This might seem like a weird place to put this, since it's not an urban planning related job, but I think a lot of the people on here may have contacts with local restaurants and clubs, so I am making an offer for anyone who can help me out.  I've been on the road with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as their female vocalist, and a few of you may remember me from the Midnight Martini Show.  Anyway, I am going to be leaving the road and returning home in May and looking for gigs.  Specifically I'd like to get some regular or semi-regular nights to sing at a nice club or restaurant that would enjoy some nice jazz standards and so on.  Anyone who can get me in the door for even a one-time gig at anyplace, I will pay a referral fee of $25.  (I do reserve the right to turn down any gig that I don't feel is worth it, if it's too far away or doesn't pay enough for me to at least hire a pianist, etc.)  If you are interested in helping me book more than one or two gigs and would like to be my "agent" we can discuss that too.

Anyway, here's my website info, if you feel you know any places that would be interested in having me, please get in touch, thanks!

  • Just as an update / thank you:   I shared the story of my friend Cam with you all a little over a month ago. This morning, he packed his car in Texas and began 21 hour journey to Cleveland.

There's supposed to be a jazz place opening up in the old Prime Ribs Steakhouse (House of Cues) space in the Warehouse District.  I'd also check out the new place coming to East 4th St, Society Lounge, which will be opening shortly, or the Velvet Tango Room.

you should send your CD to these two radio shows based in New York:

1) http://www.wnyc.org/shows/jonathan-schwartz/about/ hosted by Jonathan Schwartz. He's the son of legendary Broadway composer Arthur Schwartz. Although he can be a long-winded pain to listen to (always name-dropping--e.g."my good friend Carly Simon"), he occasionally plays music from new talent

and

2) http://www.oldisnew.org/ hosted by David Kenny, another source for new talent in this genre.

You never know!

^ Everybody is trying to ride Carly Simon's coattails these days.

There is also Paddy Rock Superpub at Kamm's Corners. Don't let the name fool you -- they host all sorts of musical acts. See my article at:

Yeah, I've actually added all these places to my list of clubs to contact, but I have never once gotten a gig from cold calling, emailing or sending demos.  Everything I've ever gotten was through being recommended by someone who knew the booker.  Places tend to book the people they already know.  So if anybody knows who does the booking at any of these places and can recommend me to that person, it makes it much more likely they might actually look at my stuff and call me back...

I remember applying for one of the manager jobs when I saw how well they paid, when Aldi came to middleburg heights. I didn't even get an interview. I'm sure competition for jobs like that must be very fierce.

And Aldi's not open late at night so you won't find yourself going into work at 11PM.

Hi all. Circumstances beyond my control and all, I am looking for a new job. It needs to be writing/communications. I don't do graphic design, autocad, trade shows, media buying. I'm a content producer and a damned good one. Whatever you are selling, in whatever forum in print or online, I can write about it. Please let me know of any leads you find.

What's wrong with trade shows? They're fun. Not giving you a hard time. Is it the crappy hours?

I can't take any job involving travel. I have a small child, am a single parent with a firm custody schedule and an inflexible ex.

What's wrong with trade shows? They're fun.

Noting that R&R already answered, they're not for everyone by any stretch.

A friend of mine worked at a tech company known for being really innovative.  They did a lot of trade shows, but getting any member of the small team that was responsible for 90% of their breakout stuff to work the booths was like getting Dr. House to do clinic hours.

LOL good analogy.

I actually did enjoy some of the travel component at my old job before I had my kid. I really, really hate flying more than just about anyone on earth, but I like actually going to different places. But once I had the kid, yeah, I just don't want to be away from him. And now that I only see him half of his life, taking any more of that time away because of work is 100% unacceptable for me.

Having a daughter whose mom is often ill, I can relate to that one.  I didn't mind the flying itself as much as the airports, and the idea of taking up a whole day for a two hour meeting.

Would any of you guys happen to be Software Engineers or in IT in general?  I'm attending a coding school in Downtown Cleveland. I've been so busy studying and writing programs, I forgot I'll have to be looking for a job as a Jr. Developer in a couple months. They have employers that come in, talk to students and interview them and the field is certainly in extremely high demand so I'm not too concerned about it but I'd appreciate any leads, especially if the leads happen to be companies located downtown. Downtown Cleveland is really growing on me after going down there everyday for school :)

Try signing up with The Creative Group maybe? They may be able to get you some gigs and something could end up being temp to perm.

