Jacob Riis documented life in the tenements in NYC (he is cited several times in a book I own entitled "The American City, what works, what doesn't by Alexander Garvin).

For a complete understanding the roots of our suburbanization and our urban form today, One must look back to how conditions where in Riis' time..Interesting Read

great classic book, i have my own copy which i fittingly bought at the lower east side tenement museum.

beside the text, the most amazing photos inside are those taken by surprise flash photography in the alleyways of the old "five points" nabe of downtown manhattan. that is, amazing the photographer survived!

the area was cleared out for gov buildings and today is foley square/chinatown.
