^I think someone noticed it in the old renderring for the convention center behind tower city along the river.  IIRC, it was at the corner of Huron and Ontario.  You could kind of pick the letters out in the renderring.

I really like the Dave and Busters/ESPN Game Zone would be a great space for the 1st 1-2 floors of May Co. in a couple years.  Besides the home games of 3-5 Sports year round downtown (counting arena football and AHL Hockey), and decent and rising student population of CSU and University Circle, there should be a fairly steady draw (and how about all those from the conventions of medical mart!! ;)  ).  Of course marketing would be the key, but it started out right (like discounts to local college students for the first 1-2 years, promotionals at the games, advertising, etc.)  I see no problem for something for like that to be successful.  Not to mention, Cleveland's diehard fandom--which should be a staple.

clvndr, if you have ideas or insights into what is happening in Cleveland, then by all means share them.  But from what I've seen of your input here, your stock in trade is rants, usually ill informed.  You're certainly allowed to post them here, but we're also allowed to call them bunk.  It's a forum, afterall.

But yeah, I think something like a Target wouldn't be a bad idea for the May space, and I'd love to see more small scale projects that would be less risky than the big swing for the fences Peshts.

FYI, Theresa's is open. Haven't been yet.

I don't remember seeing any definite opening date for the Bang & Clatter, but I just saw this audition notice for their first show in the new space, so it looks like they will be opening by March 14, 2008.

http://www.fredsternfeld.com/thisishowitgoes.htm

Bang and Clatter is also going to design review at the city this week.

Wow, March is pretty soon. I had no idea they had made any progress on the interior of that space... though I have noticed some exterior work has been done. It'll be great to have something in this neighborhood besides another bar/restaurant!

when i got a peep inside about 2 weeks ago, it only looked clean and gutted. However, I haven't seen the door open recently...

Is this the pizza place? I thought it wasn't supposed to open til next year some time.  Where exactly is it?

It's on Euclid right by Jimmy Johns - they were moving slowly then all of a sudden over night had most of the interior done.

A September PD article (http://blog.cleveland.com/pdextra/2007/09/bang_and_the_clatter_theatre_c.html) actually said they would be opening the Cleveland space with a show running Feb. 1 through March 1. Maybe they're skipping this first show. According to the article, the second show would run March 14 through April 12, part of an 8-show series between now and the end of 2008.

Perhaps the show I referenced is the second show.  It is the first audition notice I saw for the new theater, so I thought it must be the first show.  Maybe the first show was pre-cast or I just missed the announcement.

Wow.  Anyone know their hours?

^Great news on Theresa's i'd say i'd swing by tonight to check it out but i will be at the warehouse district holiday tour... also re: Bang and Clatter, when they came through Gateway design review about 2-3 weeks ago they indicated they wanted to open in February, which i find pretty agressive as i'd seen it about a day earlier and as stated earlier in the thread it is only gutted and cleaned. However, i saw the floorplan and it is essentially a wide open space, so we shall see...

They claim "late", but don't know if that's weekdays, weekends? every day? It is their first week, and having no sidewalk might encourage them to wait a bit.

I got lunch at Theresa's on friday and the food was pretty good, I had an Italian sub. The place was suprisingly crowded considering the construction outside. They have a sit down area as well as a counter of pizza by the slice and subs. The menu and prices reminded me of Geppetto's.

The pizza by the slice is good.  And huge.

How does this compare to Vincenza's, the king of pizza by the slice in Cleveland, imho. Besides Bar Cento, Vincenza's is the only decent pizza to be had around here!

The few co-workers of mine are saying Theresa's is good, but by the slice, I gotta go with vincenza's

Theresa's pizza will be open till 11ish on weekdays, and maybe midnight on weekends.  It sounds like they are taking a bit of a wait and see attitude, but they want to try to capture some of the aftershow crowd from HOB.

Other news:

Saigon has a "Now Hiring" sign in the window.

La Strada has a construction front over its storefront and inside work is progressing.

Bang and Clatter has a new banner above its storefront.

The south side of Euclid should be done in a couple of weeks, making access to that whole area a bit easier.  The pavers won't be going in until the weather warms up some, though.

I ate dinner at Teresa's Pizza tonight....They have a nice little set up and a great location.  I had a good convo with the part owner -- sounds like they will be starting to advertise this week.  He also said without advertising, they've been doing better than expected, especially at lunch.  Good to hear.  Check it out if you haven't already.

  • 5 weeks later...

I really hope Teresa's does well (and if you are an original east sider, Teresa was the daughter of Auggie), love the menu.  It's nice to have a neighborhood pizza place type spot downtown... and they deliver which is fantastic.

Also, if you get a chance take a peak at Saigon across from Lola.  It is REALLy coming along nicely.

There was also some work going on with the fire escapes on the Krause Building.

Gotta chime in on Teresa's to say that I've been there four times already, and the food and service are exceptional. They have now installed multiple big-screen TV's tuned to ESPN, CNN, and MSNBC (but with the sound turned down, so you can enjoy your lunch in peace if you wish), and there is a new ordering system that connects the bar area to the front counter for ticket printouts, making those quick lunchtime orders that much quicker.

Today was the first day I was in there that they really weren't that busy, although I think the cold, blustery weather kept a lot of people inside. I've mostly been ordering the Italian meat lunch special (sub, chips, & a non-alcoholic drink for $5.99), and the taste and quality of everything has been wonderful. Here's hoping everything goes well for them in the future -- those fresh-made potato chips are downright addictive...

So supposedly MRN has "something" lined up for the space between Teresa's and the WT Grant Entrance. Has anyone heard anything? I heard "food".

