August 25, 201113 yr "There is a lot of activity going on with infrastructure now to make Cleveland a more bike-friendly city." Except for right around the corner at Ontario and Prospect!
August 25, 201113 yr What ever happened to the public art of handle bars with streamers on the building there? It does need something as the wall of the parking garage is pretty bland.
August 25, 201113 yr Just a few questions. 1. Is C.L.E. Clothing Co. actually moving into the Windsor Building corner storefront on East 4th? 2. Whats with the storefront next Dredgers Union? 3. Any idea what the plans are for the Volk's building? 2. They pulled off the boards and revealed a new storefront today, and some interior framing has been done. I don't know if they have the space leased or to whom, though.
September 3, 201113 yr WOW!! CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A T-shirt business born in Cleveland will open a brick-and-mortar shop downtown, adding to a fledgling retail resurgence on East Fourth Street. CLE Clothing Inc. has signed a lease on an 1,800-square-foot space at East Fourth and Euclid Avenue, connected to the new Positively Cleveland visitors center. The store, tentatively set to open in late October, will hawk Cleveland-centric merchandise ranging from shirts to hats to artwork. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/09/cle_clothing_a_t-shirt_busines.html
September 3, 201113 yr ^ very good choice -- they have some clever tees! "Dredgers has had a great summer, so we're encouraged by that" said Ari Maron of MRN Ltd., the developer of the East Fourth neighborhood. "We're slowly trying to get a critical mass of retail in this part of the city." ari maron for mayor!

September 3, 201113 yr ...The store, tentatively set to open in late October... Yet another thing to look forward to in the coming season. It really is amazing what is scheduled to open up in the CBD and over into Ohio City. From the Calfee Building, to the Allen Theater-CPH partnership in Playhouse Sq, to this CLE store -- which will get rid of an empty zone -- at the pivotal corner of E. 4th & Euclid, to the restaurants in WHD and over to the restaurants/retail places in Ohio City scheduled for Sept. and Oct. openings. Bring on Fall!

Bring on Fall! Totally agree :) And by the way, with this new store on East 4th, that leaves what, like 2 vacant storefronts in the East 4th/Euclid area? I know its almost completely full
September 3, 201113 yr Hopefully the developers are sensitive to the idea of "cross pollinating" downtown.... by this I mean districts actually promoting each other; not solely themselves. Example...word of mouth while city visitors are in one district spending....that they may want to check out "this other part of downtown too" is the basic rule of thumb. It amazes me at how many people go downtown here for visits, meetings, etc... and head straight for the districts, without being familiar with anything in between. Does this suggest spotlighting only a few spots? And, there is a lot in between actually. This way we spread foot traffic all over and not have it corralled in one spot. IMO, there are times I find E. 4th rather obnoxious in appearance, as it looks like one giant outdoor food court/feed lot..... But, having said this, the infusion of other kinds of business is nice and can start to dilute that feedlot feel. I hope that such a store like this, after people spend money in it, can have employees who are familiar enough with all of downtown say... "Hey, thanks for shopping here... one other interesting place you may want to check out here is The Only Cleveland Store" over in TC... Thanks..have a great day! That is what I mean by "cross pollinating" in that sense. Well trained employees can be and should be ambassadors to our city. Its the non-selfish thing to do, and in a downtown as concise and easy to navigate by foot as we have, it should not be a problem..... But, with the often lack of knowledge of our downtown and what it offers...by visitors and even suburban folks who continued the trend of hardly venturing downtown in years...or who work here and go straight from the office to the car to the interstate.... some seem to think walking 10 minutes is like walking 10 miles! What a bad car habit we've gotten into! :-o
September 8, 201113 yr Some people's speculation was correct, saw this via @cleclothingco Twitter... http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/09/cle_clothing_a_t-shirt_busines.html
September 8, 201113 yr Awesome. Ari is correct -- it's going to create a critical mass of retail in an area where Euclid Avenue retail was born more than 120 years ago. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 11, 201113 yr Why so much black? Doesn't it make it very inviting, IMHO. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 11, 201113 yr I don't like the MDF finishes that have been applied to all of these storefronts. I'm really surprised that the city is allowing this type of material to be used for a permanent facade.
September 12, 201113 yr I actually like how this looks. Btw, the signage is not all up. Page 97 of this thread shows what all will go up, including things like LED displays etc. It looks like the 4 long banners were put up late today.

