Are there any other openings? I don't think I'm qualified to be a police officer. I want something part time--weekends and a few weekday evenings. I guess the best thing I can do is go to their website.

If anyone is looking to gain some real estate development/community development experience in Cleveland, please PM me.  Or pass it along if you know someone who might be interested.

---

If you or someone you know if looking to break into the nonprofit and community development fields, build networks, cultivate professional skills, and be involved in meaningful work assisting disadvantaged persons, Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc., the community development corporation serving the Central, Kinsman, and Garden Valley neighborhoods of Cleveland, has the opportunity for you!

We're bringing an Americorps VISTA member on board for a one-year period beginning in November 2008. Our VISTA member will assist BBC's real estate development staff on a variety of projects in the areas of real estate development, home repair assistance for low-income families, economic development, and others.

Compensation is approximately $865/month. Free medical benefits are included with service. An educational award in the amount of $4,725 or $1,200 cash stipend are available upon completion of service.

Where is the person, name escapes me now, who was complaining a few days ago about Cleveland job opportunities???

This is a "paid volunteer" position.  Did you see the rate of compensation?  Also, VISTA volunteers are not allowed to work additional jobs while being a volunteer.

nope.  didn't read a thing.   lo siento!

There was a time I would have been THRILLED to get $800 a month.  That, yearly, is more than double what I made my first year post-college.

How much was a head of lettuce back in those days?

I have no idea, why?

I have no idea, why?

X is trying to call you an "old timer"!  he he he he

ah.  so old I didn't even get the joke.

That would be my earnings for 1992 I'm talking about.  I guess that does make me old, but it's not like it was 1972.

I have no idea, why?

X is trying to call you an "old timer"! he he he he

Well, sort of , but mostly I was just trying to point out the effects of inflation.

This is a "paid volunteer" position.

It is, and "VISTA" actually stands for Volunteers in Service to America.  The benefit of the program is that someone coming out of school that is having difficulty finding employment or is seeking a career change can get a solid year of experience.

The program compensates at the poverty level so that VISTA members can experience how many of the low-income persons to which they provide assistance during their tenure.

Hey everyone.  I don't know if this is interesting to anyone on the board or peeps you know, but I know a professional freelance photographer who does work for some pretty big local companies who is looking for an assistant.  She's not into placing some kind of formal ad, is just looking to network through people and find the right person when they crop up.

What I know:

Her studio is in Little Italy.

The position's hours are not set and would be during the day on weekdays, sounds like part time work.

She is looking for someone who has a an outgoing personality and familiarity with some type of arts and creative work.  Also needed is someone who is very organized and not above doing some admin type work such as returning phone calls and scheduling appointments or following up on leads for work, probably some bookkeeping.

May or may not involve accompanying her to shoots to act as an assistant, that wasn't clear from what she described.

I think this would be great if someone worked nights or didn't work and was looking for a chance to do a PT internship type position for a local, well-connected photographer.

If you're interested, PM me.

I don't know specifics but I understand there are position available in Cleveland.

Hey all,

A friend of mine is very interested in interning here at a local hospital. He loves the program and likes the city as well. He would be moving from New York City.

His main concern though is the job market for his wife. She is an Architect.

Anyone have any idea on the job market in Cleveland for Architects?

Thanks

(If this is not the proper forum for this post, I apologize.)

^I'd assume that it is not great at the moment. No one is building anything in this country. I'm sure some of the architects on UO could paint you a more accurate picture.

I think your friend's wife would be better off staying wherever she currently still has a job. Sooo many people are getting laid off and no one is hiring. It's terrible climate for architects, planners, developers, realtors and practically anyone in a related field. Pick your city - the job market will still suck.

cd-cleveland (or anyone else in the know) - do you have any idea if those jobs you posted here on 3/6 are still available?

CorySnyder - I'd guess that they would be filled, but I haven't heard and have no idea.  You might want to call down to Community Development, 664-4000 and ask about the positions.  Who knows what you'll find!

Community development jobs are popping up every day in many cities.  It's not really my area of interest, but I do have a solid educational background on this.  I wonder if I'm just going to have to push myself to apply.

As some of you know, I'm hoping to start grad school in Cincinnati next year. However, I'm also starting to think about my Plan B in case grad school doesn't happen. I've been unhappy in NYC for a while now, and I find that I'm becoming increasingly unhappy with my current job.

I know this is a long shot given the current state of the economy, and at this point I'm not ready to do anything except test the waters, but if anybody knows of any architecture or interior design firms in/near Cincinnati with open positions, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Depending on how things work out with my grad school plans, I may start looking more seriously in the spring.

Thread cleaned of the NYC apartment conversation. This thread really is just for job networking.

  • 2 weeks later...

If there already is a similar thread, then I apologize--and please delete, then. But, I thought it would be interesting to have a thread, especially in tough times, that allows UO'ers or anyone else to share a useful trade, profession, skill, or any service that may be useful to the community--here.

Maybe such a skilled person will offer quality services at a fair price, or maybe there are people who can refer a quality service or service person--as word of mouth is the best advertising. For example anyone need a good decorator, lawyer, painter, seamstress, carpenter, accountant, mechanic, carpet cleaner, web site designer, narrator, or whatever the skill....  Share her and maybe it could help generate some business for that person.

I really cannot think of a good title for the thread...But again, if there is such a thing...  Sorry for the post.. If not..then tell about what you can do...and maybe there is someone out here who needs the service of knows of someone who does.

I think they're 2 different threads.  The employment thread was for people to post jobs they knew about, actual job openings.  I think EC's idea should be a separate thread more of a listing of people's experience, skills, hobbies, knowledge, what have you?  That might be good, then you could PM someone if you had a specific question about something in their area?

Oh JOhio that is awful.  However, the news about Ohio State sounds promising, though I don't know what MCRP is?  Would it be a paid internship?

Was laid off yesterday. Pretty rough when you can't even get part-time hours at a grocery store.

On the bright side I was accepted in Ohio State's MCRP program and am meeting with someone from MORPC about a blind resume I sent out for a possible internship.

Sorry to hear about it. Something better will present itself.

thx for the explanation, I learned my something new today. Does this mean I can go home now? :)
