^ Interesting.  According to an article about a second Fresh Thyme location being planned in Worthington, this Columbus location on Sawmill Road was formerly a Borders bookstore.

According to Perani's Hockey World, strong youth hockey interest in the Columbus northern suburbs attracted the retailer to the Polaris area.  This would be the 23th Perani’s Hockey World to open in the U.S. and Canada:  http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2014/06/19/perani-s-hockey-world-skating-into-columbus-with.html

Fresh Tyme is open now. I liked it, but I found it very similar to Lucky's Market. I am within walking distance of Lucky's so I don't see much reason to go to Sawmill for groceries. I also found it funny one of their Grand Opening deals was raspberries for 77-cents, which is exactly what they were priced at for Lucky's grand opening.

Good to see different grocers opening up aside from the typical Giant Eagle/Kroger/Whole Foods folks.

The Planters Peanut Shop at 46 N. High Street is closing today to relocate two blocks south into the ground floor of the Fifth Third tower at State & High.  They will also be taking the iconic "Mr. Peanut" sign to their new location:

Peanut Shoppe Relocating to Fifth Third Center

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

March 11, 2014 - 9:25 am

The Peanut Shoppe has been a Downtown staple for 78 years, and owners Mike and Pat Stone are looking for a new lease on life with a relocation two blocks south into the Fifth Third Center at the corner of State and High Streets.  The move is not the first for the shop, which was originally located at 5 South High Street from 1936 to 1978 when it was owned by Planters.

(. . .)

“Our new address will draw customers from Huntington Bank, the Riffe Center and the old Lazarus building. The newest potential for us will be the folks who actually live in the neighborhood. Proximity to the Annex and High Point residents will open us up to a new evening and Saturday clientele.”  Plans are to keep later hours during special events at the Ohio Theatre, Riffe Center and Columbus Commons.

Customers can expect to find a very similar lineup of candy and nuts at the new store, with seasonal items including peanut brittle, toffee peanuts and more.  “We will close retail sales at 46 N High Street on March 24th,” says Pat Stone.  “When it comes to reopening, we are at the mercy of those who grant permits and approve inspections. We hope to be open in late April or early May.”

It took the folks at the Peanut Shoppe longer then they estimated to reopen at their new 21 E. State Street location.  But their facebook page says they are ready for a full reopening on Monday morning.  Complete with the relocated Mr. Peanut sign at the corner of State & High.  From the Peanut Shoppe's facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Peanut-Shoppe-Columbus/132792170080584?fref=nf

It's been noted that quite a few Cleveland and Cincinnati businesses (particularly restaurants) have been expanding into the Columbus area lately.  To return the favor, two locally-founded Columbus businesses are expanding into the other 2-C's.

I posted this downtown bike lane news over in the Columbus: Bicycling Developments and News thread:

There were some hopes from this report at http://www.columbusunderground.com/bike-lanes-coming-to-fourth-and-summit-third-streets-bw1 that Third and Fourth Streets in downtown might get some physically separated bike lanes when the streets are resurfaced in 2015.

Well, this update from CU at http://www.columbusunderground.com/protected-lanes-not-part-of-new-plan-for-bike-lanes-downtown-bw1 is less rosy.  Third and Fourth will be getting bike lanes (along with Long and Spring Streets).  But they'll be a combination of painted bike lanes, signs and sharrows instead of physically separated lanes.

One of the downsides to dedicated bike lanes in an urban retail context is sometimes having to choose between bike lanes and on-street parking.  This issue is being felt on Long Street between 3rd and 4th streets in Downtown, as CU reports:

Anthropologie is now open in the Short North.  8-)

The Short North Anthropologie store occupies nearly 9,800 square feet on the first and second floors of the 55,000-square-foot Joseph office building, making it significantly larger than the average Anthropologie store, which is typically about 7,200 square feet. That will allow the Short North store to feature a broader selection of merchandise for which the retailer is best known.

The 193-store chain has four other Ohio locations: one at Easton Town Center, one in Cincinnati and two in Cleveland.

