April 15, 201510 yr Plus an awesome comic book shop on the 2nd floor of the Grand Arcade. Not to derail the thread, but I'm guessing you are referring to Super City Comics, Cards, & Collectibles. My buddy's father owned that place. Glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers it. Truly was an awesome store!
April 16, 201510 yr ^My best friend worked at Super City in the mid 90's while we were in high school...fun times!
April 23, 201510 yr http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/2015/04232015/index.php Landmark Planning Commission agenda for Corner Alley renovations. I like the direction this is headed with the garage glass doors to open the building weather permitting
April 25, 201510 yr Nice. I just wish the city would not allow parking on Euclid between public sq and CSU
June 30, 20159 yr I noticed last night that construction has started on the Corner Alley. I'll try to take some pics of it after work today. Edit: from Tuesday night
June 30, 20159 yr Has anyone heard anything about Mabel's? I'm surprised there hasn't been any noticeable activity... That's a big gap on E4, which was convenient for SportsCenter.

Just this Scene article from about a month ago. It says Augustish: http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/05/27/first-draft-of-mabels-bbq-menu-sees-light-of-day
September 11, 20159 yr Corner Alley re-opens. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/09/11/corner-alley-downtown-readies-for-re-opening-day
September 15, 20159 yr MRN spends $2.2 million to revamp Corner Alley downtown Mary Lessick, director of sales and marketing with the Corner Alley, said the owners decided to renovate now to get it done in time for the upcoming Cavaliers season and the 2016 Republican National Convention. They also wanted to bring the property up a notch to compete with other venues on East Fourth, a popular district that was the face of Cleveland on ESPN SportsCenter broadcasts during the NBA Finals. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20150915/BLOGS16/150919888/mrn-spends-2-2-million-to-revamp-corner-alley-downtown
September 15, 20159 yr I've loved the Corner Alley concept since it 1st opened on 4th Street 11 years ago which actually gave bar-goers something to do rather than just sitting on their arses, drink and watch sports... But while I don't hate the new design, I'm also not in love with it. I got a chance to step inside the new version a few days ago... The new Corner Alley design works more for their gigantic, 2-level, college-friendly establishment that crowns Uptown in University Circle, but it leaves me cold at the original downtown location. The new 4th Street CA goes with the sparse look: bare walls, concrete floors and exposed pipes. The 2 aspects of the updated CA I do like are the bold, striking colors -- esp the gold and black -- and the expanded outdoor Euclid seating which, sadly, thet'll barely get to use this season with fall/winter closing in. I loved the warmth of the old place. Yes carpeting is a beatch to keep clean, esp with CA's reliably heavy traffic, but it added a more homey/welcoming aspect to the place. I liked the 4th Street Grill portion that fronted on E. 4th. The new joint has the bar pushed out to the front window, making the place feel more like just another bar (as if we don't have enough in "New Cleveland") as opposed to the trendy/hip restaurant + bowling + games... and a bar CA used to be. I loved the circular bar in the middle of the old CA. Having applauded everything the Maron's have done for Cleveland development, I kinda feel guilty about even mildly criticizing anything they do... But the change of CA isn't necessarily an upgrade...not to me, anyway. However, I am glad to see it reopening.
September 16, 20159 yr Checked out the opening this past weekend. Pretty great inside. It needed a refresh and I love the new floor plan and decorating. The old floor plan squished the smallish bar up against the bowling lanes and the entire lower dining level was reliably vacant by 9:30pm while people jockeyed for space on the upper level. It was just a bad use of space. Now the bar is much larger and the lanes aren't so cramped.
September 16, 20159 yr Rendering (first?) of Symon's Mabel's BBQ exterior went up today on the Mabel's BBQ Facebook page
September 18, 20159 yr Glad to see motion on the Mabel's project - from outward appearances it seems to have been taking an unusually long time.
September 18, 20159 yr ^ yeah by the time it opens itll probably be 1.5 yrs out from when Symon gained control of the space. Thats short compared to the pushing-3-years for hansa Haus brewery in Oh City and Arcadian in D-S. Interesting, it looks more like a diner than a bbq joint. I like it Yes the sign has that iconic mid-century urban diner look. Like the diner scenes in TCM's 'up all night' station breaks. But the sign rendering is nothing more than the La Strada' sign - that has always been there - but in a different color , and La Strada was decidedly not a diner. Just this week....
September 19, 20159 yr the new Corner Alley really makes that corner come alive as the place literally spills out onto the street (in nice weather)
September 19, 20159 yr My understanding is Symon ran into unexpected issues with the space he had to work with and the necessary kitchen set-up for what he wanted to do. Apparently there was a point where they debated scrapping the plan entirely and putting in another B.Spot. Very excited to see they made it work.
September 19, 20159 yr That's the historic old Woolworth's 4th Street entrance, and I believe the main parts of the sign are sign original. Here's some samples of similar from other Woolworth Stores, and one CLE 4th St original snapshot I found on the web.
December 4, 20159 yr Another facade incident. http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/oh-cuyahoga/debris-falls-from-e-4th-street-building-overnight
December 4, 20159 yr In the time I lived and worked on East 4th, I saw several chunks of facade fall. I watched a piece of facade almost cream a group waiting outside Pickwick and Frolic once, missed them by a few feet. Never seen anyone actually get hit, though.
February 22, 20169 yr I am surprised to see the historic "woolworth's" marquee down I hope it is just down for repairs to incorporate the new restaurant name
February 27, 20169 yr ^they had employee orientation this past week. Looks like an early April opening, although date is not set in stone.
February 27, 20169 yr ^they had employee orientation this past week. Looks like an early April opening, although date is not set in stone. It's possible that the fire at Lolita has affected their schedule.
March 8, 20169 yr this scaffolding is down, new doors and windows are up & most of the interior looks to b done , and the only word is... Wow ...and the exterior signage isnt even up
March 9, 20169 yr A peek inside Mabel's: http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/03/michael_symons_mabels_bbq_snea.html#incart_river_home
March 10, 20169 yr ^I kinda like it: plain but hip and cool at the same time... Not totally unlike the feel of the B-Spot at Eton, though a little more open/less cramped. It is a barbecue joint and not Lola, after all.
March 10, 20169 yr a terrific addition to the CLE dining scene more on Mabels http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2016/03/09/sneak-peek-mabels-bbq-approaching-the-finishing-line