How about the large space just to the north of Saigon and to the south of Pickwick?  That is a very large space and is the only thing left to lease out. Anyone heard anything?

I haven't heard anything, but unless I missed something, there are a few other spaces beside the ones mentioned above.  There are the two just mentioned, there is a space between Theresa's and City Blue, and the ground floor of the Sincere Building.  That last one is the space I am really looking forward to seeing filled, but good to hear rumors of something for one of the Euclid spaces.

MRN does not control the space on the 1st floor of the sincere building... and from what i hear it's size is a challenge.  I've heard grumblings that they are trying to buy the building that volk's is in to be able to expand that space.

i thought that was the compromise between G&Z Real Estate LLC (Gus Georgalis - of pinnacle fame - and Nick Zarnas) and MRN.  MRN wanted to take this building by eminent domain and create apartments, and G&Z wanted to buy it and make it condos.

my understanding was the final agreement allowed 14 condos on the upper floors, developed by G&Z, in exchange for MRN retaining ownership/leasehold of the first and basement levels for future retail.

it was pretty murky when it all went down in 2002, so the details could be a bit off, but I think MRN controls the first floor (which would also explain why the newer windows and wood treatments look exactly like flannerys and corner alley).

from what i understand (and i could be wrong) MRN doesn't have anything to do with that building.  I know that MRN has some easments in place with the WT Grant building that give them control of the 1st floors of that property (Jimmy John's, Teresa's, Bang and Clatter, etc.)... but I wasn't aware of such an arrangement in the sincere building.... i will try to double check this week.

And while we're on it, how is "10th Floor Interactive" on the second floor of a building that doesn't even have 10 floors?

Pope, not everyone can be math geniuses like you.

i just did a quick check on the cuyahoga county recorders site, and there are a number of easements / deeds between g&z and mrn.  i believe that this document is the pertinent one:

you may have to download it and go through all 10 pages to actually see the descriptions of the basement and first floor areas.

minor update, flooring work (apparently) has begun on the Blackfin Saloon/Old Cafe 56 site.

I've heard that E.4th will be doing some decorating this summer. Look for a lot more vegetation.

^Interesting- can't wait hear more/see it.  Nothing wrong with some greenery (when it's not in some useless plaza).

So, I was downtown yesterday for a seminar and met a girlfriend for lunch. We ate at Corner Alley, which got pretty crowded for lunch. The service was great, and I had no complaints about the food but it was nothing to rave about.

did you bowl a few frames?  i'd love to be able to bowl on lunch...

Anyone know how Vivo is doing?

They reopened last year after a kitchen fire, and from what I can tell they do pretty brisk business.  Why?

i really like vivo and try to make it there at least "once a quarter" anyways, and typically when we go it's on a weekend and they seem to be pretty crowded... but i have no idea what their bottom line looks like.

^^Just wondering.  The original one in Chicago appears to do gangbusters.  I just hope they also do well in Cleveland.  Ever since they closed the V lounge, I got a little nervous.

I also wonder if they have benefited from E 4th, which would be my hunch.

it looked like the v lounge was open again a few weeks ago. did anyone else see this?

v lounge was/is a great space, but had such an inconsistent schedule (closed for private parties or no reason at all), that i could never count on it being open the nights i wanted to go in.

I was just down in V-Lounge for New Years Eve.  It's a great space but from what I've heard, when it was open nightly a few years ago it started to attract the wrong crowd.  Hopefully they reopen it at some point with everything going on on E4th.

Growing with a Bang:  Cutting-edge Akron theater company opening second location near Public Square in Cleveland's East Fourth Street district

They're urban pioneers who live for the theater, and they're gaining the kind of momentum that Hillary or Barack would love.

At first, word of the free beer and wine given out at performances might have enticed audiences to check out the unprepossessing (OK, makeshift) theater upstairs in the Summit Artspace building in downtown Akron. But people keep coming back for more of the raw, unpredictable drama that co-founders Sean Derry and Sean McConaha began producing at Akron's Bang and the Clatter Theatre Company in October 2005...

^That article had a sidebar saying the first Cleveland show would open at the end of this month. Given the state of the space, I find that hard to believe. Maybe they're planning on using the space in half-finished form? That would be kind of fun, provided the heat is already installed. ;)

Here's the sidebar:

Very exciting!  Do we have any details on what the facade is going to look like?  It sounds like they're waiting to hear about tax credits before doing that work.  This could provide a strong visual link between Public Square and E. 4th.

Question, guys.

I'm moving to the apartment over Lola's at the end of the month and won't have a car.  Other than that market on W9, where can I get food that's walking distance.  Lol, I probably should have thought of this before signing the lease.  Any chance of a grocery store being built around town in the near future, because rent + college debt + law school debt = cheap food required.

Also, and this is completely off topic, but has anyone had any weird experiences in Wonder Bar?  I was with a friend there on Saturday and there was a strange incident involving the bartenders and servers virtually ignoring us despite the place not being busy whatsoever.  My buddy, who is black but absolutely ISN'T one of those annoying guys who finds everything racist, seemed a little upset and embarassed after we left having waited under 10 minutes (prompting me to wonder if he heard something  inappropriate).  But I left it alone and we had a blast at  the bar at the bowling alley and Flannerys, even got some numbers from some cute girls somehow...

BTW guys, working the attorney card really works.  Gotta use it more often

There is a grocery inside Reserve Square which is on E 12th.  It's not fancy but has a bit more selection than Constantino's.

As for Wonder Bar, there are a lot of staffing and management problems there which is too bad as I know the chef is trying hard to make this place a go.
