I don't even know why they are wasting time on this. From the 10/8/06 Journal-News:

The local battle over tanning heats up

By Lisa A. Bernard, Hamilton Journal News | October 8, 2006

A proposal to ban teens from using tanning salons in the city has local physicians and area business owners going head to head.  On Wednesday the Hamilton City Council is slated to hear arguments on both sides of the issue during a two hour special work session slated to begin at 5 p.m.

The proposal calls for allowing only minors with written medical prescriptions to use tanning salons. Ohio currently allows minors who have parental permission to use indoor tanning facilities.  The council is set to vote on the proposed ban Oct. 25. If passed, the measure would be the first of its kind in the nation.

I dont understand the whole tanning thing anyway. I hate girls with fake tans. Especially bleach blonde girls; it doesn't even look remotely natural. B#$%^ you look like a giant tangerine!!!!!

I'm not sure why cities get involved in these things.

Maybe they want to be the first in the nation like they were the first town to have an exclamation point after their name!

^LOL, they might be better off trying another piece of puctuation, how about Hamilton?, ***Hamilton***, Ham$lton, or H@milton?

Seriously, these are better ideas than the ban.

Well I don't think this should be a local ordinance. Hell, I'm sure the Hamilton teen population could just go next door to tan if they wanted to. But maybe a ban should be considered statewide or nationwide. They aren't allowed to buy cigarettes, so I don't know why they should be allowed to tan. Cancer is bad.

... Cancer is bad.

I've tried cancer a couple of times, and I really don't recommend it. If all other weight loss strategies have failed, though ...

This is the eventual goal of this movement.  They are wanting to start somewhere and then move it towards a statewide issue.  This same group of individuals pushed for some kind of other tanning bed regulations (i think parent approval needed if under 18).  This has been moved to a statewide law (I doubt how much it is actually enforced).

But nonetheless, this group of individuals is trying to take this to the next level.  I would also say that I think there are more important issues, in our state, that we should be worrying about.

Hamilton City Council backs off of tanning ban

By Ken Yon-Hardy, Hamilton Journal News | October 12, 2006

It was over Wednesday night before it even started.  The Hamilton City Council's proposal to ban minors from tanning salons in the city is no more. Mayor Don Ryan made that announcement before a special meeting to address the issue, which Wednesday night attracted about 75 people from Columbus to Cincinnati.

Under the proposal Hamilton was considering, minors would have been prohibited from using indoor tanning salons within the city unless they had a doctor's prescription. Wednesday night's announcement effectively ends more than three weeks of the council considering a measure that — if passed — would have been the first of its kind in the nation.

Bill targets teen tanning

Teen tanning rules in Ohio would become some of the toughest in the nation if state lawmakers approve a proposal that would require anyone under 18 to get a doctor's note before hopping in tanning beds.

Rep. Courtney Combs, a Hamilton Republican, plans to re-introduce the measure this week - a move he says will decrease the time teens spend in tanning beds and could, ultimately, reduce the number of future cancer cases. It would trump current rules that require teens to get their parents' permission first.

None of yall should be tanning, in a tanning salon.  If God wanted to give you a tan he would made you a person of color!

Tanning is a waste of money.  The first time I went to a tanning salon was right before my wedding.  I was concerned that I would fry in Hawaii when going on the honeymoon (I usually have that white IT person's anti-tan look going).  I only made a few quick visits.  I really don't think it made me look any better in my wedding dress, and I still got burnt in Hawaii.  What a waste of time and money.  I should have known better (getting a base tan idea is a joke), and I haven't been back to one since.

^Pfft - studies have proven that in moderation, tanning can be very helpful for Seasonal Affective Disorder; and MUCH more importantly, I go tanning (just enough to get a hint of color, not George Hamilton) so I can travel to warm-weather places and not be beet-red after the first day at the pool.

True, but you can use a light box for the same effect, and not get skin cancer and early aging from it.  :)

Yeah, you white kids need to relax with stuff like this!!

But everyone - regardless of race - should remember to put on sunscreen and lip balm.  Please wear a hat and sunglasses.  Skin cancer is serious business.

Wipe off your sweat as that actually makes it easier to burn and let cancer causing rays damage your skin.

I don't believe a light box would help with Vitamin D deficiency, however.  The problem with tanning beds is that they give off more "bad" UV-rays than the sun, and less of the ones that help the skin produce Vitamin D (I can't remmeber which is which out of UVA, UVB, and UVC rays).  They still would have to cause you to produce more Vitamin D than a light box, I would assume.

You're better off getting your vitamin D from food sources, not UV rays.  I mean, if you're REALLY all that concerned about your Vit D you can take one tsp of cod liver oil every day and have like 300% of your daily suggested amount, or eat a piece of salmon or whatever.  Not that I avoid the sun.  I do wear sunscreen and love being outdoors in nice weather, I love going to the pool, etc., but I think tanning beds are just awful and do much more damage to your skin than being out in real light/sun.

*Ahem*, one thing about not reproducing? Instead of saving up for their college tuition I can treat myself to some laser resurfacing and whatnot when the need arises :-D And honestly, what's the point of living to be 110 if it means being pasty?

Ms. Honey, I'm so glad YOU said that!

Dah-ling, do you really want laser resurfacing?  Don't you want age gracefully without any "enhancements"?  A wrinkle here or there ads character.

My face, forearms and calves are really tan right now just from working outside just for one day. I need to go to the tanning salon so my whole body is tan, not just some parts. I hate having a farmers tan. I'd rather not have a tan but if I'm going to have one accidentally I at least want a full body tan.

You white folks crack me up with that.  Child just take your shirt off.  Thats what I do.  It evens everything out.

In my opinion, a decent tan is so worth the melanoma. ;)

LAWD!!!!!!

Is a tan really that important??

No.

No.

So you would agree, you people, need a little color but going to a tanning salon is overkill?

Yes, how could one go out in public without a tan or at least a nice shade of orange? Which reminds me, I need to go tanning...

I don't know.  I have a natural tan, I never leave home without! ;) ;D  I do get a nice tan line, but I'm careful out in the sun.

Haha, you are so funny!

My mother and brother are a little darker than me, but get so dark in the summer. When we were down in Mexico you could have mistaken my brother for a local, lol.

No.

So you would agree, you people, need a little color but going to a tanning salon is overkill?

YOU PEOPLE?!?!?!  :-P

Yes, but I guess I can't speak for people that are very light.  I get tan pretty easily, and just being outside for normal activity in the summer gives me a decent tan.  I never purposely try to tan, but that might just be because I don't need to.  Even if I was very light and didn't tan easily, I can't imagine it being that important to endanger myself doing it.

Sound like my mom and brother, they get so dark.  I don't get nearly as dark as they do.  Everytime we go to Miami, PR or Panama, my mom looks like a completely different person.  They always give here a second look in immigration.  I always tell her im surprised she doesn't have cancer cause she lays out in the sun all the time.

I tell her she's going to end up like Dixie Wetsworth if she continues this.

She's like I've been laying out in the sun, since I could walk, I'm not worried.
