I used to stay in that hotel all the time when I was working on a project in NY.  The rooms are so small it defies logic.  You actually have to step over the toilet to get in the shower.

at any rate... back to east 4th ;)

So are we only trying to draw hip people to E. 4th and Chinato in particular?

You'd have to ask Zach that.

I think that E 4th has a good mix of places that cater to different age groups, culinary experiences, and times of the day and evening. If there is such a variety of places, why expect then for there to be uniformity when it comes to the size, type, or even existence of signage?

If the place works, then keep it well maintained, bring in businesses that compliment (not conform to) what exists, and let the independent businesses worry about how they put out the welcome mat.

Sure Chinato may be doing well but I think a decent sign, that would be seen for some distance (like the other signs on the street), will bring still more customers. One nice thing about the street is the wide variety in restaurants (various sizes, cultures, and price ranges ) yet everyone, except one, cooperating - so to speak -

in investing something to show they are part of this uniqute Cleveland district.  All signs are unique but creative and reflect each's individual restaurant style.

Maybe they will improve their signage when they are concerned with attracting walk-ins.

I know there were plans for signage and some "historic obstacles", though I don't know where it is currently at.

I was reading one of the recent Cleveland magazine issues and it mentions the Bodies exhibit, saying it will be open until 1/2 (I'm assuming Jan 2nd).  The Bodies website and all previous info says Oct 31st.  Was there an unannounced extension, or is it a CM typo?

I can say quite definitively that ROOM SERVICE has zero intentions of either CLOSING or MOVING locations at this time.  RS LOVES GORDON SQUARE ARTS DISTRICT and has worked very passionately in promoting it.

"West 25th is luring some retailers away from other up-and-coming Cleveland neighborhoods. Since opening on Detroit Avenue in late 2007, Room Service has become known for eclectic products and DeBoe's ever-growing "Made in the 216" sales of local merchandise. As the store outgrew its 650 square feet, DeBoe could not find the perfect space nearby. Room Service closed this month and will reopen in Ohio City by late November, in 2,000 square feet that last housed an Amish furniture store."

so if room service is moving to W25th, then what is going into the space on e4th?

I thought it was a flooring store that the Amish had there. It was when I was there.

Never mind what the Amish-related business was (I passed it Sat. and couldn't tell).  Let's get on with it:  What the Deuce is going on with the last vacant space on E. 4th?  No sign of anything new whatsoever when one peers in there.  Kind of a mess.

looks almost like storage

U Store It? :)

looks almost like storage

Staging area, perhaps?

...Let's get on with it:  What the Deuce is going on with the last vacant space on E. 4th?...

Won't we have 2 vacancies once the Bodies Exhibit leaves?

Or maybe the Dredgers Union (or whatever that name was) is going in there.

so if room service is moving to W25th, then what is going into the space on e4th?

I'm still sticking with my story that I said back in August: that Danielle (the owner of Room Service) is opening a retail store in that location on East 4th -- in addition to the one she's moving to West 25th.

By the way, construction on the Bike Station at the end of 4th should begin on Monday...

good, how long will this project take

DCA wants it to be open by Spring, sometime in March or April.

Well, they would be opening a second location then, so I wouldn't say your original statement was accurate.

I have sources close to the situation that tell me Room Service (www.roomservicecleveland.com) is moving from Gordon Square to this new space on East 4th Street.  Note that they're MOVING, not adding a second location.

There may be something to the fact that both locations we've speculated about their moving to are MRN projects.  Maybe they were going for East 4th, but in the end decided that W. 25th works better for them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Are you sure the W. 25 building is part of the MRN project?  I know they have the highrise bank building, along with some parcels in Lorain (such as the bldg. that long houses the Greek store) but I'm not certain about south of the bank bldg. on W. 25th. People at Salty Not Sweet said Sat. yes - they're moving to We. 25th by the end of 2010 or so.

^That question probably belongs in the Ohio City thread.

As I have said before, RS, and any potential other ventures that ownership may be getting involved in are separate entities.

Anything in store for the soon to be vacant Bodies exhibit? Some functional retail would be nice and needed.

Well it takes up several storefronts so It could possibly be broken down to several different spaces.

Hate to revisit this, but, is there a better place for the fire sculptures?  They seem distracting now from a very handsome southern entrance to E 4th

But is it 'world class'?

It bears revisiting often.  Those things are spine-tinglingly hideous.  A better place would be at the bottom of lake Erie.

A landfill no doubt.

I would think it was just a normal alley if not for those "gems".

We have an empty storefront... Teresa's pizza is now closed.

What?????????????????

Maybe we can get some needed non-restaurant retail in its place.

Woman in new Room Service on W. 25th Sat. told me, when I mentioned some had said they were moving to E. 4th instead, that a different style venue is still planned for the E. 4th space. Didn't want to divulge any details, though.  Said something like "You'll find out."

Updated, but it still says that Erie Island Coffee is "Coming Soon".

Has anyone else heard that one of the current e.4th businesses will be moving to the vacant space in the middle of the street?

If what I heard was correct one of our prestigious chefs needs more space.

interesting

E. 4th needs a lot of wig shops. Also pawnbrokers, schlock jewelry and schlock, cheap duds. Ah, nostalgia.... Bring me the good ol' days of downtown.

I wish this street had more diversity.  Its really just becoming a large outdoor food court.
