McC, is they any talk of a grocer going into the area?

Nope, none that I've heard. Honestly, I don't think there is a space with enough size around East 4th to support something like that.

You're probably right. And you have a good point about Constantino's and Reserve Square and CVS. But, still. I think a real, live grocery story would complete the neighborhood. There's a LOT of empty space inside, er, Colonial Plaza ( ?? the arcade with Quiznos in it), and those three retail spots at 551 Euclid could be merged to make a decent sized market, no?

Just a pipe dream.

I like your pipe dream :-D.  I'd ditch the Ohio City Dave's in a heartbeat for a larger grocery store downtown.

Amen, doc (and, thanks :)).

Not particularly, unless I have one of those "oh sh!t, I don't have any [insert product name here]".  I'm pretty picky about my grocery stores, and Reserve Square just doesn't do it for me.  Must've been the two years I lived in Shaker Heights.  Anywho, back to E. 4th!

There's a LOT of empty space inside, er, Colonial Plaza ( ?? the arcade with Quiznos in it)...

I meant Colonial Marketplace.

Well if that's what you are looking for... The Avenue Supermarket in Reserve Square is a giant full size grocery store... it has everything any major supermarket would have.  Like I said, there is space enough, if someone were interested in doing it, for a constantino's sized type place... but there just isn't a large enough space for another full blow grocery store.  If we see another one (trader joe's or the like) I do think it will be part of a larger plan, like starks... not on 4th.

I didn't know the Reserve Square store was so big.  I'll have to check that out... even though I'm in WHD, right now.

20,000 sf.

Trader Joes are not THAT big where they would need the space of a heinens or giant eagle.  Trader Joes can be condensed into vacant buildings nicely.  Ive seen aTrader Joes in Chicago and DC be put into modest sized areas.  You could also use two floors if they need it, which gives more of an urban look and feel.  Just my opinion

well keep dreaming if you like, but it's not going to happen.  The footprint of the Sincere Building is tiny, and what's available in the Windsor Building isn't enough either.  And there is no room for 2 stories in either of them because the space is occupied above.  Perhaps if someone could convince Goldberg (and Trader Joe's)... 515 might have the space if they combined the entire retail space of the garage... but I'd say it's doubtful.  If you really want a TJ, keep your finger's crossed for Stark, it's your best shot.

Not trying to ruin your dream, just stating that it's rather unlikely in this particular area.

CORRECTION:  There is one area something like this could happen IF that's the direction they choose to go, and that's 668.  Like I said they've thrown out some sort of convenience... I'm sure if they thought the market forces were aligned properly they could explore it.  But that's still a big IF... and again we won't know what they really want to do here for quite some time.

I dont think it would fit on east 4th, thats restaurant row as far as im concerned, you dont need grocery shoppers all over the place when your trying to eat.  Im thinking on prospect, there are so many vacant buildings towards ontario its ridiculous...or even go the other way towards east 9th

There had been some talk about Marc's possibily being interested in the 668 location.  Regardless of what you think of Marc's - it is a locally owned grocery/discount store.  It is more likely you are going to have an independant store or a locally owned store take the startup risk downtown then something like Trader Joes.

I'd love to have a Marc's in the neighborhood!

No where else can you buy mouthwash and tiki torches all in the same aisle! :)

Not sure if there already is something in the area and I just haven't found it, but is there any plan to get some sort of Ice Cream place down there?  90% of the time after dinner someone in the group wants ice cream (and not dessert from the restaurant). Example, Last night after the comedy show my gf wanted a milkshake, but I dont know anywhere downtown to get one later at night. I know there's a carvel in TC, but its not open that late.

I'd only accept a Marc's if they (or at least that location) started accepting plastic.

A little overhead goes a long way, folks (Aldi, I'm looking at you).

Ice Cream is a must, as well.  I think East Coast would do really well somewhere downtown, if not on E.4th/Euclid.

If you are going to do that...stay away from the national places (coldstone) and go local like mitchells...yummm

Ice Cream joints depend alot on the summer rush of people, and a lull in the winter or shut down in the winter (like East Coast Custard).  I don't know if there are enough people to create enough business in the summer months yet for ice cream like the lines you would typically see at these places.  Not a professional opinion, just thoughts.

Two words: Honey Hut.

Did I dream that La Strada's market will sell gelato?

Please say it was real!

