Hodge's is definitely going in the zinc space. they bought zinc out, i know they had been offered the caddyshack space... perhaps they wanted that patio and started conversations that lead to a deal.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the Zinc space then.  The impression that I have gotten regarding their restaurant is that it will be similar to their Dim and Dem Sum foodtruck.  Which is a completely different atmosphere than what Zinc currently is.

IMO, Zinc was always good, never great but good.  Their patio really is fantastic so hopefully that will be fully taken advantage of.  It is interesting that they were bought out, they could work in another spot DT especially over by PHS.

Whatever the new restaurant, the MUST maintain the patio decor of Zinc... Along w/ Pier W., it's the sexiest eating venue in the region, imho.

I posted this news in the restaurant thread, but since we're talking about it, I thought he said there would be a parking lot. There's no parking for Zinc, is there?

FYI,

The Cleveland Clothing Co. is not open today. I tried the door that was locked and the dude who was standing behind the counter just stared at me. When I asked him if they were open, he just shook his head.

What a great first impression.

I think there is Valet service in conjunction with the 668 garage.  But that was what made me question this spot too, pretty sure they indicated "FREE" parking.  Could be that with a receipt from their restaurant parking is "FREE".

The LED strip is up at the CLE Visitors Center.  Looks good!

Was nice to have a chance to stop by CLE Clothing and Dredger's Union on E 4th after dinner at Noodlecat tonight. My first visit each to the 2 stores - 2nd to Noodlecat. Dredger's Union was pretty much what I'd hoped - sort of a home-grown Anthropologie... and my wife found a great winter coat there after looking all day at Beachwood Place/Legacy... so that was a plus. Store looks like a million, all things considered. CLE Clothing was fun - but the space is about 4x bigger than they currently need right for the quantity of goods being sold... Sparsely merchandised. Looks empty... I'd fill it with SOMETHING... even just Cleveland favorites they dont' manufacture (Eulcid Beach popcorn balls, stadium mustard, etc..) More than anything I'd be worried you have to sell a whole bunch of t-shirts (and they really didn't have THAT many different kinds) to pay for that space...

Thought the dark CLE+ Visitors Center offices were a shame. Where are the window mounted HDTVs with CLE+ videos playing, etc... Frankly didn't look for the scrolling sign - it might have been on - but sure didn't notice. The "enter from next door" cheap signs poorly taped to one of the doors looked awful.. (said something about Sports commission). Needed life...

A sign for the interstate highway system in the middle of downtown--just outside the visitor's center---in the 1st photo above showing the new visitor's center--is horrible and truly sends the wrong message. it screams, 'get out of here, fast!'. can that be taken down?

The visitor center make the outside of the building look nice. I still think they are wasting some very valuable space though. Lower Euclid, right next to East 4th. And they take up several storefronts.

We went shopping early this morning...Dredger's was the same thing I've come to expect from them....nothing but impeccable service.  CLE had a lot more merchandise than at the end of last year. The staff was definitely off-putting, but very friendly.  After about 10 minutes in the store they asked if sizes were needed.  Most people would have already walked out of the store. I'm sure they've been talked to about the complaints, but I don't think it was taken that seriously. As a previous retail store manager, I was appalled by the mess in the store only an hour after opening (with two girls sitting at the registers chatting the entire time.  On the bright side, if this morning was any indication of typical business on a snowy winter day, downtown retail has much potential. Between my party of three and the other shoppers that were out, about $1500 was spent between the two stores alone.

JJ,

See the Retail thread. Pretty much everyone have had the same experiences at both stores (myself included). The bottom line is the CLE store just doesn't give a sh*t. I for one will never go back. I always try to buy local but I refuse to go in there again. It's almost offensive how far they go to ignore you. I think the owner is the worst offender.  Besides, if I want Cleveland themed t-shirts, I'll either wait for the Made in the 216 events or buy them at Room Service.

At least the CLE+ corner, esp the building above, looks quite attractive.  For so many years it was dilapidated, and then, ugli-fied with that temporary Bodies exhibit...

I'm very happy for Dredger's Union.  It's a classy store.

I had really good service at CLE a couple weeks ago. Both clerks were really friendly, I guess it's just hit or miss. Too bad. If they get a lot more merchandise and fix their service problems I think they could be really successful

OK, guys.  This is the "East 4th Street Development" thread, not the "rate the service at CLE" thread.

