You're welcome.

Hey, don't blame it on the Internet. When I was at Kent State in the 1980s (prior to the Internet getting big), I was studying my true loves of transportation logistics and urban geography. But I was impatient and wanted to get out there and cause change -- I started instigating a campaign to bring passenger rail service back to the Cleveland - Youngstown - Pittsburgh corridor. My grades went down the toilet and soon I was told to go find my education somewhere else.

The point being, there's a million ways to lose one's focus. But there is only one place where the blame should be targeted.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I block the site when I have big exams coming up, that is my way of self-control. :)

When I am working in my studio at all hours of the night...I often use UO as a break from the monatanous strain of Urban Planning.  I will go and check up on my favorite topics, to 'cut loose' lol!  It is also great having a laptop for those boring classes that have little relevance to one's major......that is the perfect time for some bloggin' :type:

I've been a member of this site since inception, and a member of a global geekboard (skyscraperpage.com)  for almost ten years. So yeah, I suppose I may have spent a little too much time ;-)

Seriously, when I met my S.O., I had to explain this site - and it was almost like "coming out"

I haven't even told my girlfriend about this site. She just wouldn't get it.

My wife is filing for a divorce because of this website.

... Thanks UO for ruining my marriage.

You should look into support groups.

UO?  Urge Overkill?

^Like this thing?

LOL.  No, actual human contact.

That's what keeps going thru my mind

I have managed to break free of this place over the last few months.  So there is hope!

Not that you people don't still own my soul, of course.

Only the fact that I recently moved and the seemingly endless trail of projects I've had to do at work have kept me from visting the site more frequently recently.  As things begin to settle and get back to normal, my universe should once again start to revolve around Urban Ohio.

Yes this place is addictive and I spend too much time on here. I love you guys though :]

...we'd have to figure out what Ohio skyline would work here...maybe rotating logos...cleveland/cincy/cols...on a loop...

Marietta.  It's fitting. :)

That logo is sweet as hell.

It's a pity it's of Houston.

Try Googling "Smurf Porn"

I've explained this site to my girlfriend, and she couldn't think we are all bigger dorks.

And she is exactly correct.

What has that left me?

Well, I'm unemployed and getting a divorce.

But I'm much smarter and have made some fairly "decent" friends. At least I think I have. It all depends on who shows up at the funeral, right?

Musky!  Dude, what is going on?  I'm so sorry to hear about the layoff and pending divorce.  I thought you would be working at CSU and I know you have a kid on the way to college.

This site is a lifeline for me.  But I could see how in conventional life it might be a bit of an impediment.

I just simply have nothing better to do

Wow. I'm so, so sorry. Just know that no matter how bad it gets, there's always help. Your worth as a person is incalculable; you need only look into your childrens' eyes to see that. This is a dark time for you, but there will be light again, and for having waded through all this poison, pain and pointlessness, you'll emerge stronger, smarter and saner.

Also, bummer about the job and marriage.

Musky, I wish you luck. My best friend just went through all this and almost even lost his son in the process. Everything is done now and he is doing much better.

Things will look up!

The first sign is admitting you have a problem lol  Love the UO sign let's buy space on a clear channel billboard......NOT!

Thanks for your kind words everyone - wasn't really expecting that. I know I'll be alright.

You know how people will say something like, "here's to the next chapter in my life?" Well, here's to a whole new book.

But let it be known I hate the year of the pig - bring on the year of the rat.

This site is a support group for urban nerds. I know I can't be the only one who gets blank stares when ranting about urban development in the real world!

It also keeps me sane through boring-@ss lectures where pretentious professors talk above everyone's heads with information and stories not pertainent to the tests.

I must say it is very hard to teach non-UOers urban/suburban history when I just kind of expect all of them to be on the bleeding edge of urban and transportation issues. I forgot that I have to explain all these things and that they don't spend all their time reading newspapers and blogs about these issues.

The first forumer I met was Paul_In_Cleveland - I actually him met long before this site existed. He was running the "Downtown Cleveland Building Projects" site and we had emailed each other about construction updates, etc. Since we both worked downtown, we eventually met for lunch and it was so cool - we were chatting about stuff that our respective S.O.s and friends would just be like "uhh, that's nice... (dork)". We realized that we weren't alone in taking a different route home so we could see a certain building going up, or taking a different way so we'd get to see our preferred view of the skyline. Then ColDayMan was visiting Cleveland and it all went downhill from there... ;-) Seriously though - I love this (and the skyscraperpage.com) forum because I get to gab about architecture, cities, planning, whatever and my partner is supportive because he doesn't have to endure my blathering! Of course, the forum meets are basically a gathering of a bunch of like-minded nutjobs - we'll need to have another one soon!