The view looking down at the long tables from a loft reminds me of views of the original Central Market -- the one that was demolished in 1948 after 100+ years of operations. April 5, 20169 yr Things to do if you want a thread locked and pruned: 1. Make off topic posts. 2. Decide you HAVE to add onto those off topics even though the discussion is days, even weeks old. *cough*E Rocc*cough* clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

Sad to see, hopefully they can bounce back sooner than later.

Already starting to bounce back. Greenhouse and is being worked on by a new spot coming in the fall and Goma that replaced Chinato is now open. That leaves Lola. Zocalo is staying open it seems but wont be as busy so I would prefer it close for a new concept. It had a great run.
January 31, 20232 yr E. 4th to become a DORA. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/clevelands-east-fourth-street-set-revamp-open-container-district
January 31, 20232 yr Here is another article for people that don't subscribe to Crains. https://www.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2023/01/cleveland-may-get-its-first-outdoor-drinking-area-on-east-fourth-street-with-swings-and-canopy.html
January 31, 20232 yr I think it’s great they are trying to move the valet station - I’m assuming the intention is to further pedestrianize the street. I’d love to see the pedestrian zone expanded even further - close Euclid to private vehicles from Public Square to East 6th. Buses and deliveries only. When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?
January 31, 20232 yr This would be perfect with the larger vision of the "ballpark village" around the stadiums. Imagine they eventually expand the DORA zone from E4th to RMFH and Progressive Field with some new bars in between and everything. Could be a really fun time on game days!

You're making it sound like New Orleans with the whole place smelling of stale beer in the morning. Maybe not though; Cleveland is breezier than NOLA. Remember: It's the Year of the Snake
January 31, 20232 yr Man, this city has so much potential for creating some very interesting downtown neighborhoods. What areas? Creating a landbridge to physically connect the lakefront with the Mall and the Warehouse District. How about Bedrock's plans for developing the hillside behind Tower City down to the river. Imagine actually connecting the two peninsulas, the river and downtown with housing/restaurants etc. on a large scale? And finally expanding E. 4th. to seamlessly connect with the sports facilities via a Ballpark Village. Who wouldn't want to live in any one of those neighborhoods done right? So much potential here. And developing these areas is not just building in a vacuum. These areas already have a reason for existing... the lake, the river/peninsulas and the existing early 20th century structures alongside modern sports facilities. The framework already exists. Just bring it to life.
February 1, 20232 yr City Council approves DORA. https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/council-committee-approves-funding-plan-to-revamp-iconic-east-4th-street

February 1, 20232 yr Only funding was approved, legislation to approve the DORA still has to be passed. Which I feel like is a formality because why approve money for something you don't want the city to have.Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk That's fair, but the renovations *can* happen without the DORA designation. Certainly looks like that's where it's headed, just not yet.