Ugh. I hate temp agencies. I'm 29 years old. I need stability in my life, lol. If I need a job quickly, I'd definitely check it out though. Thanks for the lead.

There's this company called DakotaSoft that recruits students from my school and they're located downtown. I'm wondering if there's other big software companies nearby.

Also, I hope it's okay to do a sort of shameless plug for my school. I know this is a career networking thread but if you're unemployed, unhappy with or stuck in a dead-end job and have an interest in Computer Progamming, the Coding Bootcamp I go to, "WeCanCodeIT" is AMAZING. They do job placement and have a lot of connections with employers. They're legally not allowed to guarantee you a job but 20% of students get recruited before they even graduate and almost 100% have jobs right after graduating.

It's $10k but they find grants and loans for you. They found $7k in grants for me ($6k through OhioMeansJobs for gaining skills that Cuyahoga Co. needs and $1k for me making less than $40k which is easy when you're living off of unemployment, ha!) There's grants out there for everyone and they'll find them for you.

They're really changing the face of IT. My first day, I was blown away, seeing that I'm one of 3 white guys in my class. It's just incredibly diverse and it's fun being in a diverse cohort. The majority of my classmates are women. More than half are African-American or Latino. My classmates come from all walks of life and I mean ALL.

If you do the full-time bootcamp, you're in class every weekday w/ 20 hrs a week of homework and after only 3 months you have a portfolio of programs you've designed along with a Certificate of Software Engineering and have all the skills you need to be a developer. From what I'm hearing from graduates, the starting salary is $45-$60k a year. The way you learn here is unconventional; you retain so much more information in a short period of time. It sounds really intimidating and people think they can't do it but literally anyone can do it. I never even took pre-cal in High School and I'm doing just fine in the program. There's not that much math involved and it's so much fun making your own apps. If you're thinking about changing careers, I highly recommend these Coding Bootcamps. There's probably 15-20 of them that popped up all around the country and I feel very lucky that one popped up in Cleveland, especially one that actually has good intentions and above all else, has a mission of empowering people and changing lives. This is probably the best life decision I've ever made and my classmates feel the same way.

Plus, since it's in Terminal Tower, the Rapid literally pulls right into the building where our classrooms are.  It doesn't get any more convenient than that! I wish these schools existed 10 years ago; I wouldn't have wasted so much money on a university.

If anyone wants any more information about the program, PM me.

A lot of TCGs work can be temp to perm though. Many companies use it as a way to test out employees before making a big investment into hiring them. I mean, I know what you mean, but there isn't a lot of stability out here in the real world even if you have a regular job, and it could help you make some connections and at least start getting paid work until you land something FT. I got a very good FT job out of a temp agency when I was around your age.

I interviewed with an interesting software company a few months ago, for a marketing position I didn't get. Seems like a good company though, rapidly growing: www.onshift.com

Stability's a beautiful thing but I had a two and a half year gig at KeyBank via an agency - mind you, not all agencies are the same. The agency that placed me specialized in creative/tech placements and they offered medical/dental/vision/401K/etc. - I can't speak for the Creative Group but it couldn't hurt. Also, check your messages :-)

My sister got a temp job in accounting at WKYC in Cleveland and she ended up working there for 10+ years until the Great Recession hit. She worked several short-term temp jobs before that, but as with dating, if you keep kissing frogs sooner or later you'll get a prince.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I certainly would echo the temp to hire sentiments.  I'm a software engineer and our company also does temp to hire to make sure the individual is capable (or willing to learn) and fits in with the department.  I found my current job by going through a placement agency (Robert Half) who took inventory of my skills and my requirements to work in Downtown Cincinnati to get me in this gig.

Honestly, I was sold right away but with you being a Software Engineer and taking the time to validate those sentiments, it makes me feel confident in going that route if I need to. Right now I'm working on a fairly basic personal website with my portfolio and I'm filling out my LinkedIn page. A lot of recruiters come to my school, but of course there's never any guarantee and I shouldn't expect to find a job as a Jr. Dev right away. If I don't get a job in 5 weeks when I graduate, I'm definitely going that route! After you mentioned Robert Half, I started to hear that name a lot and it seems like a very reputable agency.