Isn't there an ice cream/smoothie shop near Public Square (Suzy's?)

Two words: Honey Hut.

I agree - Old Brooklyn's Finest

I bet robeks could rake down in that area.

Not to go off-topic (forgive me for a moment, I've got ice cream on the brain.), but Honey Hut is literally the best ice cream I've had ANYWHERE. Let alone Old Brooklyn, Cleveland, or Ohio.

Yeah, but it's only open during business hours.

The East Coast in Mentor doesn't close in the Winter any more.  At least I don't think.  I know I would walk through a blizzard for Mint-chocolate chip Thursdays.

Believe it.

Don't forget those trolley's run until 11pm and have a stop directly in front of East 4th... so it shouldn't really be an issue.  If you need to tide yourself over on the weekend, CVS has beer and all the essentials.

in the city club presentation by RTA it was mentioned that the E line would go back to 7am until 7pm once the HealthLine opens, so sometime in late October.  apparently there was an agreement with CSU to keep the longer hours until the new line is operational.  i was hoping for service expansions on this popular route, not reductions and imo this is moving the service levels in the wrong direction - especially in the early dark and often cold months ahead.

that is probably a topic best for the RTA threads... but until we get our state to start funding transit properly I don't think service expansion will be in the vocabulary.

I thought the trolley was paid for by local corporations, no? Or is that only partial funding?

Did I dream that La Strada's market will sell gelato?

La Strada will have gelato...but I don't know at what price range.

Only partial.

I forget what thread this was contained in but that Cadilac for the eatery on Euclid is now on site and being welded in.  BABY BLUE

Marc's does accept plastic at select location. But with the majority of Marcs stores you're trading overhead for low prices.

how about a malleys? some place that is mostly chocolates and nuts, desserts etc. and can have ice cream in the summertime. plus its local.. and awesome!

Personally I'd prefer a "one and only" Pierre's Ice Cream store in downtown.  Home grown and unique.

Hello all. Long time reader, first time poster.

I noticed on the new East 4th Website that Blackfinn is not mentioned at all. I hope that MRN can get something else for that large storefront right on Euclid. Very excited for Erie Island though!

About a month ago I noticed that there was an eviction notice for the I-forgot-the-name Tavern LLC in the window on the Windsor Building (i.e. Blackfinn spot) and that the signs touting the space as the future home of Blackfinn disappeared.  I don't know anything concrete, but I suspect that the deal may have fallen through.

I'd rather see a grocery type store or something like Presti's or Aladdin's vs. yet another bar.  Some ATMs on E 4th would be handy too.

^I love the idea of a bakery right there.  Not sure if it's the highest and best use or if it would pay the rent, but hey, it's just an idea.

  • 2 weeks later...

The East 4th St. leasing office is moving from it's current location this Friday, which is much sooner than I had expected.  They will be moving into the second floor above the Corner Alley and Pickwick & Frolic.  That clears up the current space to be the afformentioned coffee shop.  Hope they move quick on this one.

  • 4 weeks later...

I bumped into the owner of LaStrada last Saturday and asked him when he planned on opening.  He told me 7-10 days (he was waiting on all the proper permits, etc.)  I saw training taking place when I took this picture yesterday... so I'd assume we are days away (I would think next weekend at most) from this place opening.

These signs appeared in the windows of the future Greenhouse Tavern (I am ludicrously excited for this place to open).

The E. 4th office is also cleaned out as well.  Still no sign yet on the cafe that will be going there.

Ha! Today they replaced some of the bushy tall planters with illuminated ice cubes for the winter... I think I like it!

I'll have mine on the rocks Mayor McCleveland!

Brewing Soon! :) Work is started for the Erie Island Coffee Co.

That looks cool.

That's awesome.  It could look tacky, but somehow it doesn't!!!  Maybe once it gets cold enough, they'll put some real ice sculputres along the street :-D.

The Ph.D. student that I used to work for when I was in undergrad just moved back to Cleveland last weekend.  She's never really seen E. 4th since she moved to Albany after graduation in 2005.  The mister and I are taking her and her husband there for dinner on Saturday, place TBD.  I hope she likes it - I'm sure she'll be impressed.

They do it every year at winterfest.  :)

Ooo, cool.  I learn new things every day around here!  I am so there - when is it supposed to be?

It's usually Thanksgiving weekend - haven't seen them update the website though.

You may want to call DCA - they get most of it together.
