Sears Holdings Corp. plans to shut down its nine remaining Great Indoors big-box appliance and home remodeling stores nationwide, including its store at Polaris Fashion Place mall.

A different type of supermarket is going into the city's evolving "international district" in the Morse Road/SR 161/Northland area.  Below is a link to a ThisWeekNews article about Saraga International Grocery opening at 1265 Morse Road in what was once a Toys R Us store.  The 40,000 sq. ft. supermarket will import food and produce from five different continents.  The new store at Morse Road will be the third Saraga International Grocery in the U.S., and the first in Ohio.

^ Really good news--most certainly an innovative store worth keeping an eye on for many reasons!  Hopefully the owner can overcome any problems that might arise with the store's completion, and its success be closely studied not only by the food industry in Columbus, but by food retailers throughout Ohio.

Ricart adding retail center at its Columbus mega-mall

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter

Business First - Jan 11, 2013, 6:00am EST

The Ricart auto mega-mall is getting a mini-mall.  Ricart Automotive Group is building a 3,400-square-foot retail center at its 70-acre complex off Hamilton Road in Columbus aimed at servicing car shoppers and its workers.

A Subway franchise, workout facility for Ricart employees and Enterprise Rent-A-Car store will move into the strip center.  There is a fourth element – a photo studio.  Construction is expected to be completed by March and the photo facility done in the summer.

The dealership occasionally shuttles customers to the nearby Eastland Mall where they can grab something to eat, but surveys suggested putting a dining outlet at the sprawling car-selling complex.  Ricart estimates 500 people – workers and consumers – are at the auto mall daily, providing a big captive audience for the sandwich chain.

Easton bringing True Religion to Ohio

DAI-True-Religion-Jeans*280.jpg?v=1

Two more luxury merchants have picked Easton Town Center to host their first shops in Ohio. True Religion Brand Jeans and Tumi are expected to open in the Columbus lifestyle retail center this year.

Construction is under way on the True Religion store, which is taking 1,500 square feet in the north part of the district near a remodeled and expanded store for Express Inc. (NYSE:EXPR). It is scheduled to open in early summer. Vernon, Calif.-based True Religion Apparel Inc. (NASDAQ:TRLG) runs 125 stores worldwide selling its namesake jeans and knit, woven and denim-related sportswear.

...

Last year was a busy year for the 13-year-old Easton Town Center as luxury brands Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors set up standalone Ohio shops. Other confirmed openings in 2013 include Kate Spade, and American Girl.

Car salesmen can starve nearly to death at work. Selling a car can take hours and hours where eventually the salesman's stomach can begin to digest itself. Having the Subway around will probably help.

Piada, Jeni’s singled out as ‘breakout brands’ in nationwide ranking

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter

Business First - Jan 29, 2013, 11:59am EST

Five restaurants with Columbus connections are expected to be among the breakout brands in the industry in 2013, including hometown creations Piada Italian Street Food and Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams.  Trade publication Nation’s Restaurant News singled out the two Columbus-based chains, as well as a Cleveland restaurant with plans in Central Ohio and two non-Ohio chains that recently opened at Easton Town Center, in its annual scouring of the restaurant world for the 50 next big things.

Piada, which the magazine noted already has been called “one to watch” by numerous publications and experts, earned praise for its innovative products and for the restaurant chops of founder Chris Doody.  Jeni’s also garnered accolades for innovation, its prowess at selling premium products and its use of local and sustainable ingredients.

Jeni’s ice cream, Middle West liquor, Rockmill beer getting New York showcase

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter

Business First - Feb 4, 2013, 12:19pm EST

Twenty food writers are getting together for dinner in New York City Monday night, but the table talk will be all about Columbus.  Experience Columbus is pitching the virtues of Central Ohio’s food scene to the exclusive group, who otherwise might not think of Columbus as a destination, with the help of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, Middle West Spirits LLC and Rockmill Brewery.

