The Woolworth Building is now the House of Blues, so unless there's a space on the East 4th side by the HOB restaurant, I don't know where they'd put anything there.

My guess for the Graves Building - everything I've read is that it's "near the southeast corner of East 4th and Prospect", which we all know is a parking lot as is the southwestern corner. So, my best guess is that the building in question is the brown building with bay windows that's just behind the Sincere Building in this photo:

graves is next to sincere building on east side of e4.  it has the newly boarded up front.

woolworth, is on the west side of e4, next to the HOB restuarant entrance.  it is a yellow brick building with no upstairs windows iirc.  there is a display in the street level windows with local art.

What the heck - a before and after of the W.T. Grant Building :-)

save the facade of one building, ruin the facade of another for the last 4 years.

^huh?

I guess it took me a minute to realize that Theresa's & Bang & Clatter were going into the same building.  How's that going to work out?

It's still such a shame that only part of the WT Grant Building still exists.  The restoration work they did is amazing, but it would be so much nicer with the rest of the building intact!

Do you mean the rest of the building as far as the storefront?  Otherwise it is pretty amazing the before and after, especially the top..

Hmmm...I was thinking that the building was about double its current width and that part of it was cut out, but now I can't really find much to support that!  Maybe it's just that the top floors of the building next to it were lopped off...  who can help clarify?

These are each from Cleveland Memory:

OK, you know that one-story extension from the WT Grant Lofts, next to the Jimmie Johns? That's where Theresa's is going. The theater is going in the ground floor of the ornate brick building shown by MayDay above (the old Cole's Shoes). For some reason, the two buildings are referred to collectively as WT Grant. I don't know why.

^huh?

we've partially restored W.T. Grant, but we've lost union terminal's facade for the last four years (or however long its been)

Anything new here? I remember a place called Wonder Bar and perhaps a burrito joint were mentioned previously. Any truth to these rumblings? I'd <3 a burrito place.

There was this, from the Free Times' Bites column last week:

Imagine making your way down East Fourth Street, turning into a narrow, winding alleyway, ultimately arriving in a lively Mexican town square. According to Michael Auger, managing partner of Trifecta Management, the California-based outfit that brought us the Corner Alley, diners coming to Zocalo Mexican Grill can expect such an experience. "People will walk through a set of gates and down a 40- to 50-foot alley that slowly takes them from downtown Cleveland to a little slice of Mexico," Auger explained during a call from California. Shooting for a Cinco de Mayo opening, Zocalo will be the first of its kind in the nation, and the first Mexican restaurant in the immediate area. "Mexican food is one of the fastest growing ethnic cuisines across the US," Auger added, "and the Mexican spirit of people celebrating and having fun falls right in place with what East Fourth Street is all about." At 4,500 square feet on two levels, the multi-zoned restaurant will seat about 180. The kitchen and main dining room will be located on the main level, and the bar and cantina will be upstairs. Auger described the atmosphere as evoking the color and feeling of a Mexican coastal resort, like Cabo San Lucas, "with no level of swanky formality." Diners can expect fresh-made tortillas, guacamole made table-side and mesquite-grilled meats and seafood. Prices for most dinner entrees will be $8-$16. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week, while a walk-up window will serve a limited menu for daytime and late-night take-out.

if anyone really cares, the space between the WT Grant Entrance and Jimmy John's brought down the Construction Sub wall.

You can see inside, and workers are busy with what appears finishing up drywall and such. Nice new windows and such also.

Is this where Therea's Pizza will go?

"Shooting for a Cinco de Mayo opening,..."

Sorry, I don't read Mexican ;)

Theresa's pizza and The Bang and Clatter Theater are both supposed to go into the W.T.Grant building.

Imagine making your way down East Fourth Street, turning into a narrow, winding alleyway, ultimately arriving in a lively Mexican town square.

I can't picture where this will be.  What alley?  The area where the valet is?

^^The space pope is talking about is the Theresa's. Bang & Clatter will be in the brick building pictured on the previous page of this thread.

Oompa, I think the "alley" is going to be inside the restaurant... That is my interpretation anyway.

Meanwhile, Wonder Bar wants to open in May. Probably optimistic, but they're working hard on it. (This is the building on E. 4th with the round window on the ground floor.)

^have they begun construction?

Zocalo sounds really cool. I love the idea of a inner courtyard. Those spaces were super cool at Ingenuity.

This street is looks better everyday I walk past it.  I believe the quick rundown for the new openings by hopefully the end of May/June:

Zocalo

Theresa's Pizza?

