Shows that a citizen can make a difference. "Pester, push and praise" is the advocates' MO.

  • Looks like the H5 data center, 1625 Rockwell, plans to add a single-level, 20,000-square-foot building on the west side of the site to accommodate switchgear, generators and underground fuel tanks.

Aww, shucks, you're making me blush smiley-ashamed002.gif.  I had a whole lotta help from the City of Cleveland, specifically Councilman Cimperman and Director Brown.

Around every good advocate is a whole team of people they enlisted. Don't blush. Wear it with pride, dear.

I know no one likes people just bumping threads by asking if anything has happened, but doctabroccoli seems to be very involved with this project and I haven't heard anything since she mentioned they were cherry picking loose debris in order to start the facade renovation.

  • 8 months later...

And the longest minor construction project in the history of mankind is taking a few more baby steps forward....

They're working on the facade again as well as digging for wiring and concrete pads for lights for the parking lot.

(Excuse the cell phone pic and the fact that it's already a couple days out-of-date)

I like the arrow in the upper-right corner.

At this rate, they should have grass planted by January -- 2014.

Ha, I just noticed that.  That's actually the little antenna for my car alarm attached to my windshield!

And it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to plant grass in the dead of winter.  Jerks.

Now isn't everyone happy part of that building was torn down a few years ago?...  Who could have predicted this would be the situation?...

When in doubt, tear it down.......  gaah.gif

Was driving by and didn't get a good look at it in the rain, but it looked huge.  I guess it's an improvement over the dirt field...

Its paved and striped, I never see anyone parking there though.

Sorry - I'm only on sporadically with the new job now.  The lot is not open yet.  It still needs landscaping, a fence, and a money box.  They have also started putting the fake windows on the south side of the building.

BYTEGRID Buys Massive Data Center in Downtown Cleveland, Secures $100M Credit Facility

By Adrian Maties, Associate Editor

BYTEGRID, a privately held data center company headquartered in Northern Virginia, has acquired the Cleveland Technology Center (CTC), Cleveland’s market leader in secured telecommunications and data center facilities. The price of the transaction was not disclosed.

The Cleveland Technology Center is located at 1425 Rockwell Ave., in the city’s “Health-Tech Corridor.” It encompasses 333,215 square feet of highly secure data center space and sits on top of one of the largest fiber point of presence (POP) sites in the state. The property is supported by redundant 20 MVA power feeders from two separate utility substations, with access to additional capacity.

According to BYTEGRID, the CTC is now 53 percent occupied by a variety of Internet and communications service providers and government agencies. The property’s previous owners made significant investments to upgrade the facility and turn it into one of Cleveland’s top data center locations, and so will BYTEGRID. The company plans to turn 30,000 square feet of vacant space into enterprise-class, mission-critical data center space with more than 4 megawatts of power capacity.

Filling in the huge windows with brick looks horrible on all the other unrenovated warehouses in that area, and it'll look horrible on that one. Even if they plan on "modernizing" the entrance. I wish I had 4 hands to give that rendering 4 thumbs down.

ByteGrid going forward with huge new data center in downtown Cleveland

By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer

on February 12, 2014 at 7:00 AM, updated February 12, 2014 at 7:36 AM

ByteGrid enters a wide open market. It expects its downtown data center, the largest of its kind in the state, to appeal to corporations, hospital systems and institutions with large amounts of data to sort and store.

It's touting the center as an economic catalyst and some observers agree.

Virginia-based ByteGrid bought the complex last year with plans to expand an existing telecommunication center. On January 27, it secured state tax credits for $100 million in expected investments.

A change in state tax law allows ByteGrid to share those tax credits with its tenants, introducing the concept of wholesale data centers to Ohio.

According to ByteGrid's business model, major clients will lease space in the center and move in their own equipment.

Parent said ByteGrid is talking with several potential clients but declined to name them. Because of its tax exemptions, the company is required to create 20 new jobs at the center.

"I expect it will be significantly more than that," Parent said.

Found another article about the Downtown Technology Center.  It doesnt seem like too much new news, but figured I'd post the update here.

A Canton tech pioneer, SecureData 365, plans advanced data center in downtown Cleveland

CANTON, Ohio -- Northeast Ohio has the trappings of fast and efficient digital communications--including access to fiber optic highways and relatively cheap, reliable power. Yet most corporate and commercial data centers have been built elsewhere.

SecureData 365, a Canton-area technology pioneer, thinks the tide is turning and it intends to ride the wave. The five-year-old company will soon expand its operations to Cleveland, becoming the largest tenant in the re-emerging Cleveland Technology Center downtown.

Company executives say they plan to invest $2 million initially to create Ohio's most advanced data center and that their customers will invest $50 million more in equipment.

"We think we have the right model at the right time," said Michael Campanelli, the company's executive vice president.

By running two nearby data centers on separate power grids, SecureData expects to lure back local companies that have been sending their digital information elsewhere to be managed and protected.