The attendees include writers from Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, New York, The New York Times, Every Day with Rachael Ray, Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health. “We wanted to get in front of New York writers who maybe don’t – or won’t – travel to Columbus,” Experience Columbus spokesman Scott Peacock said.

Chef Jonathon Sawyer, owner of the Greenhouse Tavern in Cleveland, connected the group to Saxon & Parole restaurant, which is hosting and providing the main dishes for the five-course meal, which will begin after the writers warm up with a Middle West cocktail.  Four courses will be paired with Rockmill’s Belgian-style beers, and the fifth will be desserts provided by Jeni’s that use Middle West and Rockmill products.  Then a nightcap also will be provided by Middle West.

The founders of the companies – Jeni’s Jeni Britton Bauer, Brady Konya and Ryan Lang of Middle West, and Rockmill’s Matthew Barbee – will be on hand to share their methods and personal stories.

Brezel Expands at North Market, Adds Frozen Retail Lineup of Products

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on February 6, 2013 - 8:00 am

Brezel is celebrating two years in business at The North Market by growing and expanding both in terms of physical space and business model.  The hand-rolled Bavarian-style pretzel shop recently scooted one spot over, taking the slightly larger stall vacated by Clever Crow in December.

“With the additional space, more of our team members are able to work at the same time, and this allows us to increase our capacities and take on bigger clients that we may not have been able to accommodate previously,” said Brittany Baum, owner of Brezel. “We’re also now open seven days per week.”

Baum says that better visibility was also a key factor in their relocation.  A large new sign and menu board has been installed, featuring a revamped Brezel logo created by local designer Jeremy Slagle.  “Our new space is located on a corner of the North Market, so now a customer can see our shop from the other end of the building,” said Baum.  “The additional windows have also provided us with more opportunities to market to potential customers outside of the market, and lots of natural light is a bonus.”

Easton lands ‘boho-chic’ chain Free People

Another new store is getting unwrapped at Easton Town Center just before the holidays. Women’s apparel and accessories retailer Free People is scheduled to open Nov. 22.

The 3,300-square-foot store is the 87th in the chain. It also is the last retailer to open in the Easton Town Center’s Fenlon Square addition, which is predominately geared toward kids with its American Girl and Build-A-Bear Workshop stores among other retail and dining attractions.

It’s the second Free People in Ohio and the first in Central Ohio for the chain.

Tesla Opens Columbus Store at Easton

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on December 6, 2013 - 8:00 am

Starting today, Easton shoppers will be able to pick up a Tesla Model S in between dinner at Ocean Club and a movie at AMC.  The Palo Alto based electric car manufacturer is officially opening their new showroom space at the mall in the area that formerly housed the Puma store (and before that was home to the third largest McDonalds in the nation) — a spot that is hotly desired for showing off these unique vehicles.

(. . .)

In addition to Easton, Tesla is also entering the Ohio market this month at the Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati.  The location at Easton may seem small for an automobile dealership at a mere 2,632 square feet, but with the Model S being the only vehicle the company is producing (the Model X crossover SUV goes into production in late 2014) the size should be adequate for now.

REI adding store at Sawmill to go with Easton

rei-storefront*304.jpg

REI is planning a second store for Columbus before its first in the city even opens.

The Seattle-based outdoor retailer said Monday that it will open a store next fall in the Sun Center at Dublin-Granville and Sawmill roads near Dublin. The company earlier disclosed plans to put its first Central Ohio shop at the new Easton Gateway. The retailer arrived in Ohio last year with a Cincinnati store.

“Columbus is a city filled with active people and one of the largest markets without an REI store,” Ray Dinterman, REI regional director, said in a release.

The story alludes to Columbus being one of the largest markets without an REI...  The two largest metro markets remaining without an REI open or announced are Miami (#11) and Cleveland/Akron/Canton (#16).. Columbus is #30 in metro population - so two stores is unusual.

It's still a large market and it's correct it was one of the largest without an REI if only Miami and Cleveland were ahead of it.