Wonder Bar

I'm highly impressed with Trifecta.  They are quality and face-paced.  They seem to stick to their word about timelines, and are damn creative (Corner Alley, Flannery's Pub revamping, Zocalo...).

Next question about East 4th:   What's the timeline for the opening of Terry Tarantino's La Strada World Cafe on the NW corner?

go ask him.

Yeah I think Trifecta has done a nice job with things, along with the fact that these concepts basically originated in Cleveland.  The only thing that I wouldnt want to see is these places located in every city, which ultimately they do want to do (well maybe not every city).

What makes Cleveland and E. 4th so unique is that there are so many "one of a kind, great concepts, that when I bring out of towners in, they always say "Ive never seen anything like this" or "DC has nothing like this" etc...

I always look forward to the progress that has been made for each visit home that I make, and Im certainly as impatient as anybody to see these things finished...........

go ask him.

That's funny. I thought that right after I posted that I probably see him more than most people on here.  I'll find out this weekend if he's around.

The alley entrance is a cool idea.  From the website, it sounds like the Cantina will be open on the main facade, with the restaurant and a take out window open on a small pedestrian alley on the south side of the building.

I got the East 4th St. newsletter yesterday, and it talks about all these new businesses coming.  The only new info to this board though is that La Strada will also have a walk up window.  Cool!  As for openings, they are all scheduled to open in "May" or "this spring".

i was roaming around E. 4th today in search of this ever elusive Zocala alley and i believe i found it. its right behind the building on the SE corner of E. 4th and Prospect. its the only "alley" on E. 4th.

I ate a Flannery's pub for dinner (after an amazing acrobats show in Playhouse Square).  You are correct about the location alley way...it just looks so narrow though, doesn't it?  I was trying to visualize the flow of traffic where it seems it can only handle 4-5 wide at most.  Either way, I'm sure it will make for a great atmosphere.

Do you mean north east corner?  Is it on the E.4th side or the Prospect side?

E. 4th. across the street(E 4th)  from flannery's lookin northeast

I wonder if they have thought of putting any stores like a dry cleaner, drug store, stationery store, a bakery, etc on or near East 4th.  without visiting the area during a normal business day it seems like they could use a store like that.

I think that they are trying to have a large mix of entertainment options. They have been pretty successful. I'd like to see the retail options nearby, though.

Isn't the plan to have the entertainment spill onto Euclid and wrap around towards Public Square? I'd think the kind of retail you're talking about could be created on prospect.. aren't there like 2 hat and or wig shops within steps from e 4th on prospect? Highest and best use?

Map Boy, if you haven't had your question answered, you were correct.  The building was a little over twice its current size, which must also be why both buildings are now named W.T. Grant.  Check out this picture of Euclid Ave. from 1920 as proof: (taken from Cleveland Memory)

Cool picture.. With the ECP construction you can see the old trolley tracks exposed briefly at points until they rip them up and toss them.

Got this in the mail the other day. Although it does nothing for me, figured what the hell someone might be interested..

That is interesting.

Not for me though. I'm not into the church. The whole opiate for the masses thing.

Do you/anyone know what religion is being sold here: catholic, protestant, etc?

Its probably some independent protestant sect. No way the catholic church would do this.

Yeah, I realized that right after I hit 'post.'

what about the big church headquarters around the corner on Prospect? I can't remember the name. The one with the Amistad Chapel on the ground floor.

This sound like something they might do.

The United Church of Christ? Maybe, but I think that they are a bit classier than that.

Its nice that we have probably the most liberal christian church in the country HQ'ed right here in Cleveland.

Could be unitarian?

^Bite your tongue! The Unitarians would never be involved in anything so tacky.

No, this is an evangelical church. (shudder) The guy who's starting it is currently involved in an evangelical church in North Olmsted. He and his wife moved to the Warehouse District for the express purpose of starting a ministry in downtown Cleveland. There's a Web site -- http://www.gatewaycleveland.com/

^You beat me to the website

It looks good.

They moved from the burbs to downtown and the website gives directions from public transportation.

about us ::

A little about our Pastor and his wife ::

Alex Ennes has served in several churches in Texas, Kentucky, and in his home state of Arkansas. He and his wife, Shari, have been living in Cleveland since 2004. He met his wife through eHarmony. No… they’re not on the commercials and they don’t have a desire to be on the commercials. Shari is from Westlake. So, guess who won on where they would live? Just kidding. Both Alex and Shari have a deep love for Cleveland and a desire to see the city thrive. This November, they moved into Bridgeview Apartments in the Warehouse District to begin to meet and serve the people who live downtown.

