November 6, 20213 yr https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2021/11/04/polaris-owner-emerges-chapter-11/6272563001/ Polaris mall owner emerges from bankruptcy with new leadership Washington Prime Group, the Columbus-based owner of Polaris Fashion Place and dozens of other shopping centers, has emerged from bankruptcy with new leadership. ... Washington Prime filed for bankruptcy protection in June, after struggling for more than a year with a pandemic that crushed mall revenue and traffic. In its bankruptcy filing in Texas, Washington Prime listed assets of $4.03 billion and debts of $3.47 billion. ... Following the court's approval of the bankruptcy plan in September, Washington Prime announced that it would no longer be a publicly traded company. ... Washington Prime owns and operates about 100 U.S. shopping centers including nine in Ohio: Polaris Fashion Place; Indian Mound Mall in Heath; the Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek; Dayton Mall; New Towne Mall in New Philadelphia; Lima Mall and Lima Center; Great Lakes Mall in Mentor; and Southern Park Mall in Youngstown. ================================================================ If the new private equity owners can make it work, more power to them. That said, my view on the pandemic wave of retail bankruptcies is that it was only a moment of acceleration of a long-term trend. Our population isn't growing fast enough to grow into the sheer volume of retail buildout in this country.

November 13, 20222 yr When a business works mostly on referrals rather than being foot-traffic-dependent like stores are they can be in locations with lower foot traffic and still thrive. Since Columbus has few nodes besides the Statehouse and the Short North, foot traffic doesn't concentrate enough to have businesses that really depend on stroll-in traffic not generated by their website/social media. Cities with rail transit for example have a lot more nodes based around train stations where maybe hundreds of people get off a train at once as opposed to bus stops where most of the time only like 5 people get off -- except at the Statehouse.
