Posted September 26, 200618 yr Is there any kind of wakable route b/w Mt. Adams and downtown? I realize 71 makes such a walking route very difficult but I think an overpass of some kind would be very doable. Distance-wide the areas are so close to each other yet in reality, they seem so isolated. It would be nice to connect them somehow.
September 26, 200618 yr There already is a bridge that crosses I-71 and leads up to Mt. Adams...I run over it quite frequently and watch the people on I-71 staring at me in utter confusion. The bridge starts across from the Greyhound station, takes you over Gilbert and I-71, and ends at the street that Hixson is on. There are then stairs and paths leading all the way up Mt. Adams. The problem, however, is that the trees and bushes are not cut often enough (if at all) and usually block the stairs. It's really unfortunate.

I really think that one great thing Cicny did in the last 10 years was make the Banks accessible to downtown w/ the several street connections that now exist (previously I believe there was only one overpass). While I think constructing roadways/bridges to go over the highway is unrealistic, perhaps a series of 3 or so pedestrian overpasses may create. Mt Adams is such a jewel and it would be nice for visitors downtown to have easy access to it. Sure its a big hill but wouldn't be much different than walking around in San Fran would it?
September 26, 200618 yr We did a hypothetical project in a studio a couple of years ago....and someone suggested creating a lift of somesort going from Broadway Commons to the top of the hill. Just a thought :|
September 26, 200618 yr At one time there was an Incline that climbed the hill from downtown. Today, the fastest route is by walking along Columbia Parkway from Fifth Street where you can access the steps that climb to the Immaculata Church. The Incline: Image via Cincinnati-Transit.net
September 26, 200618 yr There was some discussion of walking to Mt. Adams in this thread that Mark posted...unfortunately, his original picture isn't there anymore, but the discussion of walking to Mt. Adams is! Here's what I posted: I live right near the Twin Lakes, and my wife and I walk to Newport On The Levee fairly often, we walked to a friend's place in Covington to see the fireworks, to a Reds Game, to dinner at Carol's on Main, etc., etc. It's definitely easier to walk downhill than uphill, but it well within walking distance. There are a number of people living in Mt. Adams who walk to work downtown every day. Here's a map with a couple of the routes highlighted - blue is a stairway/walkway...there are definitely other methods from other areas, but it's probably no more than a mile or two from Fountain Square to the Art Museum... And Eighth & State posted this: Secret passageway: There's a sidewalk on the ramp from I-471 north to Sixth Street. To get to Mt. Adams from downtown, take the walk on the north side of Sixth Street as far east as you can go. The walk connects to Monastery Street.
