Like you of all people would know, sheesh.

It's 5 o'clock, don't you have to be getting back to Hasidic Heights?

Oh man, awsome score with Saigon!  And local which makes it more awsome.  Hush, too, sounds like it could be pretty cool.

I guess it will be nice to have BlackFinn turn the corner onto Euclid even though another corporate formula bar is a little less exciting for me.  OK, a lot less exciting.

Any clue where the vietnamese rest. will go? How about the lola spin off?

The Vietnamese restaurant is going right by the E. 4th St. offices, in one or more of those really small storefronts.

Hush is going into the old Cort's store, right next to HOB.  This is the building with the lighted artwork in the display window right now.

Well it looks like Maron decided that 4th is simply a going to be an entertainment district with no real retail.  Maybe he could not sign up  anybody worthwhile or maybe the hope is for retail on Euclid and Prospect.

That has been the plan all along- for East 4th to be an entertainment district with "no real retail".

i never heard of blackfinn, but i see the manhattan one is located along the irish riveria so no wonder. irish bars are a dime a dozen over there. i may have even been in there before on a st pats day, but who would know they are all alike.

i'm sure it'll be solid, if corporate:

the viet restaurant is excellent idea, you can never have enough viet chow, it's all tasty. and the lola club will certainly be a fun classy spot. roof deck?

this is all very exciting news to hear how maron has carefully guided the ongoing development on e4th.

From the Flats to the Warehouse District, past Tower City and East fourth down to the CSU College town, Cleveland's core seems to be brightening up with things to do and places to be. If we get some retail on Euclid and Prospect between Ontario and East 14th, we may actually have a continuous and vibrant scene of people just out walking/shopping/touring From The Cuyahoga to CSU.

i sure hope this doesnt oversaturate the area with just primarily dining. i wouldve liked to see something like a new york style deli, maybe a corner store type place where you could pick up all your essentials. someplace where you could buy a six pack and a bag of chips, bar of soap, etc. this BlackFinn place sounds pretty similar to Flannery's. i'd like to know what some of the 150 other proposals/offers were. i also wonder why it takes them so long to construct anything over there. i work in the construction industry and cant see why all their projects drag on for so long unless the Maron's are such perfectionists that they build something, dont like how it looks tear it down and do over, change order stuff...i dont know

It's not as if the neighborhood is missing these things, though.  Jake's is right around the corner- NY-style deli, check.  CVS is about a 5 minute walk- neighborhood corner store where one can get essentials, check.  I know that people are dissappointed that East 4th didn't get ______, but this is exactly what Maron has been promising all along- a destination entertainment district.  So it seems like beating a dead horse to complain every time something is announce that it is just restaurants/bars/clubs.

That is great news about the Vietmanese rest. Does anyone know if they owner is local? I ask b/c the owner of my favorite pho soup shop (Superior Pho) once told me he wanted to expand . that would be a perfect location, maybe even better than the oc spot he had his eye on a few years ago. Many DT and CSU  workers have to get in the car to go to the 3030 superior location. I know this is the wrong thread but does anyone know where the thread is for the condo conversion next to tower city on public square is?

there are two thread on the Park Building.  One in developments and one in the photo thread.  I love that project.

That is great news about the Vietmanese rest. Does anyone know if they owner is local?

Yes, it is locally-owned.

It will be owned and operated by the guys that do #1 Pho on Superior.

  • 5 weeks later...

check it!  (sorry, taken by cell phone)

Awesome.  Really looking forward to grab a drink at this place.  One of the coolest buildings in the city in my opinion.

Lola's has some patio furniture out, but didn't appear to be seating out there yet.

When do they expect to open?

Lola's patio, or Wonder Bar?  Lola's should be anytime now, somewhere within the next month for Wonder Bar, I would guess.  But that's just a guess.

What is going on with Teresa's Pizza on Euclid?  Construction appeared to halt several months ago.  I noticed this morning there were pizza sauce boxes in there - but there still is plenty of drywalling to do.  Actually, no one was even there working on it.

Just curious if anyone heard what has caused the delay and if it still plans on moving forward.

it was weird, about a week ago, it looked like they were moving kitchen equipment (fridges maybe?) out of the facility.

There seemed be people going in and out more frequently about 1-2 weeks ago.  Can't say that I've seen any progress though.

For the record, the original Teresa's Pizza in Maple Heights is the best pizza I've ever had (followed in order by Angelo's in Lakewood, Farinacci's in Northfield Center, and Valentino's on Murray Hill Rd).  None of the (Teresa's) franchises seem to be nearly as good.

wonder bar looks very nice. much nicer than the old ny east village wonder bar that is for sure lol! not as cute as the o.g. wonder bar in asbury park, nj tho:

That's awesome and I would be happy, no, honored to have such an establishment in my neighborhood.

We went to Erasure at House of Blues last night.  Parked at the garage on Prospect and East 6th.  What's going on with the street lights in that area?  The Marriott Residence Inn is right there, Colonial Arcade, and Prospect meets with E 9th.  If I was a guest at the hotel I would be hesitant about even considering walking outside.  The lights are there, just not on!

