Sparx Concert Series

The Sparx Concert Series is an energetic performance art series that takes place LIVE on various open spaces of downtown Cleveland, from June 4th- September 11, 2009. Every week the sidewalks come alive with free concerts from an entire roster of local bands and performance groups.

I know, I know...Im not informed...but can someone explain to me the bike station. I checked out the website and renderings...i dont quite understand what will go on there.

It's like a parking garage for bikes (I believe 50 spots) it also includes lockers for people to store their gear, and showers... Helping to mike bikes a legitimate form of transportation for people that work nearby or just want to visit the area. Most of the work will obviously take place inside the 1st floor of the garage. Plans are also already complete for revamping the area with a small plaza and landscaping. But the garage itself is pretty much a blank canvas, so the idea is to spruce it up with some public art that could be on the face of the garage itself, or in the new landscaped plaza area or both...

And you can rent bikes too says the DCA...

I hope this idea gets some security or else those showers will be used by an undesirable crowd. Do you think?

Oh you mean dirty people?

No, perhaps the "transient crowd" as someone mentioned in other posts.

It shows a front desk, so I would assume that it will be controlled access.

yes, I would imagine it is attended the whole time it is open to keep that from happening.

Perhaps this is already discussed here but I don't know what search terms to use. I've been noticing the big sign in the window of the large restaurant space at Euclid and E. 4th is gone; I was really looking forward to that very large restaurant opening there! All these workmen were in there today, as usual; I asked them if the restaurant is still coming, despite the sign removal, and one guy said something to the effect the restaurant is still coming but is to be facing Fourth instead. I said something about how I was looking forward to a really large, busy restaurant right on this corner (following several failed restaurant attempts) and he said the one mid-block is to be as large but for some reason the management preferred the E. Fourth space. I said something about there's really no space left on Fourth as large as on the corner and he then seemed to agree, I guess.

Anyway, would someone please shed some light on this? Where would the restaurant now go on E. Fourth? I hope he didn't mean it's one of the restaurants already there, with a different name. What does anyone know and when might this take place? There's no storefront on E. Fourth right now where work is obviously being done to create a new restaurant space.

Isnt there a nice vacant space on the east side of the street?? closer to pickwick and the erie island coffee?

right inbetween the two... and it's quite large.

Is that space on the SW corner of E 4th and Euclid the one that has been held up in litigation? If so, who are the players?

It has got to have developers drooling considering the size and location. Personally, I don't want to oversatturate E 4th with restaraunts so I am hoping for something different... not sure exactly what though.

I'd still like to see a good-sized restaurant there, as was planned for over a year. I'd like to see a lot of other things in many other buildings but not right there.

I agree that a restaurant would be a boring addition. How about something to play off the Corner Alley, like a small Dave & Busters? Or a Laser Tag? Or an extreme sports work-out club with a rock-climbing wall, half-tube for cyclists/skateboarders, a conveyor-belt ski slope, indoor skydiving and possibly similar things.

Dammit, do something creative! Do something different!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I hear the point, but actually if you look at the types of restaurants on E.4th, it's incredibly diverse --esp w/ the likes of Corner Alley, Pickwick/Hillarities, Erie Island coffeehouse and HOB, and it's T-shirt/etc, logo-hawking General Store next door. And of course, Lola... It would be one thing if all the restaurants were the sportsbar+hot wings joints that seem ubiquitous downtown. Given the tight scale of E. 4th (which makes it special in the 1st place), it seems more geared to smaller spaces, like art galleries, women's accessories shops or maybe returning a few of the jewelers.

I think we're putting too much pressure on E. 4th. I don't think any of us on UO, in our wildest dreams, would have expected the type/pace of development on this street 3-4 years ago. With the exception of a few spaces, the entire street is built out--from sub-grade parking to 5th floor condos/apts. We say that E. 4th needs a bookstore, shoe store, gallery, blah blah blah, etc. OR that it even needs to create nooks...E.4th is a nook itself! It's time for the adjacent properties and other "districts" of downtown to step up and supplement the great assets we already have. Don't get me wrong, I know there is other activity going on downtown and that E. 4th's development is an onging 1-2 decade process. What scares me is an "E.4th or bust" mentality where streets like Euclid get the leftovers.

Actually I'd like to see a big, popular big box-type store at Euclid and Fourth - OfficeMax? Book store??? Etc.

I don't think any of us on UO, in our wildest dreams, would have expected the type/pace of development on this street 3-4 years ago.

Amen to that. E. 4th is the best coordinated (truly) urban development Cleveland has seen in decades. It should be the working model we use for other neighborhoods, and not just downtown.

I could keep going: high quality, tasteful men's or M & W clothing store? Gift shop? Tasteful, high-grade jewelers? On and on....

Who needs tasteful jewelers when you've got VOLK'S...

Man .. those commercials were from 2004?!?!?

Are you sure they didn't mean 1994?! LOL.

Please tune into WCPN Ideastream tomorrow (June 9) for Around Noon, where

that will raise the profile of this project.

^^Thanks for posting!

This bike parking could actually let me look at other sites (Tremont Lofts, OC) to live other than actually downtown. It would have been completely pointless to pay for parking, but a little to far to walk. I'm really excited to hear more about this one.

Should that count as bike-induced sprawl?

So much better than car-induced sprawl. I can only make it 10 miles in an hour.

 • 2 weeks later...

1. The planters have been changed out. :)

2. I've noticed some activity in the bottom floor of the sincere building. Looks like they have been repairing the columns, which could be a precursor to more activity. I also noticed they started painting the inside of the windows to keep people like me to see what could be happening in there... that being said I haven't seen any work going on in about a week. It seems like they've temporarily stopped.

