good idea for a thread.

my spouse says if you are casting nets out there to make sure you put up your profile on linkedin and invite key people you meet to join, its big in ny and elsewhere for publishing/tech/media if you are into that stuff:

https://www.linkedin.com

linkedin has been 100% worthless for me in cleveland

I get the vibe that the site is 98% recruiters, 2% actual people

  • Just as an update / thank you:   I shared the story of my friend Cam with you all a little over a month ago. This morning, he packed his car in Texas and began 21 hour journey to Cleveland.

  • Book him a flight to London so he can go kick his bum of a dad's ass.

Hey everyone, I've been looking for a Fall 2007 internship through career services at Cleveland State, so I figured why not post something on here and see if anyone had any leads for me.

I'm looking for a full time internship this fall, although I'd settle for a part time if that's all I can find.

I have my undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Dayton (May 06'), and I will be graduating with my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Cleveland State University this December 07'.  Currently my GPA is 3.51 and I will be taking my final two classes on Monday & Wednesday evenings this fall.  Also, I have held executive positions in both student government and my fraternity.

If anyone in the Cleveland business world has any leads for me, please let me know.

Thanks.

maybe the world is your oyster, but ideally what field/type of firm would you end up at?

I might have one for you. Let me check with the fiscal manager in our department first.

If someone is interested in a 20-hr per week (some chance that it could go full time) intro-level planning position, PM me.

I'd be interested in any sort of banking/financial services/marketing/HR/anything business haha.  You'd think say Key or National City would have a bunch of internships available.. but they don't.. at least on their website.. which is where EVERY company directs you these days..

KS9214 thats not true, we don't put all internships online.

I sugget you call the general Human Resources line for Key, NCB, BOA, Huntington, Charter One, Sherwin Williiams, IMG

I've e-mailed all of directors of HR directly via our career services contact PLUS Progressive, Amtrust, Eaton, etc and nothing..

Pick up the phone.  If you really want a internship/job.  Make it happen.  Don't say you sent one email then call it a day.

Pick up the damn phone and call their office, you'll probably get an assistant, tell them you want to come in for an informational interview - even if they say, they have nothing available.  Be creative.

You how ambitious, creative and confident you are!

i have legitimate contacts in the HR world of cleveland......it will cost you though..........

Call 'em! Put yourself out there  :-D

Haha I have called several HR departments.. but I draw the line at stalking.. don't get me wrong, I have had several interviews.. I'm simply putting this message out to see if anyone at their specific organization has heard of/has seen an internship.  I don't need career search advice, thanks for the tips though.

Talked to the Fiscal Manager - no dice on the GA/Internship.

They are actually going to (eventually) create a staff position to help her... again, eventually.

Sorry.

Anyone want to help a brother out?

Anyone want to help a brother out?

how are your actuarial skills?

Novice, at best.

Hey all!

This is Steve. I've been on this site for years (although the post count may not confirm that  :-o) and love reading about what's going on. I'm getting ready to graduate from school (BA in Geography) and am looking for a job...problem is, I'm not sure where to look. Any ideas? Any entertaining anecdotes to share about your first post-graduation job? Let's hear 'em!

Thanks a bunch!

Steve

What field are you interested in, teebtong?

Every government structure employs people who are knowledgeable with GIS.  I'm assuming that since your degree is in Geography that you are well versed in this program.

At the local government level (cities, towns, etc) you can find a position for this skill within the Planning and/or Public Works Departments.  Sometimes neither one of these will have the position, but the position still exists most likely though in the IT Department (this is unusual and somewhat confusing in terms of functionality though).

You could also look at Metropolitan Planning Organizations (more commonly known as MPO's).  An example of this would be OKI Regional Council of Governments for the Cincinnati Metropolitan region.  They too do a great deal of work with GIS and you will find an organization like this for every metropolitan region in the country.

To my knowledge, there aren't a whole lot of opportunities for this skill in the private sector.  However you could do freelance consulting work with this skill.  Law firms, architecture, urban design, etc will need this type of expertise from time to time.  If you market you talent appropriately and become networked I would imagine that you could make a living going this route.

Hopefully this is helpful...and good luck!

The City of Mason, Ohio is looking for a GIS person at the moment.

You and me both, my friend.

Hello everyone,

I just moved to Cleveland from Columbus, my wife started graduate school at Cleveland State in August and I will be starting at Case on an MBA (part-time) in January.  I have 2 years of experience as a loan officer in Cbus, and I am looking to get an entry level position in financial analysis/financial planning.  I will be focusing my MBA coursework on finance.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

^start calling the banks?

As someone who is also in the part time MBA program at Case, I suggest the career development office there - pretty good from what I've heard.

If anyone is looking to break into the field of community development here in Cleveland, I am looking for a few Americorp VISTAs.  Feel free to send me a private message for more information.

Alright... so here's the deal. I'm looking for a flexible part-time job in Cincinnati that I can work around my school schedule. I DO NOT want to work in food service... I'm looking for a position with possible advancement opportunities and decent pay.

If anyone has any leads, they would be most appreciated.

At the airport we have people called PSA's (Public Safety Assistant).  They stand out in front of the terminals and make sure people don't leave their cars unattended and also inspect shipments to the concourses.  It's considered part time work with no benefits but you are able to work as many hours as you want.  I think the pay is $11.00 an hour.  Might be an option....

I know there's always talk of how there are plenty of jobs out there while at the same time hearing people can't find work... In an attmept to link those people I'm making this post...

I just heard from an old friend that I used to work with (who now works for a local GC) that they are looking to fill a position.  Position available is for a Project Coordinator.  A degree in design, construction technology, or architecture, is preferred (possibly even required).  Knowing how to read prints and knowing construction terminology is essential.  Obviously not really knowing anyone here I can't be making reccomendations... But if you are interested PM me and I can give you the contact info.

The company is the Crowley Group, and they are located right on Shaker Square in the old Joseph Beth Bookstore...

This was linked in another post. I am not sure that this is the right place for it but as a resident of Lakewood I would love to see some like-minded UrbanOhio'er in this position. I would apply but unfortunately strong opinions and having urban planners friends doesn't quite match what they are looking for.

Candidate will be familiar with the municipal planning process (including its boards and commissions), and adept at securing external funding for new initiatives. We seek experience in real estate financial feasibility analysis and a working knowledge of public and private funding sources and programs for economic development.

Applicant must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, organizational capabilities and strong computer knowledge. Must be self-motivated and able to work well with the public, City officials and staff. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.
