February 13, 200718 yr I use a half working Canon S2 1S. It still takes pretty good photos but the manual switch doesn't work. The first picture was actually photoshopped heavily as well. There's no shadows you will notice so it kind of looks CG. I need to file my insurance claim yet, so I can get a new camera soon.
May 10, 200718 yr Forgot to post these pics I took in March Globe Trading Company (supposed to be renovated sometime)
May 28, 200718 yr I went to the Tigers game last night (they lost :( ) but it was a beautiful nite. People out everywhere. Woodward in a traffic jam. That's the Detroit I like (minus the traffic jam). But, I took Woodward downtown from 8 Mile and I couldn't believe how much vacant land is along that strip. Makes me wonder what it looked like in its heyday.
January 14, 200817 yr Detroit, circa Hey Day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQxrhiraoUg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRj4_qkqgXo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVhTdKnDUW0
January 14, 200817 yr They must have been yanked a minute after I posted them. How perfect it that. Detroit can NEVER get a break.
January 14, 200817 yr ^Whatever, 9 Mile. By the way, the Detroit vids were not embeddable. Check out this youtube user for tons o' cool old Michigan/Detroit footage: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=gordon409 (Click on his "Most Viewed" tab).
January 14, 200817 yr Putting the "Marshall" in Marshall Mathers. You should see us rumble with the Catalpa Boys.
January 14, 200817 yr Putting the "Marshall" in Marshall Mathers. You should see us rumble with the Catalpa Boys. We'll stop you cold at Vinsetta. Okay, I'm calling this whole exchange off right here.
April 2, 200817 yr Oh no! More Detroit! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 2, 200817 yr Woodward Ave. reminds me a lot of Fourth St. in Cincinnati. Not so much in the pic on the first page of this thread but I felt the same vibe in person.
April 2, 200817 yr The Well is a quintessential downtown regulars bar. Always someone in there. Completely mixed. Total pretense: 0.
April 2, 200817 yr The building in that second photo looks like a real fixer upper opportunity. its just collapsed yesterday.
April 2, 200817 yr The Well is a quintessential downtown regulars bar. Always someone in there. Completely mixed. Total pretense: 0. I hate the well. lack or pretense is one thing....lack of any discernible character is another. I guess I just had higher hopes for it when it opened considering its location and potential when considering the options.

I guess I just had higher hopes for it when it opened considering its location and potential when considering the options. Maybe I was there on a good day, or maybe I'm just homesick, or maybe they've decided to try to reach the sports-bar crowd (I haven't set foot in the place in 10 years). I just remember The Well as a no-bullsh!t type place, which, with few exceptions, has been tough to find in Columbus.
April 2, 200817 yr That was always one of my personal selling points on so many bars downtown, pretty much every place was give me a beer and no pretentiousness. Honest Jons? Anyone?
April 2, 200817 yr Oh hell yes. He's over on Cass now. You haven't lived until you've done one of his Detroit river kayaking tours. Seriously.
April 2, 200817 yr My guess is that pretentiousness was exported to the suburbs but I've never been to Royal Oak or Birmingham.
April 2, 200817 yr My guess is that pretentiousness was exported to the suburbs but I've never been to Royal Oak or Birmingham. birmingham mostly yes. Royal oak, hit or miss. Some bars are 100% pretentious. there's still a few good ones, but even those are slipping away.
April 2, 200817 yr well at least the jukebox is still good. speaking of jukebox, i'd rather be at honest jons? all things considered.
April 2, 200817 yr Exceptionally cool place. If you really want to know what makes Detroit tick, get to know John Thompson.
June 20, 200816 yr Nice vid. Btw, the "almost lost detroit" sample refers to the partial Meltdown at DTE's Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station. The plant was a total loss and later replaced.
August 4, 200816 yr Yes, what a juicy gem. This one MUST be saved/reused... Good to see all the other rehabbing going on. Detroit's so loaded with beautiful old buildings and potential. If they can get the proposed rail (Woodward LRT connecting w/ the Ann Arbor commuter rail line), the old dog Detroit would show us some new tricks.

Id put this right on the BP footprint at larchmere and Kemper. It would be fierce!!
August 5, 200816 yr Book-Cadillac is looking fantastic. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
August 5, 200816 yr That castle one is the GAR building. It was for awhile owned by the city, picked up by Ilitch and of course sits empty. I told everybody a couple years ago, it would sit empty for years and I got a lot of flack for saying it. Wel..... it's still empty, but it appears it's red now so something is being done. Oh, and the burned out Forest Arms Apartments in the last photos. Renovate faster damnit! Alright, I'll get back to playing my piano in the grand lobby of Detroit's Lee Plaza
August 7, 200816 yr I went to Detroit for the first time recently and walked around for a few hours. Observations: * No retail. None of any sort was observed aside from a few carryouts and not many of those. My girlfriend says she saw one store. * emptiness. once you get away from the river and the 'renaissance' center it really thins out. * what is the vacancy rate on these buildings? * once you get outside of the downtown there are huge empty tracks of land, what happened? * Greektown is nice * The people mover is a textbook example of what not to do with a small scale urban transportation system. * pro sports teams aren't enough to maintain a downtown, even if you have all four * Downtown didn't even feel slightly dangerous * they have a cool fountain statue in the middle of the city. * the city feels french in its layout with diagonal, esplanaded boulevards * If you are a diner and your employees wear paper hats, how can you not sell milkshakes?
August 7, 200816 yr That shirt is a spin-off of another one that says "Welcome to Detroit - Sorry we missed you last time" with bullet holes in the t-shirt. This one looks better but they stole the idea.