Yeah, you usually have to engineer the issues into something funny or entertaining or you get the blank stares.

It's always a problem for me though because my friends will want to eat at some place in some boring shopping center off an an exit! Why go to Steak n Shake when you can go to some cool place in OTR or Northside?! (not to mention I get to look at the architecture and observe how the neighborhood evolved) That's where I enter conflict lol they just don't get it!

The sad thing is, most of my college friends are either planners, architects, or engineers...and I get the some reaction from a majority of them.  This is what is really confusing to me...do you not even care about your profession?  Do you have any passion at all, or did you simply choose a major that you thought sounded cool?

Yup same thing with me once again...my friends pretty much know that I am not going to be participating unless it is in the city (preferably the center city).  If they choose to go do something out near Kenwood or wherever, then I simply make other plans with my other set of friends that also have similar mandates as me.

Yeah, another thing with urban planners and arch students-- We (especially you) are so much more up-to-date on everything. I don't know about you but I think I appear to be a "know-it-all" that won't stop prattling on about it with my opinions. I really wish the plan and arch people were more into it. It'll always be a problem though, people who work in the field tend to not like discussing it outside of the workplace. Everyone likes to keep the academics and the profession and all the crazy politics that dictate everything, separate from the rest of their lives. It's hard to do that when you go on this site every day and it's something you begin to think about so much (maybe too much, I don't know).

P.S. Randy I'm calling you next time my friends want to go to some lame chain place  :shoot:

I really wish the plan and arch people were more into it.

That's an interesting oberservation.

This was years and years ago, but when i was in arch school it was sort of like the Marines or something, you were indoctrinated and "on an mission"..."architecture is not just a job, but a way of life".....

... probably due to the nature of studios being close-knit places and the school being  fairly small and it's own college. From what I saw the LA program was the same way (LAs and Archs shared a studio & arch history during sophmore year)

From what I recall there wasn't too much interaction with others on campus, including the greek system.  Very few pledges to frats and such, thought that was chaning with younger students.

My connections outside came through roommates, which introduced me to the "theatre crowd" and the "campus politics" crowd.

I really wish the plan and arch people were more into it.

It's amazing, for example, how many planners (faculty included) are completely clueless about the Cincinnati Streetcar.  When my guest editorial was published, in the Enquirer, I was approached by a few professors and the dean about my piece.  I was surprised to come off in those conversations as the "expert" on the topic.

Even if you don't like the plan...how the heck can you not be informed about it - especially if you're a freaking Urban Planner.

Try getting information from locally-based architecture firms for a web site like mine. brickwall.gif

Pelli, RTKL, HOK, Gehry - all completely happy to provide me information (and lots of it) for buildings on my site over the years. Sure, my site's a small-time amateur operation that's not going to do much for them, and they could easily have junk-mailed my emails, but they didn't. That's a lot more than I can say for the Cleveland firms I contacted. Well, one did reply but it was an accusatory "well, why would you want that kind of information?!?". I'd love to get more for Cleveland-firm designed buildings on my site but apparently they can't be bothered. :?

I really wish the plan and arch people were more into it.

They spend so much time researching international development trends they don't even notice what's happening one mile south of the DAAP building

Btw, I think we're a few of like 20 people in our age group who can name 4 city council members. I actually think Leslie Ghiz is really hot  :-o

If you are young, go to public meetings/forums, and stay somewhat informed by doing a little reading...you'll be quickly appointed to boards left and right.  The politicians desperately want to connect with the youth out there...and when they see the same face show up at a few meetings in a row, and actually look interested...then poof.

I know Mayor Mallory and his staff, Roxanne Qualls, Michael Moore (City Architect), bar/club owners, etc...plus I serve on the Mayor's YPKC, I'm the assistant director for the Cincinnati Hillside Trust, and do some work in OTR...oh yeah, and I am quite involved with the Cincinnati Streetcar effort.  These are just some of the things I'm involved with around town.  Like I said, all you have to do is show up and be informed...I guess that's too tough for many people in our age group.  :|

I think I would be lost without this site now.. That could be a good or bad thing haha.  But seriously, I spend so much time on this forum, it has inspired a large creative and educational move, and the people on it are just amazing!!  It is so funny when I mention the site or the issues it covers to my friends, 'cause they just look at me like "OKAYYY" haha. They just don't understand. This is such a great place to get a laugh, get moral support and get an education.. all at the same time and I am so glad I found this site... even if it's consuming my life haha..

Oh... and Randy.. when I saw your post about weather or not to capitalize "Downtown" I nearly had a heart attack because I thought I was the only one who thought about something like that hahaha.  :-o

God bless, Musky.