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2014/10/10/anthropologie-opens-in-short-north.html

Some openings and closings for three centrally located Stauf's / Cup O Joe coffee shops:

- Cup O Joe's Short North MoJoe Lounge closed over the weekend.  The MoJoe Lounge was one of the first tenants to move into the (then newly completed) I-670 Cap which connects Downtown to the Short North.  Their original 10-year lease is expiring and they choose not to renew:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/cup-o-joe-closing-short-north-mojoe-lounge-location

- Partly because a new Stauf's opened last month in the North Market, located a block west of their former Cap location:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/staufs-coffee-roasters-opening-at-north-market-this-weekend

- And a renovated Stauf's opened last month in German Village:  http://www.columbusunderground.com/staufs-now-open-in-german-village

It's true. You'd better have weird stuff in core Columbus because it can be really difficult to sell "normal" things.

A couple of trendy retail ventures coming to the Old North Columbus area.  The first is Old North Arcade, a similar barcade concept to downtown's 16-Bit and the campus area's Ethyl & Tank:

Old North Arcade Planned in Old North Columbus

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

November 5, 2014 - 11:52 am

Nothing goes together like beer and video games.  That’s what the team behind Old North Arcade is banking on, as they have formally applied last month for zoning and parking variance changes to open their new bar and arcade business at 2591 N. High Street, in the former Sunflower Natural Foods space.

The 2,400 square foot building would host free-to-play arcade games in the front half of the building with a full service bar in the back.  No on-site kitchen is planned.  A parking variance is required, as the business only has three parking spaces in back, though the owners have secured a parking arrangement with the nearby Crosby Drugs and Ace Hardware stores for after-hours parking lot usage.

The second trendy retail venture for Old North Columbus is a speciality grocery/bakery/restaurant concept similar to The Market in Italian Village and The Hills Market Downtown:

Speciality Grocery/Bakery/Restaurant Coming Soon to Old North Columbus

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

November 5, 2014 - 1:19 pm

When we last checked in with Dan Kraus of That Food Truck, he had his sights set on opening something new called “The Butcher’s Baker” in Italian Village.  The bad news, is that it’s no longer happening. ... There’s some good news to be had though, as the concept has been restructured a bit and given a new name (Baba’s) and a new location (2515 Summit Street).

(. . .)

Kraus describes the concept going into the 1,400 square foot space as a speciality grocery store, but says that it will provide a little bit of everything for everyone.  Baker Matt Swint from Matija Breads will be installing commercial ovens for production, pastry chef Jackson Roecker will be serving up breakfast items along side coffee from local roaster Thunderkiss, and Kraus himself will be curing charcuterie cuts from Ohio-grown meats.

Ikea plans to open Polaris store in 2017

Ikea is expected to announce Tuesday that it is coming to Columbus, with a store expected to open in 2017.

After years of rumors that it would come to the area, the Swedish furniture plans to open its second store in Ohio on the site of the former Germain Amphitheater, on Polaris Parkway just east of I-71, two Columbus city officials and a local developer confirmed to The Dispatch.

Ikea plans to open Polaris store in 2017

And for the first time I ever I may have a reason to shop in Polaris.

Ikea is a cult.

Columbus will be getting an IKEA store in 2017.  And local retail Analyst Chris Boring of Boulevard Strategies says that it is prime time for the Swedish company to expand into the Central Ohio market.

Retail Analyst Says Columbus is Ready for IKEA

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

January 27, 2015 - 6:00 am

“With just under two million residents, Columbus is the nation’s 32nd largest MSA, and IKEA already has 38 stores in the United States,” says Boring.  “Also, IKEA targets Millennials in their twenties and thirties and younger Gen-Xers in their early forties. These age cohorts comprise 29.5% of Central Ohio’s population compared to 27% of the overall U.S. population, so this is a great IKEA market.”

IKEA is generally known as a regional destination, drawing customers who will drive from two to three hours away for a dedicated shopping trip.  With existing stores in the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Detroit markets, and possible plans to add another in Cleveland, concerns of oversaturation have arisen.

Boring doesn’t foresee this as being an issue.  “Each of those are completely different markets, with its own local media, pro sports teams, and cultural identity and history — and each has enough households to support an IKEA,” he says.