Another retail niche found in the Short North - boardgames.  Or rather a bar/gathering spot to play boardgames.  Kingmakers Board Game Parlour opened this month in the basement of 17 Buttles Avenue.  Columbus Underground states that it "offers a haven for gamers to gather for beer, brezels and a couple of rounds with any of the 200+ games from the collection off the shelves."

Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets Expanding to Columbus

By: Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Published on February 18, 2014 - 2:35 pm

It sounds like Lucky’s Market will be getting some new competition, both locally and regionally.  Arizona-based Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets has announced plans to open over 60 stores across the Midwest in the next five years, including a Northwest Columbus location at 6700 Sawmill Road, just inside 270.

“Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets will be a completely new grocery format for the Midwest,” said Chris Sherrell, President and CEO of Fresh Thyme. “We’ve taken the experience of an outdoor farmers market and combined it with the convenience of a full-service grocery store. Shoppers will enjoy value priced natural and organic items throughout our store, making healthy food more attainable to the masses.”

The insta-chain’s first location will open in Mt. Prospect, Illinois (a Chicago suburb) this spring with eight more stores slated to open throughout 2014.  The Columbus location is planned to open in the Summer of 2015.

Studio 35 and Gateway teaming up in fight against multiplexes

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter

Columbus Business First - Feb. 25, 2014, 11:20am EST

A pair of locally owned Columbus movie theaters – Gateway Film Center and Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse – are teaming up in a partnership meant to strengthen both in the face of the bigger out-of-town multiplexes that dot the Columbus movie landscape. ... The theaters plan to advertise each other’s venues and to team up on events.

(. . .)

Both theaters have undergone changes in the past few years.  Studio 35, at 3055 Indianola Avenue in Clintonville, went through an extensive remodeling in 2012.  Gateway at 1550 N. High Street near the Ohio State University campus, converted its cafe into the Liz Lessner-owned Torpedo Room.  These changes come as new operators like Dallas-based Studio Movie Grill have entered the market in the Arena District and megaplexes like AMC Theatres have added bars and in-theater food service to several area operations.

The Planters Peanut Shop at 46 N. High Street is closing today to relocate two blocks south into the ground floor of the Fifth Third tower at State & High.  They will also be taking the iconic "Mr. Peanut" sign to their new location:

Peanut Shoppe Relocating to Fifth Third Center

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

March 11, 2014 - 9:25 am

The Peanut Shoppe has been a Downtown staple for 78 years, and owners Mike and Pat Stone are looking for a new lease on life with a relocation two blocks south into the Fifth Third Center at the corner of State and High Streets.  The move is not the first for the shop, which was originally located at 5 South High Street from 1936 to 1978 when it was owned by Planters.

(. . .)

“Our new address will draw customers from Huntington Bank, the Riffe Center and the old Lazarus building. The newest potential for us will be the folks who actually live in the neighborhood. Proximity to the Annex and High Point residents will open us up to a new evening and Saturday clientele.”  Plans are to keep later hours during special events at the Ohio Theatre, Riffe Center and Columbus Commons.

Customers can expect to find a very similar lineup of candy and nuts at the new store, with seasonal items including peanut brittle, toffee peanuts and more.  “We will close retail sales at 46 N High Street on March 24th,” says Pat Stone.  “When it comes to reopening, we are at the mercy of those who grant permits and approve inspections. We hope to be open in late April or early May.”

REI planning big grand opening at Easton this weekend

One of the most-renowned names in outdoor retailing is open at Easton Gateway.  Seattle-based Recreation Equipment Inc., commonly known as REI, has been in soft opening mode since May 10, but will celebrate its grand opening Friday.

(. . .)

Easton is the first, but not last REI store opening in Columbus.  A Sawmill site is scheduled to open later this year.  “That’s a big move for us, to open two stores,” manager Eric Piper said. “Usually we just dip our toe in but the success in Cincinnati (which opened in 2012), makes us confident about Columbus.”
