Tigertree is a clothing, accessories and gift store that has been operating in the Short North for nine years.  Now, the husband-and-wife team that operates Tigertree - and recently had a baby - is opening a kids version of Tigertree.  The new store has been given a kids version of the Tigertree name - cubshrub - and will be located at 749 N. High Street, a half block south of their existing 787 N. High Street store.  The 749 N. High Street location currently houses the Mac Worthington art gallery - which is moving to a new location at the recently renovated historic Atlas Building in downtown:

Pursuit Relocating to The Short North

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Posted: June 5, 2015

Local suit retailer Pursuit first popped up in the South Campus Gateway back in 2011, and four years later they’re ready to expand into a new space.  This summer, the store will relocate to 937 N. High Street in the Short North, in a prominent spot located between Northstar Cafe and Paradise Garage.

Pursuit’s owner Nate DeMars originally launched the business to cater to new college graduates in need of an affordable-yet-stylish suit for their first job interviews, but he says that the business model has grown and evolved. ... “The audience has matured and developed and we’ve learned that a decent chunk of our business was young professionals with same needs,” he explained.  “And over time that’s only grown because some of our first college customers from four years ago are now young professionals as return customers.”

DeMars says that evolution is what prompted the move to the Short North, which has stronger foot traffic for the retail side of his business.

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

After 18 months of running a pop-up shop at 1435 Grandview Avenue, State of Devotion is making the leap into a full time brick and mortar store, just a few doors down at 1399 Grandview Avenue.  The popular local shirt designer and retailer is planning to launch the new location on Saturday, August 29th to coincide with the monthly Grandview Hop event.

Finally, some good news from Jeni's.  Their Michigan Avenue production kitchen is reopening today after a nearly three-month shutdown.  Plus, the 40 employees that were offered temporary jobs in scoop shops or severance packages during this shutdown are being offered their jobs back.

With the reopening of the kitchen, Jeni’s has a new model for making ice cream.  Jeni’s will still handle the research, development and sourcing of all ingredients.  However, in a change, all fresh ingredients from local farms will be processed in a kitchen separate from the production kitchen and will be brought in only after it has been cleaned.  The ingredients will then be transported to Smith Dairy - which has been sourcing cream and grass-grazed milk for Jeni’s for the past year and a half - and mixed into ice cream there (according to the articles linked below):

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

^ I get that "meh" is your thing.  And that's fine (even if you didn't own this site).  But as an active UO participant from Columbus, the Jeni's story is definitely not meh.

And this is not because I personally crave their ice cream.  I'm not one to spend heavily for luxury items, ice cream or otherwise.  I'm not their target demographic - but many others are.  So much so that Jeni's has become a local success story.  Starting in a small North Market shop, moving into larger stores throughout Central Ohio, and just beginning to expand to the rest of Ohio - all while retaining the status of a "cool company".  Add to that the charming personality of the "Jeni" behind Jeni's, and its no wonder the company developed a devoted following.

Jeni's was just a fascinating story.  You wanted to see how far they could rise.  And then the listeria-scare hit hard, was seemingly corrected, only to rise again.  Now the company is in survival mode instead of expansion mode.  They've adapted their business model and are hopefully moving forward to a better future.  I, for one, want to see if they can regain their cool company status.  Despite all their problems this year, they still seem to have maintained most of that devoted following.  At the very least, the future of Jeni's is a compelling storyline that deserves to be followed.

The "Meh" was more so "I'm over the overpriced ice cream."  And this is coming from a once-Jeni's fanatic who went to her shop in Grandview at least once a week.  I don't see the price justification for using...well...Smith Dairy.  I'm still happy she's making positive national headlines and it certainly helps Columbus in the foodie world...but, yeah, I'm just over it.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

The "Meh" (aka "I'm over the overpriced ice cream") makes sense.  Just clarifying, that's all.  No problem.

good for Jeni's. Now, charge less.

Good ol' urbanity-killing Amazon. While initially Amazon might help urban pioneers obtain things that they'd ordinarily have to drive to the 'burbs to get, as infill progresses, urbanites' Amazon habits prevent retailers from opening. That's one reason a lot of newly refreshed urban areas see their retail spaces fill with bars, restaurants, hair salons, heavily-boutiqued stores such as the olive oil place, small markets that are like high-quality convenience stores and nothing else.

