September 28, 200618 yr Thanks! Always good to see some Detroit. What's the new building? (Photo 3 or so)
September 28, 200618 yr ^Yeah. There are a few big ones going up downtown. What's what? By the way, some nice shots. Buildings! Buildings! Buildings!
September 28, 200618 yr Nice shots. Detroit seems to provide a wealth of angles and views, because every forumer who posts photos has something unique to offer. I'm fascinated with the Guardian Building. I haven't been to Detroit in many years, and back then I wasn't really tuned in to the wonderfulness of downtown architecture.
September 28, 200618 yr rob, I absolutely love the Guardian building. The inside is gorgeous too. Guys, just wait another couple years, Detroit is coming back. There are so many old buildings being renovated or planned on being renovated.
September 28, 200618 yr You want a study in Detroit-style density/no density? Check this: http://detroityes.com/webisodes/2004/13-UrbanPrairie/St-Cyril.htm The whole detroityes site is required bookmarking for anybody interested in urbanity. Truly and simply awesome.
September 28, 200618 yr Actually, the building under construction in Photo #5 is the new MGM Grand permanent casino. Michigan Avenue is in the foreground, with the Lodge Freeway running under the bridge. The black skyscraper is the DTE Energy building. Motor City Casino is located on Grand River at the Lodge, a few blocks off to the left of this photo. True, Detroit is rehabbing more than they used to, but they're also tearing down a lot too, leaving more empty lots. Major upcoming renovations include the Book-Cadillac and Fort-Shelby hotels. One could say these are "reclamations", as they've both been vacant for decades. At the same time, historically significant structures such as the Statler-Hilton and Madison-Lenox have unfortunately bit the dust. The casinos are by far the largest and most significatn projects currently under construction in Detroit.
September 28, 200618 yr True, Detroit is rehabbing more than they used to, but they're also tearing down a lot too, leaving more empty lots. Case in point, the Motown Records office tower at the corner of Woodward Ave. and Fisher Freeway (I-75), torn down last January to provide much-needed parking for Superbowl XL. The irony of this was lost on virtually everyone.
September 28, 200618 yr My favorite building in Detroit is actually the Fisher Building. Good stuff. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 28, 200618 yr My favorite building in Detroit is actually the Fisher Building. Good stuff. It's no Top of Troy, but it'll do.
September 29, 200618 yr Top of Troy has Ruth Chris. Fisher Building has a crackhead. Fine, Top of Troy wins. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
September 30, 200618 yr Looks like you know your stuff about Detroit. It was too bad seeing the Statles and Madison-Lenox go but there has been good news lately. The GAR building is up for sale and part of it is whoever takes it has to rehab it. Actually, the building under construction in Photo #5 is the new MGM Grand permanent casino. October 13, 200618 yr I miss lakers (the cargo ships, not the basketball team). there is something to be said about a lazy day on the river, drinking and watching them go by. At least here in cleveland, if i chose so I can live downtown along the cuyahoga and watch them try and navigate their way through. Which is quite entertaining.
November 29, 200618 yr looks like there is a real wealth of architecture downtown. too bad about those gm buildings though.
November 29, 200618 yr ^All Detroit restaurants line up to kiss the ass of the original Buddy's Pizzeria at Conant & McNichols.
November 29, 200618 yr Pizzapapalis is the best IMO, even though the prices are outrageously high. I'm willing to make the sacrifices for a $40 pie, and it seems many Detroiters are willing to as well.

I'm willing to make the sacrifices for a $40 pie, and it seems many Detroiters are willing to as well. I nearly died when I stumbled into pizzapapalis for the first time in years. I promptly regretted not getting buddy's. (hell shields would have done)
January 31, 200718 yr Book-Cadillac Hotel Built 1924, closed 1984. Being renovated and should be ready in 2008. February 1, 200718 yr 60 HP?? what a piece of crap my old 70's datsun b210 has more power than that. LOL nice pics
February 6, 200718 yr Detroit got b*tchslapped by Adam Smith's Invisible Hand. It's still a cool city though. I wanted to go to the auto show this year but its too damn cold for that. Detroit is not fun in the winter.

February 6, 200718 yr Darn you Detroit....you have soooo much potential, but you never fail to dissapoint me with your troubles :| That bldg coming down is a terrible loss, and its nice to see some of those other great bldgs being rehabed!! But it is still troubling to hear the stories out of Detroit as becoming a trailblazer in 'urban farming'. Many of their vacant lots are being reverted back to agriculture uses and even some natural species are beginning to return to the inner-city of Detroit  Thats not a good thing to hear...Keep on fightin' Detroit!!!!
February 7, 200718 yr I planned on going to Chicago last weekend; I mean if Detroit had more to offer I wouldn't mind it but why go to a city at its worst (thats saying a lot). CDawg you wear mesh shorts and a hoodie everywhere you go don't you?

I wonder how extensive the farming is though. It seems like...to mess with that land you're going to go through a lot of bs regarding whatever testing is required for toxins in the soil. If they start selling produce from Detroit they better label it so I know what not to buy. Im not trying to grow a third arm.
February 7, 200718 yr The area where my friends and I purchased a house had contaminated soil. So don't eat anything from Detroit's East side.
February 7, 200718 yr Hope you don't mind me posting a few pics here Zach. I was helping a friend do a study on transit in tha D. Because we procrastinated we weren't downtown until around 7. You know it! Hayward's a balla and carries $20's and $100's, he has no quarters. The study should be simple....no one was riding that night!
February 7, 200718 yr Hayward's a balla and carries $20's and $100's, he has no quarters. Like it's so hard to sneak onto the people mover. Those lights are so warm when you stand directly underneath :]
February 7, 200718 yr Its okay C-Dawg, Im the local wanksta at the architecture school. Or at least one of them because it's actually quite full of them. http://flickr.com/photos/70205638@N00/281009081/in/set-506927/ Okay I'm not really like that... believe me, i just had my cornrows taken out. ik
February 7, 200718 yr Np Ian, you and anyone else can feel free to add any Detriot photos here. Here are pictures taken yesterday while giving a friend a tour of the city. She wanted to see its really old churches which I will post in a huge thread sometime.
February 7, 200718 yr The area where my friends and I purchased a house had contaminated soil. So don't eat anything from Detroit's East side. Damn. I always wondered how that urban farming would work out... There are actually natural ways to clean contaminated soil out. An easy way is to plant sunflowers....3-4 rotations of a sunflower crop usually cleans out the soil from most contaminants. That is the FYI for the day! :speech:
February 7, 200718 yr ^ That's not a good thing to do in the hood though. It would raise properties values, and you know what nearby residents might do.....

Will that remove any lead from the soil?
February 8, 200718 yr ^Yes...I have a friend using sunflowers for that very purpose on a lot he owns in OTR...he wants to garden on it once it is cleaned up.
February 12, 200718 yr ^ My finished model of Detroit. We architecture students work hard as hell  Here's another strange photoshop edit. This image was going to get thrown out, but I instead did a bunch of random effects on it, and for some reason it made it to flickr's most interesting page, and is also featured on several Detroit related websites.
