What is the Banyan Tree, and would that be cool to have on 4th.

LOCAL

Are you saying that b/c  you know?  Nobody said local, just names you have heard in Cleveland before.

What is the Banyan Tree, and would that be cool to have on 4th.

Banyan Tree is an awesome home, clothing, and accessories boutique in Tremont.

No I dont know but thats a Philly based company.  I dont see it here.

TravelCenters of America??

Well nobody else seemed to appreciate this, but I got a good laugh.

It was the only retail on their website.

Pet Land? I feel that down town has been in need of a pet store for quite a while and I'm pretty sure it's local??

How about a combination of Hough Bakeries/Burroughs/Richman Brothers? An homage to long-ago Cleveland retail?

It is an extremely popular and successful boutique in Tremont. I'm surprised that you've never heard of it.

The Rock n roll hall of fame gift shop annex.

Or maybe The Only Cleveland Store...but don't think they have the money for this.

Is there a grand prize for anyone who guesses correctly?

A small grocery store like an “S&R Market” in Brookpark or a mini trader Joe’s type store. I would think there’s enough local traffic for a small grocery store to be successful, even if there is no parking.

I would be in favor of a nice specialty grocer.... But since we mention "parking" and if one its willing to take a short drive or bus trip.... There is a food co-op near Little Italy, and one eventually emerging on the near west side.... Better off supporting that if you want to support the real/original concept the local/independent food/products effort, than TJ's. They were established long before the chains.

I would prefer a different pet store than Pet Land because Pet Land is tied to puppy mills.

I know nothing, but I would be shocked if it was a grocery.  Mark my words, it is going to be a "...hey, while I'm here..." type of store... if you know what I mean.

I agree. In fact, although not a full line pet store....I ran a very well respected aquarium store for 7 years and a service for 15..and if I still had the interest in it, I would consider opening up a custom aquarium shop that teaches environmental ethics in aquarium keeping.

Here we go.

Can we please keep this on topic about East 4th Street Developments?

Big Fun?

How long do we have to wait till we find out?

Big Fun would be extremely popular!  That Brooks Brothers suggestion - did you happen to know about the outlet in Tower City?  Cheesh!

I think this is the storefront that used to be a two-floor cheapo clothing outlet - first floor and basement, right?  It did have character, though.  Or is it the former Morlin's that had the second floor - sort of a small department store with kitchen and bath items upstairs? Stairway was to the right. Merchandise was about Woolworth's quality. Hard to picture anything other than food in that block.  Only exception now is shops that go with Pickwick and Frolick and House of Blues.

Does anyone know if Chinato's is still planning to put up a decent sign? When I asked the first time someone said they were having trouble having it approved.  Now it's many months later and still no sign worthy of the character of the street....

So many things downtown Cleveland can use and can be successful!  Kinds of establishments that used to flourish here and continuously flourish in other metropolitan downtowns: large bookstore, large office store, large photography store, large computer store, large newspaper/magazine store.  On and on....

All of which we actually already have on a smaller more independent/locally owned scale if you just look hard enough. I just wonder how many who say we need more of this or that..and I am not disagreeing...would actually support the places..OR, do we want it just so downtown can "play dress-up" like a big city...so we can show our friends how "cool" it looks like a sort of museum to what functioning real downtowns used to be like. Just wondering.

I am also really surprised at how popular 4th is...yet when it comes to any empty fronts nearby, there seems to be 0 effort to maintain the curb appeal to make the spaces more marketable, via washing windows, window art, etc...  The theater building on Euclid near Cad. Ranch is a prime example...as well as how long the bodies space sat looking like crap. If this area cannot be a prime example of the best curb appeal for the old buildings.. I don't know what can. It really is as simple a matter as the idea of washing your hands before you eat. Simple things that make a collective big difference. We don't quite grasp this concept as a city and how far it goes in presenting the best image even in bad times. The ideals have been mostly lost.

^How many of those things would fit on E. 4th street?  Lets keep this on topic.

It's Room Service.

I have sources close to the situation that tell me Room Service (www.roomservicecleveland.com) is moving from Gordon Square to this new space on East 4th Street.  Note that they're MOVING, not adding a second location.

Also joining Room Service at this location will be Wrath Arcane (www.wratharcane.com) -- a men's clothing designer.  I think it's going to be one entrance and then once you're inside, half will be Room Service and half will be Wrath Arcane.  But this is just speculation on my part.

Interesting note that the August 7 Room Service blog article (http://blog.roomservicecleveland.com/?p=2973) mentions Wrath Arcane and the fact that they'll be joining together to form a new blog called Dredgers Union.