3. Most importantly... for all you architects, designers, artists, and otherwise creative types who always talk about wanting to "do something"... here's your shot. There has been some funding obtained to create a new bike station in the garage just south of Harry Buffalo. The funding allows for some public art on the space. All are welcome to submit designs. Deadline for entry is June 26. Cash prizes for top 3 entrants of $1,000, $750, and $500... and obviously the chance to have your design implemented on the spot. More information can be found here:

Good luck to all who decide to participate!

Just a reminder all submissions for this contest for anyone looking to participate are due next friday.

I drove up from Columbus and spent an evening on East 4th Street on Saturday night, and just posted an update on my blog about it. ;)

On Saturday we drove up to Cleveland to see Joel McHale do some stand up, but beforehand we met up with friends for dinner at Zocalo on East 4th Street in Downtown Cleveland.

Of my time spent in Cleveland, I had never set foot in this somewhat newish development, but was pretty impressed.

Reminds me a bit of a cross between the pedestrian area in the Arena District (in the stretch where Gordon Biersch and The R Bar are at) and Pearl/Lynn Alleys. Lots of energy on a Saturday night.

We ate at Zocalo (across the street from Lola) and enjoyed it. Good cheap drinks, and mostly-traditional semi-upscale mexican cuisine. I'm not going to go into an indepth restaurant review, but I will quickly say that the food was tasty, the atmosphere was excellent, and the live music (jimmy buffet covers) was god awful. I imagine that would be improved on a weeknight.

That being said... MAN do I hate driving to Cleveland. We took an extra long route to spend some time with family near Canton over the weekend, but still, I can't think of a worse way to spend a sleepy Sunday afternoon than driving southbound on 71 back to Columbus. Traffic isn't entirely congested on a non-holiday, but it's bad enough to where I can't just set the cruse control and relax. Even though we wouldn't have been able to take advantage of the proposed 3C service this weekend (East 4th Street is a one mile walk from the Amtrak station BTW), I would have loved to have had some of those extra cars off the road and bodies inside of a train.

So yeah... hurry up and build the 3-C, Ohio! So that I can consider spending more money in The Cleve.

Walker, tell State Senator Tom Patton of Strongsville. He sees the 3-C Corridor trains as a solution in search of a problem. Of course he does -- only 2 percent of Strongsville households lack a car.

Glad you liked East 4th Street. And the family (the Maron's) who redeveloped it are big supporters of the 3-C Corridor project. They sponsored All Aboard Ohio's 3-C Corridor Summit in Cleveland last January.

Joel actually had dinner at Lola before the show, so you guys could have carpooled!

Ha! Nice! :D

Downtown Cleveland bicycle rentals start Friday

by Michelle Jarboe/Plain Dealer Reporter

Thursday June 25, 2009, 5:03 PM

Make room for a some additional city traffic -- the two-wheel kind.

A new bicycle rental program launches today in downtown Cleveland. Dubbed City Bikes, it is part of a larger effort to make Cleveland a better place for cyclists.

The Downtown Cleveland Alliance recently bought 17 bikes that it will offer for rent daily on East Fourth Street. Next year, the rentals could move to a nearby parking garage, where the city plans to build a permanent bike station with indoor and outdoor parking, showers, lockers and changing rooms. The station, a $370,000 project, could open in the spring.

I really love the momentum that has been occuring with this: first the bike racks going in all over the city, then bikes lanes being put in/planned, now a $370,000 "bike station" in the heart of downtown.

17 bikes is a good start. It sounds like they don't want to get too big, but that seems like a perfect number to start.

BRUELL LANDS ON EAST FOURTH . . .

Apparently Parallax, Table 45 and L'Albatros aren't enough to occupy chef-restaurateur Zack Bruell's boundless energy. Soon he'll be lending his name, formidable imagination and precise execution to a fourth restaurant -- this one planned for downtown Cleveland's restaurant row on East Fourth Street. Look for Chinato to open this fall, at Fourth and Prospect Avenue.

"It will be an Italian restaurant -- or, at least my take on Italian," says Bruell.

Awesomeness. Will that make two Italian restaurants on E. 4th?

Awesomeness. Will that make two Italian restaurants on E. 4th?

Well, La Strada is more Mediterranean.

So we'll say, one and a half!

We're talking about the space across from Flanery's, right? Filling that in would be beautiful.

yes it's the spot across from flannery's... Bruell's current spaces have a very clean, modern, minamilist vibe and I can't wait to see what he does here... and how he deals with the size constraints.

Also... I heard the litigation tying up the former Blackfinn space across from corner alley has been resolved bringing that back into play.

^ that is good to hear those two corners sitting empty was not a good entrance to the street. It obviously did not hinder things too much as the whole street is just about filled but it did create an eyesore. Good to hear that the euclid one is back on the market.

Those are two voids that would book end 4th.. What would possibly go in the 4th and Euclid space? It would be nice to get a few galleries there...something other than eat/drink for window shoppers and browsers...the one looking to make an impulsive purchase of a unique item.

Bringing Blackfinn back into play? Im loving this. Keep things coming. If they can creep new development out onto propsect ill be thrilled. But as someone mentioned a few pages ago, eventually there will have to be more than restaurants.

Exactly, we need more evenly dispersed street level shopping to encourage more exploration and foot traffic throughout downtown. After polarizing things in all the districts..now it is time to connect the dots and fill in the blanks.

I don't know about L'albatros, but I know WRL (Westlake Reed Leskosky) was the Architect for Parallax.

The space, or Blackfinn as well?