I love how E.4th keeps spilling around the corner with lighting and activity.
September 12, 201113 yr Hey, at least they have a rail transit icon among others in their storefront design. :-D "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 12, 201113 yr I don't like the MDF finishes that have been applied to all of these storefronts. I'm really surprised that the city is allowing this type of material to be used for a permanent facade. Is that what the black panels and the brown ones above them are? From the photos, I think both look bad. Really, I think that whole double storefront is a big visual failure, as much from MRN's rehab than anything CLE+ is doing. Disappointing, but I've sort of lost faith in MRN's aesthetic sense, so I guess not surprising. And Positively Cleveland's logo is horrible. Looks like the logo of a child-centered charity with faux-child-like script. I like the vinyl decals in the window though. And I'm hoping the LEDs somehow improve the whole mess.
September 12, 201113 yr i would hold off commentary on the storefront until the LEDs are installed it is the largest component of the signage and fills in almost all of the black mdf area.
September 12, 201113 yr I didn't realize the black panel was a backdrop for an LED display/scroll. That changes things for me. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 13, 201113 yr I've always liked Positively Cleveland's logo for some reason, but to each their own! I'll try and walk by after work and see if there are any updates.
September 13, 201113 yr I didn't realize the black panel was a backdrop for an LED display/scroll. That changes things for me. They had one outside of their space at the Higbee Building. I was curious if they were going to put it up on this new space too. I LOVE those things. They're so New York. :-D
November 3, 201113 yr A good article on Ari Maron from Cleveland Magazine: Urban Active Ari Maron masterminded East Fourth Street's atmosphere and assembled its dream team of shop owners and top chefs. Now he's bringing his ideas about making cities exciting to Ohio City and University Circle. His goal is nothing less than to change Cleveland's destiny. http://clevelandmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=E73ABD6180B44874871A91F6BA5C249C&nm=Article+Archives&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=1578600D80804596A222593669321019&tier=4&id=4754E16D1FF04663A65E792FC2254422
November 3, 201113 yr AWESOME article! For me, this article is more than "E. 4th." His impact on the city is sky rocketing: - E.4th - Tudor Arms Renovation - Uptown in University Circle - Ohio City I think I'm liking this guy.
November 4, 201113 yr Ari Maron for Mayor in 2014 https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
November 4, 201113 yr I think I would prefer to keep him in private development. I have no desire to waste his immense talents at City Hall ;)
November 4, 201113 yr I think I would prefer to keep him in private development. I have no desire to waste his immense talents at City Hall ;) Good point. I would love to see the same E4th type intimate neighborhood atmosphere extended to streets like E 6th & Vincent, E12th near Euclid, and Huron between E9th and Playhouse Square. But I'll end the off topic thoughts there. https://www.instagram.com/cle_and_beyond/https://www.instagram.com/jbkaufer/
November 4, 201113 yr And he's a big supporter of public transit and rail, so you know I like him! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 17, 201113 yr CLE + sign has gone up. Also CLE Clothing seems pretty close to being ready to open.
November 18, 201113 yr As an addition, they are now adding brackets for the aforementioned LED (or some type of display) boards. It wasn't all up when I walked by this morning, but looked like enough to stretch from Logo to Logo. It will be nice to see that spot completely finished.
November 18, 201113 yr I hope they plan on repairing the tiles at and near the base of the storefront or thresholds.
November 23, 201113 yr Chris Hodgson from dim and dem sum is opening a restaurant in the Zinc space at 668 Euclid Ave
November 23, 201113 yr Chris Hodgson from dim and dem sum is opening a restaurant in the Zinc space at 668 Euclid Ave Are you sure it is the Zinc space and not the former Caddyshack place? Zinc has seemed to do pretty well in that spot. Additionally from Dim and Dem Sum's facebook page they stated there would be plenty of FREE parking. I know that 668 has a garage from the Euclid side, but I don't think it is free.
November 23, 201113 yr This post? ""Hodge's" restaurant will be located in downtown Cleveland, very excited to be a part of the heart of the city.... and dont worry we have our own parking ;) no need to pay more" One person then commented this in response to another persons guess of East 4th... " E 4th parking sucks so I'm guessing not. Would be nice though." And then Dim and Dem Sum commented back... "not if you have your own lot ;)"
November 23, 201113 yr Never heard parking being such a topic of conversation when opening a hopefully interesting restaurant.

It will be interesting how this, the FFB/Tilted Kilt issue, and the ground floor spot in the Casino Welcome Center play out. Hopefully there will be some more info soon. Dim and Dem Sum's facebook page said there would be an announcement in 8 days, which would put it tomorrow on Thanksgiving. I imagine it will be Friday.
November 23, 201113 yr Hodge's is definitely going in the zinc space. they bought zinc out, i know they had been offered the caddyshack space... perhaps they wanted that patio and started conversations that lead to a deal.
November 23, 201113 yr ^I never had a chance to patronize Zinc...how did they do? Did things slow down in the winter for some reason (I know they had a great and popular patio). Did they just get an offer they could not refuse.
November 23, 201113 yr I heard the food was very hit miss at Zinc and the service excruciatingly slow - more than one report of weekday business lunches taking 2 hours. Because of that, I never went.
November 23, 201113 yr I was there last summer for an alumni networking theory. Pretty cool venue and an open bar is an open bar. Didn't try the food though.
November 25, 201113 yr CLE Clothing Company opened today. pictures on their facebook. http://www.facebook.com/CLECLOTHING
November 25, 201113 yr Wow... Caddy Shack didn't last long... and this idea of lack of parking is nauseating talk. Man, unless someone has it handed to them through a window....or if they might have to walk for 60 seconds, they're clueless as to how to utilize a downtown. Is the new interest taking over Zinc another Asian place? We surely lack such food here...
November 26, 201113 yr Another beautiful piece of the E. 4th puzzle. I wish them the best. CLE Clothing Company opened today. pictures on their facebook. http://www.facebook.com/CLECLOTHING
November 29, 201113 yr Hodge's is definitely going in the zinc space. they bought zinc out, i know they had been offered the caddyshack space... perhaps they wanted that patio and started conversations that lead to a deal. It will be interesting to see what they do with the Zinc space then. The impression that I have gotten regarding their restaurant is that it will be similar to their Dim and Dem Sum foodtruck. Which is a completely different atmosphere than what Zinc currently is. IMO, Zinc was always good, never great but good. Their patio really is fantastic so hopefully that will be fully taken advantage of. It is interesting that they were bought out, they could work in another spot DT especially over by PHS.