I have another question!

I'd REALLY appreciate ANY input in terms of career advice for my girlfriend.

She's from here and goes to CSU. She's majoring in marketing. She's been working at restaurants, while in school, since she was 16. She's been working at the Cheesecake Factory for over a year and while the pay is good, they're giving her way more shifts than she can handle being in school F/T and she said the politics of who gets the best sections is corrupted by another server getting to make the schedule (and who gets the best sections, believe it or not, is based on who is willing to babysit the schedule-maker's kids.) She doesn't feel appreciated there. She just put in a two week notice.

Since she has a bunch of money saved up, I've been encouraging her to go ahead and look for the kind of job she is passionate about, despite still being in school. She gets all As, but it would make her even more excited about her marketing classes and I think I could convince her to even take on an unpaid internship. She majored in marketing because she is a huge promoter of all things Cleveland and she wants to work for an organization that has that sort of mission. Are you guys aware of any organizations like this? I know in Columbus, they have "Experience Columbus" but I'm not sure what the equivalent is, here. She and I both haven't really had time to look into this. Although much more profit-oriented, I think she could actually accomplish that goal by working for a real estate developer. Hell, even a magazine. She's a really good writer and speaker. Any ideas?

Magazines are cutting staff, not adding it from what I hear. But if she will take an unpaid internship there could be more options. Has she talked to Destination Cleveland or whatever the tourism board is calling itself these days? Ask a librarian to pull a Crain's and find out who the head of marketing is at all the best and biggest companies and send her resume there. Network on linked in. Contact the ad agencies and PR firms in town and ask if they have internships available.

^Thing is, if you want to be in marketing you have to be on top of the kinds of things you're talking about before applying. So David's girlfriend needs to master that stuff now.

Sorry in advance, for another "David" post that prattles on :) The irony is that when I'm talking instead of writing, I'm far too succinct.

Wasn't there a LinkedIn thread on here? I could have sworn there was but it didn't come up in the search bar. I wasn't sure if I should make a separate LinkedIn thread but then I realized that I should put it here in the insanely valuable, very popular Career Networking Thread to prove the following point on why I think we should all be part of an UO LinkedIn group.

I am correct in realizing there isn't one, right? Nothing popped up on LinkedIn when I searched.

Think about it. UrbanOhio is a really powerful website. What ColDayMan and RichNCincy ultimately created as a side project to bring like-minded folks together, is pretty incredible. There's a LOT of resources on here from a lot of successful, skillfulll, intelligent, lovely people who happen to enjoy helping other UOers when they can. There's a lot of camaraderie here and it really shows at the meetups, so why not extend that to LinkedIn to help each other out even more?

I wouldn't mind starting an UrbanOhio group on LinkedIn and doing whatever work is involved, including reaching out to members of this site to join it) and if I were too busy to handle it, I'd pass the torch (although I don't think groups require much maintenance) but since I'm not an Admin or even a Mod on here, I'm not sure if anyone would feel that it is my place to represent UO on LinkedIn.

I can think of a lot of benefits this sort of group would have for myself and others:

*Group would have a list of members which makes it easy to connect with other UO members since you can't search for them based on their UO handle.

*If you're like me and going into a new industry or new to LinkedIn in general, already having a group in common where you somewhat know the person makes you more comfortable in reaching out to them when you're asking them for advice or leads in career opportunities, trying to do business with them, or even recruiting. Or in my case specifically, probably also for looking to offer free work just to get skills validation to make my own page look better.

*The more connections you have on LinkedIn, the fewer degrees of separation between you and a person you maybe  trying to connect with or someone who may be thinking about connecting with you for a reason that may benefit you. There seems to be a higher degree of trust that comes with less degrees of separation.

There's many more but I'm tired of typing and those are the most important ones that I can think of.

I've gotten an interview before from this thread. How has it been for others?

I don't have a LinkedIn profile due to the nature of my business though. There would be a lot more people wanting to talk to me than I would need to network with (I don't mean UO users).