Another well-done but pay-only story at Business First.  This one examines the recent strong showing of Columbus-based retailer Big Lots.  So here's my excerpted gist of the article:

Why Big Lots is winning at a dim time for retailers

By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter - Columbus Business First

June 3, 2016, 6:00am EDT

The Columbus-based discount retailer, in defiance of current retail trends, not only posted a healthy first quarter but boosted profit expectations for its full year.  Its 3 percent increase in comparable-store sales for the quarter ended April 30 and decision to its bump its earnings forecast to $3.35 to $3.50 a share runs counter to the malaise that is enveloping many retailers.  Even fellow Central Ohio merchants L Brands Inc., Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and DSW Inc. reported disappointing first quarters and have a wary eye on the direction of 2016.

“Didn’t see that coming,” Paul Trussell, analyst with Deutsche Bank Securities Inc., wrote in a May 27 report on Big Lots. “Clearly, the combination of catering to the low-end consumer and selling home- and furniture-related goods is a comparatively safer place to be in retail relative to the high-end, the mall and apparel category whose blow-ups have clouded our thoughts.” ...  It isn’t deeply discounted goods that are bringing shoppers through the doors at Big Lots.  It’s the appeal of the company’s higher-priced merchandise, including furniture, seasonal goods and soft home products like towels and sheets.

For the $5.1 billion Big Lots, such merchandise is a competitive advantage.  Wal-Mart doesn’t sell beds or couches, and dollar stores don’t carry furniture at all.  Big Lots’ furniture sales were up mid-single digit percentages in the quarter from a double-digit increase in the first quarter a year earlier. ... CEO David Campisi in a May 27 conversation with analysts called furniture a “highly fragmented” segment controlled by regional players.  “Here in Columbus you got Value City as an example,” he said.  “Meijer does some business. Or you look at Costco – very, very high-end furniture assortment. So we’re really a value proposition.”

Tanger Outlets Columbus expected to draw huge crowds all opening weekend

tanger-outlets-columbus-express-dje*750xx5295-2987-17-0.jpg

The four-year journey toward the opening of Tanger Outlets Columbus was by all accounts a bumpy road.

Friday – the first day open for the 350,000-square-foot Delaware County outlet center – however, that road would best be described as packed with 15,000 shoppers expected and traffic at noon backed up more than five miles down Interstate 71 from the Route 36/Route 37 interchange.

Yuck.

Dealz at those are overrated.

Dealz at those are overrated.

Columbus retail expert Chris Boring agreez:  http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2016/06/19/1-tanger-outlets-bound-to-take-business-from-other-mas.html

"The whole outlet industry has changed over the last 20 years," Boring said. "Virtually all the merchandise sold is being manufactured for that purpose. It's not out of season, or a closeout or something that has a tiny flaw or excess inventory. Today, they intentionally manufacture merchandise for outlets that's of a lower quality. In the long run, your more savvy shoppers will catch on to that."

But for those who really want to go anyway, here's an article from Business First about how the new Delaware County Tanger outlet mall north of Columbus compares with Tanger's Jeffersonville outlet mall:

Central Ohio retail real estate market posts big occupancy numbers following Tanger opening

By Jeremy Hill, Columbus Business First

Updated: August 9, 2016, 3:29pm EDT

Central Ohio's retail real estate market posted big occupancy gains and a shrinking vacancy rate in the second quarter on the heels of the opening of the Tanger Outlets shopping mall in Delaware County, according to this report.

The report from the Central Ohio Commercial Information Exchange, which used Xceligent data, showed a net gain of 610,324 square feet of occupied retail space in the quarter ended June 30, driven by 350,000 square feet added in June at the Tanger outlet center off Interstate 71.  The total was greater than recorded a year earlier, when the net gain amounted to 155,000 square feet.

( . . . )

The vacancy rate for retail space in the region fell to 6 percent from 6.6 percent a year ago, the report says.  That's 6 percent of 76.05 million total available square feet in the market.

