PARK(ing) is a project of Rebar, an artist-activist group based in San Francisco. Metered parking spaces are transformed into PARK(ing) space, improving the quality of urban life temporarily by providing grass, shade and seating, at least until the meter runs out.

As part of a national PARK(ing) day, teams from SPACES and Cleveland Public Art will create three PARK(ing) spaces in Cleveland.

Very cool.  Can't wait to see it!

I really liked this idea when I saw it posted elsewhere on this site.

Spaces, Cleveland's non-profit, artist-run gallery, will stage an artistic protest against asphalt Thursday by transforming three parking spaces into mini-parks with turf, a bench and a tree.

...

The event is part of National PARK(ing) Day, in which teams of artists in New York, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Seattle will create installations similar to those in Cleveland in their own cities.

The idea is to draw national attention to the need for green space in America's urban neighborhoods.

In Cleveland, the event is part of the Spaces exhibition "Street Repairs,'' curated by Cleveland artist Don Harvey. On view through Oct. 20, the show explores artists' responses to "the diversity and complexity of the urban street, and envision it as a place of ever-changing inspiration,'' according to Harvey.

I'll be out tomorrow with my camera...I'll try to get some snaps!

huh?

So, I was really looking forward to this event. One small problem, though: after walking the entire E. 9th/Huron footprint for half an hour, I still couldn't find it. Disappointing. Did anyone manage to find it?

All Points Bulletin!!!

They landed in town around noon.  I just missed the one on W. 6th, north of St. Clair, didn't make it over to E. 9th & Prospect, but got to have a sit (and eat a free lunch!) on W. 25th in front of the Fries & Schuele!  Fantastic!

I'll post pictures soon...

^^I had the same problem 8ShadesofGray, couldn't find it... until I cut back from Huron towards the Colonial Marketplace. Sure enough, it was in a metered space on Prospect instead.

Sorry I took so long to get these up...these are from W. 25th, the "park" that was hosted by Cleveland Public Art & Spaces, if my memory is correct:

This looks really cool! what about the legal implications though? do you need a permit to do this?

Cops were rolling by, smiling.  The organizers were handing out brown bag lunches, which the po-po was more than happy to partake in!
