naval station.

Today CP approved the installation of a new monument at voinovich park.

Personally this is the one area I would have liked to see a green space stay a green space, would have preferred something like this to eat into the parking lot over there but oh well

I would have preferred the Superman Statue proposed years back at the end of the pedestrian bridge across the train tracks near the science center. Something that is uniquely linked to Cleveland on a historical/ cultural level that displays its heritage to out of town visitors would be the way to go.

I'm sure LeBron will one day have  a statue prominently displayed in downtown along side Jessi Owens and Jim Brown currently displayed. Something to be proud of that's uniquely our own.

I get that Ohio leadership, and much of its voters, doesn't care for women, but the Jim Brown statue should have been destroyed long ago.

I respect your sentiment.  Part of what makes America great is the respect, protect and equality we have for women (current Roe v Wade ruling aside).  Having said that, I think we can do a better job at recognizing people's achievements / contributions to society while at the same time recognizing that they were just as flawed and imperfect as we are.  I do not know all the specific allegations against J. Brown but it just seems to me that if we were to take down any statutes of people that were flawed, made mistakes, have a checkered past that we would basically have no monuments.  Again, I don't know all of the accusations against J. Brown but it seems to me that, if the people calling for the removal of his or other statutes were honest with themselves, they would see that we are all imperfect and that we shouldn't judge those that came before us for essentially being like us.

Well we already renamed Thomas Jefferson High School, the trend appears to be renaming everything if someone had a checkered past in 21st century standards

All of this renaming seems rather silly. The Stokes brorhers weren't exactly model citizens.  Do we need to remove their names from the various buildings and roads? But let's get back on topic.

i always pictured a colossus of rhodes sized lebron straddling over the turnpike -- or at least next to it like the giant gundam in japan.

as for superman, i always imagined video ad display billboards around downtown where he could zip around between one to the other.

a little more written detail.  Event was yesterday … not sure if anyone went ?

There's no bigger supporter of our veterans than me, but I'm disappointed over this placement.

  1. Is this being installed because we don't have enough war memorials in every corner of the nation/NE Ohio, and in all of our most prominent places?
  2. Is this being installed because there's always more money for war stuff, but never enough money for beautiful gardens fresh public art, or sporting/leisure/interactive/playground equipment in our public parks.

It might have made more sense to locate it near the USS Cod. As for your second question, I assume there is less maintenance involved for a monument vs. any of the other items you mentioned.

And speaking of gardens, it would be nice to see the Donald Gray Gardens restored somewhere in the vicinity.

I remember seeing the presentation for these not long ago. They actually put these in quick. I guess they are kind of cool and different? Just extremely random fountain placements.

I believe they were done by an artist as part of FRONT triennial. I swear I just read a post on them on FRONTs instagram

For Oh, Gods of Dust and Rainbows, London-based collective Cooking Sections has initiated a long-term project that looks at Ohio’s environmental futures through the current metabolic condition of Lake Erie and its surroundings. This takes the form of a site-specific installation in Lake Erie in conjunction with a multi-year social initiative. The overall project highlights some of the small-scale local farmers’ commitment to regenerate the soil, eliminate the use of chemical fertilizer, and, through this, improve the quality of the Lake Erie watershed.

The installation consists of a fountain on the lake that celebrates the efforts of an initial cohort of Ohio farmers that are removing chemical fertilizer from their farming methods. Oftentimes those who are named and commemorated in the public sphere have made their wealth through extractive practices. In contrast, this project highlights figures and practices contributing to the local ecosystem’s health.

Now make the fountain a couple hundred feet taller 😂 Go big or go home. I lived in Saudi Arabia for six years over 20 years ago, and I'd visit this city Jeddah which had something like this in the Red Sea. Always though something similar would look pretty cool and original in Cleveland.

That Jeddah fountain looks really cool, but maybe Cleveland can up it one more. Can we move the Tower City dancing fountain to Lake Erie, but increase the scale of each arch to 75-100' high? Think about the visual impact of that on the lake front.

^the FAA and the pilots taking off at Burke would love it!

hmm, cool and it's an fairly easy/great idea, but maybe not for downtown. wendy park? or maybe the upcoming park along the shoreway east of the airport? or by the river in the flats?? it would be quite a draw, but messy directly downtown with the wind and the weather.

I haven't been to NCH lately. Just wondering if the new bridge is getting much usage. And how about the playground behind the science center?

^IME that’s a strong yes and regular yes, respectively.

The City presented the Voinovich Park furnishings at todays CPC, receiving final approval.  The ground cover in the existing planters will be replaced. Bocce Courts next to Nuevo (and some Bradford pears) along the southerner portion of the park will be replaced with new plantings/seating and a small play area. The southwest corner of the lawn will have a new covered seating area. Various new furnishings/seating options will be placed around the parks perimeter.

I love the idea of VP being an open space venue, the only problem isnt just the lack of park seating, it's an outcrop with very few options to eat within that area unless you picnic, how I wish people did that more. However it's a great open air spot that can attract busker talent and even hold small concerts right there. I'm not sure what kind of event coordination they have in that area specifically but it would be a way more popular spot with food truck appearances. Love this spot, and I'm glad they're improving on it.

Close the parking area to food trucks on weekends.

Fantastic. Now stop the a-hole bikers congregating there every night from May to November.

Cross post from Lakefront...

If they're talking about bringing the USS Cleveland back to it's namesake, what is the best possible solution for incorporating another large vessel in the area? We already have the Mather and the Cod, how do we move things around or include everything in such a manner that doesn't disrupt marina traffic or the Coast Guard. I've also never been to Tall Ships, I've always wanted to, but what kind of displacement are we talking about for nautical vessel events from years past?