Launch Team

Jason and Carrie Brumbach are two of our launch team members who grew up in Cleveland and have a heart for the city. Jason and Carrie were married this last April. Jason works for Compuware in Independence.

They heard about what Gateway Church is doing, talked with Alex and Shari, and decided that they wanted to help launch Gateway Church. They have even taken the extraordinary step of putting their condominium in the suburbs up for sale so that they can move downtown!

Jason and Carrie are great examples of people who want to Love :: Live :: Serve. We are also searching for others who would help get Gateway Church launched. You may be asking if a person has to be a spiritual giant to be a part of the launch team? No. You simply must be willing to learn to Love God :: Live in Community :: Serve the City.

Good for them. I think people are getting sick of the whole church/temple/holy ground thing. What an excellent way to get people together in a venue that would likely never be used on a sunday morning.

So, is this competition for the Gospel Brunch Sunday's at HOB? :-)

competition, I would see this as a colloboration.  if the HOB is smart, they'll shuttle those "church folk" un into the Gospel Brunch, which is always packed.

I can assure you that since Gateway Church has no language along the lines of "Open and Affirming" (aka inclusive to the gay community), they are not affiliated with the United Church of Christ.

You win!

[Musky]

Thanks so much for contacting me.  I really appreciate the candor of just coming out and asking.  I wish this could be responded to in person since it certainly is an issue that is much more complex than what an email can provide.  But, since you asked, I'll do the best I can.

First of all, I really don't like labels.  I think it brings a whole lot of negativity into conversations.  I think it is a disservice to anyone to label them as something.  For instance, is a homosexual just simply that? In other words, are they more than just a homosexual?  Sure they are.  They laugh, love, cry, have jobs, etc.  I really think it is a disservice to someone just to label one part of their lives and say "This is who they are."  There is certainly more to them than just being gay.

You won't find us bashing anyone because of sexual preference, beliefs, political ideology, etc.  I tell everyone that grace means I love you no matter what.  Truth means I will be honest no matter what.

I do believe that God has asked us to be good stewards of our time, talent, and life.  This applies to the person who is gay and to the person who is what most people would say as "straight."  (I'm only using the labels here for conversation purposes).  I think the church needs to be the place that we rediscover sexuality in biblical ways.  There are things God expects of ALL of us regardless of our sexual preference.

That being said, I believe that sex was God's idea.  It is something God created between a man and wife in the context of marriage.  This is what we

promote and celebrate at Gateway.

Again, grace means loving you no matter what.  This means that [people] should never feel "judged" by anyone who is a regular attender of Gateway.

Truth means I'll be honest no matter what.  I think any good friendship is based upon those two values.  The last thing I want is someone who loves me with conditions attached and that they aren't honest with me.

I've tried to be as honest and forthright as I could.  The bottom line is that we exhibit grace to everyone "We love no matter what".  So, we would be classified as "gay friendly."  But, I would ask them just like I ask everyone else that we should aim for a life of purity, which is what God has asked us to do.  This includes those who are not gay.  They are not exempt from being pure in their sexual life.

Let me put it this on a personal level...Will a person feel like I am looking down upon them because they are gay, straight but living together, rich, poor, different race, political beliefs, etc.?  I've yet to EVER have a person say they felt that way...even when they knew I disagreed.  I would encourage your friend to come and get to know us and see for themselves.

I don't like having to respond to issues like this by email since someone can't judge tone in an email.  That is why I would sure appreciate...  [giving]... us a chance... one Sunday morning.  Then, [people] can find out in person rather than by email.  I would be disappointed if they say "No" to us based upon an email response rather than by experience.

If you or the other person has further questions, then feel free to email me.

Blessings,

Alex Ennes

Lead Pastor

Gateway Church

"I really think it is a disservice to someone just to label one part of their lives and say "This is who they are.""

So along those lines of thinking... how did he vote on Issue 1, I wonder.

"I believe that sex was God's idea.  It is something God created between a man and wife in the context of marriage.  This is what we promote and celebrate at Gateway."

Oh that's right - marriage = man and woman, and thus gays are left out of the equation entirely. Thanks, I'll pass.

That being said, I believe that sex was God's idea.  It is something God created between a man and wife in the context of marriage.  This is what we

promote and celebrate at Gateway.

Sounds like its some sort of straight religious swingers club.  :)

Well, if thats the case...

never mind