I was just driving down Hillhurst in the Los Feliz neighborhood of LA and saw a new Jeni's Ice Cream store! I had to turn around and walk in. The girl working said they had just opened on Friday. I didn't know Jeni's was expanding nationwide. Tough competition in the LA market with Portland's Salt and Straw just entering LA last year. And better ice cream than Jeni's, in my opinion.

Some comments on the Jeni's recall from Business First: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/morning_call/2015/05/morning-roundup-jenis-vs-blue-bell-recalls-steiner.html

"A tale of two recalls: The massive recall by Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams after they found listeria in a product sample came soon after fellow ice-cream maker Blue Bell Creameries went through a similar recall.  But there are differences in the two companies' approaches, as detailed in Food Safety News."

"The trade publication notes Texas-based Blue Bell initially tried recalling specific batches in an effort that stretched out over a month as more contamination kept turning up, before the company finally gave in and recalled everything.  That total recall came just two weeks before Jeni's disclosed its own listeria problem, recalling all products from the start.  How will that play out with consumers?  The publication notes they both have cult-like followings likely to stick with the brands, but crisis management expert Jonathan Bernstein said Jeni's scored well for a "technically perfect" recall."

Central Ohio distilleries facing retail shutdown as they grow

By Dan Eaton, Columbus Business First

Updated: May 7, 2015, 1:27pm EDT

Watershed Distillery and Middle West Spirits are getting too big for their own good.  The popular Central Ohio microdistilleries both will surpass 10,000 proof gallons in annual production this year.  That’s the threshold between micro and macro in Ohio’s eyes and once it's crossed, the distillers will no longer be allowed to operate on-site stores or give out samples.  “There will probably be a point this year where we won’t be able to sell from our distillery,” Watershed co-owner Greg Lehman told me.

He said 'probably' because legislation to erase that 10,000 proof gallon line is going to be proposed, but the if and when of that equation remain unknown.  Will it be supported by legislators and will it go through in time to spare Watershed and Middle West, makers of the Oyo brand, from any retail shutdown?  Both distilleries said their on-site shops account for as much as 10 percent of annual sales.

Anheuser-Busch plant in line for $18 million in upgrades

By Dan Eaton, Columbus Business First

Updated: June 23, 2015, 1:17pm EDT

Anheuser-Busch is spending $1.5 billion on improvements at its U.S. operations, including at least $18 million here in Columbus. ... The Columbus brewery on the city’s northeast side is slated for an $18 million slice of that pie, with the key piece being a $4 million heat-recovery project that would take heat generated inside the brewery and redirect that into brewing operations.  A spokesman said the company expects to see a 14 percent reduction in fuel use once the project is completed.

The brewery did not say what the remainder of the Columbus investment would go toward, though it did say $50 million has been invested there since 2011 for new capabilities, improved efficiency and general maintenance.

And they don't Beechwood Age Budweiser anymore either.

(Cross-posted in the Canal Winchester Development thread in the Central Ohio Projects & Construction section)

It's now confirmed that the "Columbus" location for Scotland's BrewDog brewery will actually be in Canal Winchester.  Okay then, let's call it the Central Ohio location for BrewDog:

Actually, from BrewDog's perspective, this rural location does make sense:

- It's 42 acres; (The former Timken property in Columbus that Stone Brewing considered was only 30 acres.)

- BrewDog said they plan to produce 85,000 barrels in the first year of operation and then grow to 850,000 barrels annually within three years.  By comparison, Great Lakes produces 150,000 to 180,000 barrels a year. (Stone Brewing said they would top out at 500,000 barrels annually.)

- The Canal Winchester site on Gender Road is located next to a rail line that goes to the Rickenbacker Airport multi-modal cargo center, located approx. 4 miles west. (Which is a much closer and more direct route that the Timken property - plus the Columbus Timken property is also being redeveloped by another manufacturer after the Stone deal didn't happen.)

The success of 16-Bit Bar+Arcade got the current barcade trend going in C-Bus.  However, instead of expanding from their one location in downtown, 16-Bit decided to let others expand in Columbus, while they expand their brand to Cleveland and Cincinnati - more about this at http://16-bitbar.com/.