Does anyone know what is going on next to Dredgers?  That little storefront that is under construction?

Wanted to post this in "Filling in Euclid" chain, but see that is due to be locked (or locked already).

Can anyone with influence get the plywood "wall" on the southern side of Euclid btwn Bang and Clatter and Jimmy John's covered?  It would seem a collaborative vinyl "poster" that advertises the "Casino this way" or "Enjoy the Healthline" or "East 4th Shops and Restaurants this way" could be done.  While we would all prefer something go INTO that space, right now it just needs a better cover!

I just noticed on my lunch break today that it appears to be some type of action going on at that store front. Good news is the plywood has been taken down, for now. Hopefully they will just make it more appealing to a tenant so someone can move in sooner. (I was also looking for the Filling in Euclid chain and noticed the same thing)

I dont understand how that storefront sits vacant for so long. Could there be something wrong with the space?

Not exactly East 4th, but close.  Sushi 86 will be getting a new sign for their Prospect Avenue location at the south end of the Euclid Arcade.

Was just thinking of getting some sushi today, too. Since that is right by the PM job, I think I 'll get some before I go in.

Anybody ever order from there before?

Yes, it's good inexpensive sushi.

Coffee, cafes, cupcakes, hotels and even more new businesses opening in downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND - The countdown to Cleveland's new casino is on, and that's sparking other business.

When can you remember seeing so many construction workers in downtown Cleveland?

"I was born and raised here. I’ve lived other places, but I came back to Cleveland because there's a love for this city that's in us that you just can't explain," said Mickey DeAngelo.

DeAngelo, a chef for years, is now opening his own place, Nexus Cafe and Coffeehouse at 627 Prospect Avenue. Not far from Cleveland's new casino, which is already triggering construction of a new hotel, restaurants and more shopping is expected.

"In the next five years, Cleveland is not going to look anything like it does now. This whole block is changing from here to University Circle -- its resurgence and for us it's a perfect time to come in," he said.

DeAngelo is not alone. Cleveland Chef Chris Hodgson, who was featured on The Food Channel, is opening a restaurant next door to Nexus on Prospect Avenue and Colossal Cupcake is going in on nearby Euclid Avenue.

Colossal Cupcake is moving in next to Radio Shack. Looking forward to a cool place for deserts. We could use a good ice cream/gelato shop downtown.

Would that be in one of those store fronts leading into Colonial Marketplace?

Maybe you are thinking of the new Nexus coffee?  That is on Prospect.

What is happening to the bottom of the parking garage across from the casino and the casino's "visitor center?"  There is plywood up all over the windows there.  I saw it in the video.

That's what it use to be, not sure if that is what is going in.

Has anyone heard anything about the space beside Dredger's Union yet?  There's work going on inside (I peeked in while heading to DU today) Nexus Coffee shop is also moving along on Prospect.

Didn't Dredgers Union say they wanted to expand because of the success they've had? Maybe the work going on is an expansion of their store

They have their whole basement to use still.

Yeah their initial intent was to expand to the basement.

I've asked various workers at surrounding businesses on E4th and no one has had any idea what it was.  They all seemed rather curious too.  Work does not seem to be progressing very quickly, but it does look like a complete gut job.

The space in question is rather small, right? I wonder what it could be.

It's around the same size as Erie Coffee.

Yeah their initial intent was to expand to the basement.

My understanding from chatting with them a couple times was that ADA compliance was a major hindrance to any plans for basement expansion. Their position seemed to be that they weren't worried about special events down there (like Made in the 216) but that their understanding was that a retail presence down there would require elevator installation, something that wasn't financially feasible for them at present.

And I spoke with the designer and he said they're keeping it very hush hush, so it's def not DU.

Do they really need elevators?  Couldn't they put in one of those lifts that RTA uses?

The elevators aren't just for people in wheelchairs.  Mothers/Fathers with babies in strollers also use them, for example.  That said, I don't think this particular store is covered by any ADA elevator requirement due to its size (not enough floors or SF)

Chef Sawyer had mentioned a gourmet donut shop as a potential wish-list future idea of his awhile back... Space is small. He's got two places just next door... Just a thought...

We could also use some ice cream/froyo...also small footprint

No cones about it
