Posted October 4, 200618 yr Jackson (population 35,152) is the county seat of Jackson County. It was named after Andrew Jackson. Downtown has many nice churches which is where we will start.
October 4, 200618 yr It's almost like the Lima of Michigan. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 4, 200618 yr Jackson has some pretty neat buidings. The railroad depot there is a real vintage gem. Great skies in some of those photos.
October 4, 200618 yr I think the architecture/quantity of major buildings surpasses Lima somewhat, although they seem to be about as healthy. Certainly an interesting place, that tall slinder tower boggles the mind. Thanks for the pics!
October 4, 200618 yr I think the architecture/quantity of major buildings surpasses Lima somewhat Totally agreed. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 5, 200618 yr I agree it's a Lima-like downtown. But the skyscrapers are taller and a bit more distinctive, I think. And there seems to be a bit more street life.
October 5, 200618 yr Ahh, Michigan. Home of the invisible pedestrian. Nice shots. Jackson is yet another MI town I've overlooked. Growing up a Michigander, It's tough to scrub oneself of the Prison/Nugent association. I'd compare it to a less run-down/carved-up/Phoenix-Centered Pontiac.
October 5, 200618 yr Thanks for the comments guys. I was surprised at the size of Jackson's buildings considering it only has a population of around 35,000. Even though I live in Michigan this was my first time going there and I didn't know that it was a ghetto like someone mentioned.
October 5, 200618 yr Nice pictures, ZachariahDaMan. As others have said, I got a Lima vibe from the picture. But certainly a nicer version of Lima. I have passed this along to my friend in Lima government as a possible similar sized city to look at and see if there are things that they could emulate from Jackson. (many parts of Lima's core don't have crosswalks or even sidewalks). You're exaggerating, C-Dawg.
October 5, 200618 yr Wow, that IS impressive, actually. In Port Huron about two hours away, they have the same size population but there aren't any historic, tall buildings like that. What is the history of that town? Did the population used to be larger? I know Port Huron has pretty much always been about 35,000~ from the start.
October 6, 200618 yr This town has some nice sksycrapers..that deco one is good, but that tall brick "sliver building" is pretty unusual as it is so thin. What was the deal with Jackson to get these tall buildings? What is the history of that town? Did the population used to be larger? Good questions...and I share them. I bet a good place to start for an answer is the old WPA guide to Michigan, which, if is like the Ohio guide, will have a history of the city and its 1930/40 population as well as discussion of its economy/industry.
October 6, 200618 yr Apparently the railroads played a strong part in Jackson's early growth... http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Stories/JacksonEvolution.htm
October 6, 200618 yr You're exaggerating, C-Dawg. It isn't the first time, ya know... "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 6, 200618 yr Don't forget: Jackson is the Birthplace of the REPUBLICAN PARTY!!! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 6, 200618 yr I believe both can claim it (?) http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Republican_Party "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
October 15, 200618 yr Dandy tour. The Michigan Theatre is a gem of a building. I remembered being quite surprised when I visited Jackson. Quite the collection of taller buildings for a smaller city. Thanks for sharing your pics with us.
October 23, 200618 yr Thanks for the tour. I had friends that lived in Jackson for a couple of years, but we never made it downtown.