Homage primed for expansion with investment from veteran retailer Express

The biggest purchase to date at Homage isn’t from the likes of LeBron James or Arnold Schwarzenegger– it’s from a fellow Columbus retailer.  Express Inc. has invested $10 million for a minority stake in the vintage-inspired apparel retailer Homage.

Express CEO David Kornberg disclosed the deal during a Wednesday morning conference call with stock analysts, and Homage founder Ryan Vesler blogged about it on the Columbus company's website.  “Leaning on the experience, talent and team of Express will help us reach a goal I’ve long wanted to achieve — to bring Homage to more people,” Vesler wrote.

Homage CEO Jason Block said in an email that Express will consult with the company on an ongoing basis and the investment will allow Homage to expand both its digital and brick-and-mortar presence.

In the above linked article, Boring thinks the Macy's store at Eastland Mall and one of the two Macy's stores at Tuttle Crossing Mall are vulnerable to closure.  Eastland because its an older declining mall property and Tuttle because Macy's inherited a second store there when they merged with Kaufmann's.  If their lease agreement allows it, they could cut expenses by operating only one store at Tuttle.  Boring thought the Easton and Polaris Macy's stores seemed safe from closure.

RadioShack Closing All Central Ohio Stores

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

Posted: March 9, 2017 - 10:19 pm

The latest retail closure news of 2017 comes from Radio Shack, a brand you might not have realized was actually still alive in brick-and-mortar form.  The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today, marking the second time the company has taken that action in the past two years.  That news is paired with a closure announcement that will see the shuttering of 187 stores across the country.

While Radio Shack has not yet publically announced the locations that will be closed, Business First confirmed today that all six Central Ohio locations will be affected by the closure.  That includes locations in Upper Arlington, on the West Side, at the Town & Country Shopping Center, at Northern Lights, in Reynoldsburg and in Heath.

Amazon Opening First Retail Pick-Up Store in Columbus

By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground

March 13, 2017 - 9:54 am

While Amazon.com has often been cited as the number one reason that many traditional brick-and-mortar stores are either shrinking or closing, it’s not preventing the e-commerce giant from entering into the traditional in-person shopping world in a big way.  After recently launching its first regional Amazon Locker at Polaris, the company is bringing its first retail pick-up store to Columbus with a location planned near The Ohio State University.

According to documents submitted to the University Area Review Board this month, Amazon is planning to open at 2114 North High Street, in the former UniversiTEES location.

Amazon Campus store planned at Ohio State University

By Evan Weese, Staff Reporter - Columbus Business First

Updated: March 13, 2017, 2:52pm EDT

The e-commerce giant plans to bring its Amazon Campus concept to a prime location on High Street, just south of Lane Avenue, according to a filing with the University Area Review Board.

Amazon’s streamlined version of a traditional campus bookstore, launched in February 2015 and since expanded to more than a dozen colleges and universities, involves a pickup location for rapid delivery of any of millions of items available online.  The storefronts – at the University of Pennsylvania, Purdue University and University of California Davis, among others – are usually staffed, but carry no inventory.

( . . . )

Amazon’s Ohio State presence will include 900-square-foot storefront and 1,370-square-foot storage area, according to the filing.  The storefront is set to replace UniversiTees at 2114 N. High St. and puts Amazon in competition with Barnes & Noble, less than a mile away at High Street and 11th Avenue.  It's also going to be in competition with an upcoming campus-area Target store at High Street and 16th Avenue.

Finally!

Here's what's coming to Easton this year: New stores, renovations and relocations

Zara is the biggest new addition to Easton Town Center, but it isn’t the only change coming this year.

The lifestyle center is getting a shakeup on multiple fronts as the central Easton Station building gets a multimillion-dollar makeover, eight new tenants move in and a handful of other tenants relocate, a couple of which are making way for the two-story, 36,000-square-foot store from Spain-based Zara coming this fall.

“There’s still a few stars in the ground from Planet Hollywood and the All-Star Cafe,” Beau Arnason, executive vice president of Steiner & Associates, told me.

Steiner and co-developer Georgetown Co. opened the retail and entertainment center in 1999 with tenants that included those long departed movie and sports-themed restaurants.

“It was time to refresh Easton as well,” he said.