So how will this do on East 4th?  Room Service is pretty upscale.  It's not cheap.  So maybe moving downtown, they're trying to reach people living and working downtown.  And obviously they're hoping to take advantage of the popular restaurants/bars on the street.  But unlike Gordon Square, it's tough for people to find free parking for East 4th Street.  People probably won't be making trips JUST to go to Room Service...

So 8ShadesofGray wins a cupie doll for being the first person on this forum to guess Room Service.  :)  I think it's a loss for Gordon Square/Detroit Shoreway but a gain for downtown.

People probably won't be making trips JUST to go to Room Service...

This is what I've been saying.  It is the only way, IMO, to make retail work on E. 4th at the moment.  It has to be a "while I'm here" type of store to survive.

I may have to make a slight correction here...  While it's true that the owner of Room Service and the owner of Wrath Arcane are joining forces to open a retail shop on East 4th, it might not be called "Room Service".  Evidently, the owner of Room Service will be selling Room Service on Detroit.  If someone new buys it, they may or may not keep the Room Service name.

The person behind Room Service is also the person behind Made in the 216, so expect that type of thing: clothing, gifts, crafts, etc...  In any case, a good thing for East 4th and maybe not a horrible thing for Gordon Square, depending on what happens in that space.

I hadn't heard about the addition of wrath arcane, that is going to be a great store with a nice mix on 4th.  and I'm glad to hear room service is being sold, GS needs that store.  and IMO a new owner would be crazy to get rid of that name...

ADD:  Also, there is much more street parking downtown than people seem to realize.  Unless there is a game going on.  Getting a metered spot in Gateway... often right by e. 4th never seems to be a problem.  I think there are plenty of people who will be willing to pay 25 cents and come from all over the inner ring area to visit a store of this caliber.

Surprised about Room Service since I thought the owner was very dedicated to Gordan Square.

Wrath Arcane is a pretty big deal.  Their stuff is known everywhere (in certain segments)

And its totally Cleveland.  And since the closure of Brigade in the WHD, they only have the place in Coventry (and the studios in midtown)

I think this is great news for E 4th and can't wait to check it out... but I don't see the positive spin people are putting on this for Gordon Square. I mean it is another store closing in an area that is supposed to be up and coming. This is the second store closing in that little strip - how can a new owner keep the same name? I guess I am missing something but am open to an explanation.

^It is my impression from the above posts that people are not positive about a store closing at Gordon Square, but the possbility it is NOT closing...that the owner of Room Service may be selling that space and it will remain open there, either with that name or another.

Ok - I guess that makes sense. I was reading wrong - thanks for clarifying.

The Wrath Arcane website already lists Room Service as a store carrying their products (in addition to Brigade).

Very glad to hear this news.

There hasn't been anywhere to buy anything down here since J Crew and B. Republic left Twr City. and Gap too.

If I may be so crass as to say....I will be dropping cash at these 2 places.

(with a smile on my face)  :-D

Go Downtown!!!

I'm pretty psyched about this...it's kind of a big deal actually- it's the first new retail storefront East of public square in quite some time (other than convenience stuff), no?  Fingers crossed a single store is able to make it alone.  Oh how I hope we look back at this and later identify it as the beginning of a new retail cluster.

I've never heard of either store.  Very interesting!

I have to admit, I did not know wrath arcane either, but I do now.

Wow, CLE based and sold all over the world.  A W E S O M E !

Where is the actual storefront going to be?

(sorry if that has been posted, but I could not find it)

Yeah, they started partnering when she (Room Service girl) was doing made in the 216, and she started carrying some of their stuff.

Also, if I remember right Brigade is owned by one of the Wrath Arcane guys....

I hope this retail is the start of a trend.  I was shocked to discover, on my cross-country drive to Cleveland, that Omaha, Nebraska has more downtown retail than Cleveland (it's in their beautifully preserved/restored Old Market Section--think the Warehouse District but with more patios, beautiful overhangs w/ flowers, and brick streets.)  And that was the only nice thing about Omaha.

Omaha's "Old Market Section" had more stores/shopping than Tower City?  Surprising..

It is not surprising to me.... Nebraska also does not have several major metro areas sprawling all over the place all competing for the same chunk of pie. Sprawl sucking the life out since the 50's from the cores...now the exurbs suck it out of the inner burbs and all metro areas virtually taking a path that they will be bumping into one another...  If we were the only large metro area in Ohio...and if our overall population was lower...you'd see much more being easily retained in the core city.

Perhaps I should have clarified.  I'm talking about street level shops with entrances along that street, (boutiques, etc) not a mall.  Retail that has an urban feel.

Where is the actual storefront going to be?

Middle of East 4th Street on the east side of the street between Pickwick and Erie Island Coffee.  Last remaining vacant space.

This will also be nice because they probably won't have an outdoor seating area so it won't contribute to that "cattle chute" feeling I sometimes feel all those railings on East 4th create.
