July 19, 201014 yr ^ Uncle Bills? Silvermans?.... Value City? Fazios?... Forest City Auto Parts?.. Jerry's Marine? Rego's? I can't wait! :-D
July 19, 201014 yr Malley's chocolate? That would make a killing there That's probably a good guess. I never thought of that. WRL is working on the design of the retail space. It will be names you've heard before with Cleveland retail... not a bad thing in this case. Yeah, Malley's a retail business which all Clevelander's have heard of. Are you saying it is not?
July 19, 201014 yr he is saying it won't be one thing. Not sure if that is right, but that is where his maker is. Still Arhaus furniture for me.

I think he just got the irresistible urge to use the BIG RED FONT. Don't read too much into it.

July 19, 201014 yr Marc's (I'm being serious this time) Somehow I don't see WRL getting involved in the design of a marc's.

July 19, 201014 yr Marc's (I'm being serious this time) Somehow I don't see WRL getting involved in the design of a marc's. Ha, true. I was thinking a lot of the "something that would benefit downtown" comment. DISCLAIMER: I hate Marc's. As much as a Malley's would be great (if it served ice cream), I would definitely put my money on something like Arhaus Furniture over Malley's. Are there any local upscale clothing stores or boutiques that would be possibilities? Maybe a second Banyan Tree?
July 19, 201014 yr They closed the Sony Store from Beachwood Mall earlier this year, and the closest one is in Columbus. This would be a good location. Of course what Cleveland really needs is a real Borders or Barnes & Noble (not that garbage at Tower City or CSU), but I'm sure the space here is too small.
July 19, 201014 yr I think it will be an Allied Radio store or a Clark's Restaurant (OK, you probably never heard of these places unless you're older than 60, and the only reason why I know of them is because of my 81-year-old father). Maybe it will be something "newer" like a Kenny Kings, Red Barn or a Burger Chef. Now THOSE I remember! July 19, 201014 yr Actually a book store is not a bad guess. You have to think what would work in this location. Grocery is immediately off the list IMO. Not for this pedestrian street, with no parking, no loading area, etc. I would think it has to be NOT a "destination store" (i.e. the reason you go to 4th St.) but rather a store that restaraunt goers and passers-by would want to pop into for a peak - such as a book store. An Apple store is another good guess.

July 19, 201014 yr I would love it if it were a museum of the best pop ever made, Cotton Club Cherry Strawberry, but its not likely.

So we're probably talking a Burrows, Thom McAnn or (drumroll please!) a Hough Bakery!! July 20, 201014 yr My guess: a Marc's or Drug Mart. I am sure the space is too small for a regular store but I am thinking a mini-version of the stores.
July 20, 201014 yr Barnes and Noble would be great but as someone said there probably isn't enough room.
July 20, 201014 yr man.... sherlock holmes most of you are not :) really, i can't think of a bigger clue than the fact that westlake, reed, lekosky is doing the design work. WRL is one of the more progressive and innovative firms in town. Therefore I think it is pretty safe to rule out any nationally branded store. Barnes & noble, walgreens, etc... these places don't hire a WRL. Malley's chocolate? Really, has anyone been inside a malley's chocolate, and then been inside of a space designed by WRL? They are polar opposites. With the hints that this will be designed by WRL and that these are "cleveland names" we would know... I would think... trendy. successful. botique.

July 20, 201014 yr Room Service has two blog entries about what a treasure East 4th is in the past month. I would say that's a successful boutique :)
July 20, 201014 yr Banyan Tree and Room Service are both great, but I don't think they have the cash to hire WRL, nor to pay the per s.f. costs for the space. I'm thinking of a consortium of museum shops which would act like a downtown annex to University Circle and draw folks to take the HealthLine down to CMA, CMNH, Severance Hall, CBG, etc.
July 20, 201014 yr Not all of us are architects or familiar with the company or their usual design, so we're just guessing for fun. Maybe it's just easier when you already know the answer?
July 20, 201014 yr I didn't realize that Sherlock Holmes knew everything, I thought he took clues and looked into them :-P Hey, I am just trying to point people in the right direction. If people want to continue thinking that a national retailer like barnes and noble, of which every store looks the same, would hire a local architect to ignore their brand or that the words "cleveland names we already know" weren't mentioned. Go right ahead. :-) And for the record I don't know the answer to this, though I did hear a rumor yesterday. But given what we have been told... WRL is designing the space and it's "cleveland names we know", I think it is pretty likely we are looking at a trendy botique who has been successful enough to open a second location. Malley's doesn't hire an architect... they just send someone to home depot to pick up a few gallons of pink and lime green paint and some slat wall.
July 20, 201014 yr Nobody knows how big this space is? Very hard to tell on this strip due to its history as our original theatre district. Potentially, it could be very large or it could be a rather small space.
July 20, 201014 yr How about Evolution Yoga Studios & Boutique? Or maybe some of the other locally owned boutique stores at Eton on Chagrin Blvd?
July 20, 201014 yr Nobody knows how big this space is? Very hard to tell on this strip due to its history as our original theatre district. Potentially, it could be very large or it could be a rather small space. It's about 2,000 sq. ft. on each floor. Two floors, so a total of about 4,000 sq ft.
July 20, 201014 yr I would have guessed some type of local souvenir shop (perhaps sports related) but Mr. Mayor makes a good point about WRL's involvement and what clues that offers. July 20, 201014 yr Barnes and Noble would be great but as someone said there probably isn't enough room. This is not a local Cleveland name. Its simply a national clone chain. Nothing unique about it.
July 20, 201014 yr How about Evolution Yoga Studios & Boutique? Or maybe some of the other locally owned boutique stores at Eton on Chagrin Blvd? HA... Lady gaga went there when she was in town last week. Side note: don't forget titan's gym has yoga. But that's not really retail. My mind says adult mart, but my gut says... No idea

July 20, 201014 yr I'm thinking a small local furniture gallery. Isn't there a guy on the East side (Willoughby maybe?) that just won some kind of furniture design award?
July 20, 201014 yr I'm thinking a small local furniture gallery. Isn't there a guy on the East side (Willoughby maybe?) that just won some kind of furniture design award? They say it's well known however. What about Brooks Brothers?

July 20, 201014 yr TravelCenters of America?? Well nobody else seemed to appreciate this, but I got a good laugh. How about A Piece of Cleveland showroom?