It's a plan that could speed Cleveland into a rapidly growing industry, experts say.

New Capacity Powering Turnkey Colocation, Cloud and Compliant Solutions From Cleveland's Largest Data Center

CLEVELAND, OH, Jun 08, 2015 (Marketwired via COMTEX) -- Responding to increasing enterprise demand for mission critical data center capacity, ByteGrid Holdings LLC, a leading provider of data center and end-to-end IT infrastructure services, today announced the commissioning of 45,000 square feet of new data center space and 4 megawatts of power in the Cleveland Technology Center (CTC) on Rockwell Avenue in downtown Cleveland.

Following its' acquisition of the CTC, ByteGrid embarked on a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the facility. The new build out was completed in less than four months and encompasses 26,000 square feet of new, high density raised floor and 19,000 square feet of conditioned space for mechanical, electrical and power equipment, and new technical office space.

ByteGrid follows a strategic "build to demand" model and is now preparing to build out an additional 30,000 square feet to meet additional demand.

Overall, the new data center is optimized to provide turnkey solutions for large and midsize enterprises and federal organizations seeking high performance mission critical data center colocation, managed hosting and compliant hybrid cloud solutions.

"Since its purchase of the CTC two years ago, ByteGrid has established itself as a valued member of the Cleveland business community," said Tracey Nichols, Director, Cleveland Department of Economic Development. "We applaud ByteGrid's commitment to invest and rejuvenate the CTC as it symbolizes Cleveland's business transformation that continues to gain momentum."

"ByteGrid provides a critical point of presence for the Everstream ultra high speed, high capacity network, and has been a collaborative partner since arriving in Cleveland two years ago," said Brett Lindsey, Everstream President. "As we grow our business, we expect ByteGrid's data center and its broad range of connectivity options, including up to 100 GB connectivity, to serve as an important technology resource for growing northeastern Ohio businesses."

A launch party to celebrate the expansion is set to take place at the CTC on June 11 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. For more information and to register visit this link.

ByteGrid's Cleveland data center encompasses 333,215 square feet of highly secure Tier 3 data center space featuring more than 10 carriers on Net and sits on top of one of the largest fiber point of presence (POP) sites in Ohio. In addition, the location bisects major Midwest and east coast business centers making it an ideal disaster recovery location for markets such as Chicago and New York.

"ByteGrid is a big asset to Cleveland's IT capabilities, including our new 100 Gigabit fiber network under construction," said Frank G. Jackson, Mayor of the City of Cleveland. "Their work here demonstrates ByteGrid's capability in performing a multitude of tasks necessary for the development of a successful data center."

"The renovation of the CTC into a multi-tenant data center delivering turnkey enterprise hosting solutions in less than four months is remarkable," said John Englhardt, President, E Technologies Inc. "We partnered with Eaton corporation to deliver the electrical power system which is truly world class in terms of redundancy, fault-tolerance, and operating efficiency. No corners were cut. It required ByteGrid to take on significant business risk but they did it. They also worked with state and local government in a highly cooperative manner that resulted in significant tax incentives for customers."

"We value our investment in Cleveland and are proud to have created a significant IT resource for the business community," said Ken Parent, CEO of ByteGrid. "Data Centers are the commerce platforms of the 21st century and create business ecosystems of customers and vendors that contribute to a 'whole is greater than the sum of the parts' phenomena that will benefit many other businesses in the area."

New data center touted as latest effort to spur economic development in Cleveland

By Marcia Pledger, The Plain Dealer

on June 11, 2015 at 12:10 PM, updated June 12, 2015 at 7:08 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – ByteGrid, a national data storage company, celebrates a grand opening today that business leaders and members of the technology community say is another catalyst for economic development.

Data centers generally have few employees, so they create little traffic. And unlike residential development, they don't require new spending on schools, parks and libraries. But they pump in millions of dollars in annual tax revenue and spark economic growth.

In January, ByteGrid secured tax credits for $100 million in expected investments. A change in state tax law allows ByteGrid to share those tax credits with its tenants, introducing the concept of wholesale data centers to Ohio.

Bytegrid expects its downtown data center - the largest of its kind in the state - to appeal to corporations, hospital systems and institutions with large amounts of data to sort and store. Cities such as Chattanooga, Austin, and Kansas City are seeing revitalization due to advanced utilities like high-speed networks.

^ Nice news from H5. I believe the total building is 333,000 sq ft and H5 had been using about 175K of it; so the expansion would take them up to 200K, still leaving lots of room for growth.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

Good news!

Looks like the H5 data center, 1625 Rockwell, plans to add a single-level, 20,000-square-foot building on the west side of the site to accommodate switchgear, generators and underground fuel tanks.

EDIT: Also, the exteriors of the existing buildings will be renovated/repainted with the easternmost building proposed to have new mechanical louvers in angled, finished steel shrouds. At first, I thought they were solar panels.