Did you see my wife? I bought her tickets to the show. She said she was right in front by the stage. Pixie like look with short blond hair.

^are they the old lights? The Euclid Corridor Project is replacing all of the lights. I wouldn't be surprised if they simply cut the lights while construction is going on.

We were along the rail facing the stage on the first floor.  Great seats and I'm sure we saw her.  She was the one with her hands high in the air clapping, right?

It could be the construction issue but the lights look relatively new but with that design style so that they look like the old gas lights/lanterns

Shes says yes, that's probably why her arms hurt today.

it's been a long term problem on lower prospect and lower huron.   there are a lot of period pedestrian light replicas as well as standard street lights in this area.  a few years ago, they were all retrofitted with metal halide (white output) vs. the standard sodium vapor bulbs (orange glow).

however, for whatever reason, the wattage on the halide bulbs is less than the sodium vapor bulbs, the "natural" lighting isn't as effective in this area, and the fixtures are habitually burned out or inoperable.

it really can be very dark in a lot of sections, made more so by the abandoned storefronts surrounding the immediate area.

Are the lights CPP or First Energy if you know? If First Energy you should contact (Though I'll try to pass it along) the Area manager for Cleveland, who's name is Mike Smith (440)-717-5451, and let him know. Bug 'em just like the people in Solon and Geauga county do to their respective area managers all the time.

If CPP I guess you'll have to go the council person route, I'm not familiar with their contact structure.

I live on Prospect and I've called CPP numerous times about the poor quality of the street lights. Each time they just say the problems are a result of Euclid Corridor. I also wrote letters to Cimperman and the Historic Gateway Neighborhood. The neighborhood association told me they were working on the problem about a year ago, but no results to date.

Just last night Huron was completely dark until midnight.

Unbelievable!  That close to the ball park, the Gund, and a hotel right smack in the middle of it all!  If I were those business/park owners I would be ALL OVER somebody until the lights were shining like the sun!

Maybe it's an evil twisted plot to force you to use the valet services?

Question?  Has anyone tried to contact the powers that be over the last two days?  Has anyone gone and spoken with the owners/general managers of the businesses or contacted the media.  As noted this is a high visible neighborhood and there is power in numbers.

Can we put together a list of numbers so that the residents of this area like jmc8651 and X can lodge formal complaints.  I think we did this about a month ago when we had issues with graffiti.

it is like running into a wall though.  i've talked with the businesses in the area (flannerys, hotel).  they don't seem particularly motivated to start calling and making a scene.  there are also a lot of abandoned storefronts and surface parking lots in this stretch that don't have "advocates."

the only real success i've had was about a year ago, after weekly calls to CPP, councilman's office, historic gateway - and getting the same "we're working on it, but what can we really do?" response - i sent a few emails to the mayors action committee.  that seemed to do the trick (initially), but what is sad is that it can slip back so quickly.

Who at those business did you speak with?  Did you explain to them how those lights off affects the perception of their business and its location (there is that "perception" word again).

I don't mean to come down on you but go to the top at those businesses.

How many UOs live in the E 4 neighborhood or frequently visit it??

Here is an example where the power of urbanohio comes into play.

Urbanlife, do you have copies of your letter?  Post it here.  We can come up a) a set list of people to target and then b) each send "personalized" versions to a the powers at be via email.  In addition, we can copy those businesses in the area.  Those businesses have to learn to partner with the residents or they are not truly apart of the community.

There is power in numbers and more one way to skin a cat!

i spoke with the GMs/shift leads of these establishments.  They expressed the same frustration as we are here, but none of them seemed willing to push the issue further, except that they had expressed their displeasure that the lights didn't work to the city, historic gateway, etc. and that nothing had been done.

i'll look around for my email, although i don't think i have a saved copy of it this far out.

it basically went: "if cleveland can't even keep the lights on, can any one wonder why people doubt the city's ability to handle more challenging problems?  this is an easy, and very visible fix that affects everyone's perception of safety downtown and there is no excuse for street lights to be out for months at a time.  Otherwise, please take the inoperable light poles down and at least reduce the clutter on the street."

Any word on a Zocala opening yet? I'm dying to try that place out.

I haven't heard anything, but Wonder Bar had it's "friends and family" opening party tonight, and should be open any day now for the public.

X any pics?  :-D

Not completely sure.  Over the past 2 weeks they have been conducting interviews at the Holiday Inn at National City Center.  I would assume if they are just now interviewing, it will be a few weeks still until they are up and ready to open (training the staff, etc.)

Yeah, Wunder Bar hasn't started out on the right foot.  They advertised last night as the opening with complimentary drinks and food, yet when people I know showed up, they said it was a mistake and that it was friends and family night.  I saw the ad here on UO and on coolcleveland.com.  Not sure what the deal is.  Still though, looks like a cool spot.
