It's usually Thanksgiving weekend - haven't seen them update the website though.

You may want to call DCA - they get most of it together.

Ah, that's why I'd never heard of it!  I've never spent a single Thanksgiving in Cleveland!  But I think we are actually gonna be here this year.....

Gosh DocBroc you have so much to learn!

You need to check it out though, it incorporates the holiday parade, lighting ceremony, fireworks and entertainment throughout downtown (the arcade, tower city, e. 4th, public square etc.) as well as the Christmas story convention at the Renaissance.  I'm usually in for it, and kindof made it a goofy tradition to go.

We will definitely have to go!  I looooooove holiday stuff.

Is La Strada open yet?

not as of last night...

I was hoping against hope they would open this week.  I need a new place for the few lunches out I'm eating!

Oh boo.  Okay, thanks!

all i can say is, for lack of a better expression... they look ready to pop.  Like an 8 year old last night I jammed my face against the window.  Decorations are on the walls, linens are on the tables, and booze is behind the bar... I would suspect it's any day now.

Haha, funny you should say that - the friend I am taking to E. 4th tomorrow is 9 months pregnant and "ready to pop" any day!  I just wish La Strada were open cause that's the restaurant she said sounded the best to her from the E. 4th website.....  Zocalo it is I guess.

Any sense from your peeping tom episode what the "market" component is going to look like?

from everything i understood, the "market" isn't much more than a couple carts that come out of the vertical sliding door to the right of the entrance.  I have no idea when that is supposed to start.

From this weeks Scene.

We know it will be soon (thanks to McCleve's peering), but what day!

Terry Tarantino might open his new East Fourth Street restaurant, La Strada (2050 E. Fourth St., 216.861.3663), as early as this week. Tarantino, who also owns La Dolce Vita (12112 Mayfield Rd., 216.721.8155), said that he is shooting for a soft opening of lunches, now that inspections have been completed. "The food will be a combination of the five Mediterranean cuisines I love," says Tarantino. "Spanish, Moroccan, Turkish, Italian and Greek." A custom-built wood-burning grill will cook off items such as shish kebab, Moroccan chicken, lamb-and-beef skewers and cheese-stuffed artichokes. Architect Joe Hanna's goal was to design a space, according to Tarantino, "that gives the feeling of dining outside at dusk - with a Fellini touch."

those cubes are actually pretty cool

Who is that person?  :wtf:

Who is that person? :wtf:

Poor confused MTS.  McLovin was the Fake ID name of a character in the movie Superbad.  That's a picture of the actor who played said character. :)

I'm so out of it today.

I had no idea who that was, either. Never saw the movie.

Back on topic, please.

FYI la strada is now open

OMG GET OUT

Went to La Strada for lunch today, couldn't wait.  Dining companion got the shrimp risotto, I got the pesto pasta and we split a Greek pizza.  A little heavy on the wallet ($46 for 3 dishes, nothing to drink but water) but the service and food were great.  LOVE the interior, very cool inside, I believe they were projecting Zorba the Greek on the wall.  Very Moroccon style interior and still very few diners.  I was pleased how quick the service was - new restaurants often have some gap in service due to still working out the kinks and I thought it was very smooth.  The owner or manager appeared several times to ask how everything was and at one point brought around sample pizzas for customers to try a slice of (if we had known that we wouldn't have ordered the pizza, which we couldn't finish even though it was very small, a good "personal" size for lunch).

No bar setup yet but they are working on that they said.

Oh, man, that sounds so much better than my Case cafeteria lunch :(

thanks for the update RNR!!!  Sounds yummy!

That restaurant sounds so delicious. I can't wait to get back in town and try it.

Zocalo put up a new sign the other day. Also it looks like work on the new coffee shop is moving along.

Zocalo is getting a whole new storefront...

Greenhouse Tavern has new signage in their windows too...looks like construction/remodeling inside is picking up

I recently moved back to Cleveland from Los Angeles. One of my favorite developments has been the E. 4th neighborhood, which I have been watching closely. Do we know about the status of Blackfinn? Their website is still up for a Cleveland location. Also, I wonder what will be done with the corner floorspace at Prospect and E.4th, across from Flannery's. Thanks. Can't wait to try La Strada.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but the Greenhouse Tavern website now says Valentines Day 2009 as their opening, and it appears from passing it that they're moving quickly.

^Excellent progress photos on their site too.

Went to La Strada Saturday night before the cavs game...very nice cuisine...strongly recommend.

The East 4th website says that they are gearing up to start selling condos on the street. Does anyone know which buildings? I'm very excited to hear this. Downtown lacks affordable condo options.

Lacks affordable condos?  What do you consider affordable for the downtown market?

I was referring to prices similar to the Grande Arcade and Pointe at Gateway. Basically condos at 200k or less. Projects like the Avenue District are great but even with the tax abatement and special financing they are still out of reach for many people.  I guess I'm kind of assuming that at least some of the condos on 4th street will be at 200k or less.

There are still plenty of affordable condos under 200k in the East Ninth Propect area as Mayor McCleveland pointed out in a recent relocation assistance thread.

I just saw a condo at the Pointe at Gateway for $119,000.

There are plenty of affordable condos in the area, the problem is that they are all located in a single building. Also on a related note, I recently saw condo listings for the Perry Payne building on Superior. They were all around 200k or less.

Well which is it?  We lack affordable condos or lack affordable condos outside of one area?  :wtf:

Yeah I guess I went in two directions there! I was saying that the gateway area lacks affordable condo options. If you don't like the Pointe at Gateway you're out of luck.  In regards to Perry Payne, I just saw the listing online and figured I would throw the info out there.

  • 1 month later...

So just had a look at a couple things...

1.  The Euclid Block apartments above the Corner Alley are "officially" open, and leasing.  There are currently 4 people living there.  They are releasing units for rent in blocks as they finish them up.  Of course currently getting in and out of the building is a little bit of a mess.  If you've seen the entrance (between Corner Alley and Pickwick) you understand... They should recieve their elevator in about two weeks and are working out some design issues for the new storefront, which will serve as both the entrance to the Euclid Block Apts, and the east 4th offices... but this space should be wrapped up hopefully within the next 6 weeks or so. Again there are about 65 or so units in this place primarily 1 bedrooms... so if you're looking for a 1 bedroom you might want to call the E. 4th office and check it out.

2.  Signage for the Erie Island Coffee Co. has been approved.  Nothing thrilling, but it's nice and I think the coffee shop in general is a great fit on the street.  The storefront panel is made of similar materials and construction to both the saigon and fredrick at 4th signs.  It will be navy with various text.  There will also be a horizontal protruding sign off the north side of the storefront with the Erie Island ship logo, which will be washed with flood lights, it is not a backlit sign like many others on the street.

3.  Greenhouse Tavern... first, for those as excited about the opening of this place as I am, I flat out asked Jonathon if he thought he had any chance of opening in time for valentine's day as was once announced... he smiled and said "only in my mind's eye".  As you can see from the latest progress photos on the website there is a lot of work left to do. This is just my opinion but I can't see this place opening before late march at the earliest.  That being said, I think this will be hands down the best storefront on the street.  They will clean up the existing facade a bit, but for the most part it remains the same.  The exception being is the "Cort's" signs are coming down and will be replaced with glass to help illuminate the interior space.  The signs will be incorporated in the interior as they stick with their "reuse/green" theme.  It would be kind of difficult to describe the sign, and I'm not sure I would do it justice... so I'll leave that as a little treat for you to discover on your own when it goes up.  I think everyone is going to be very, very pleased with this addition to the street.

Wow, thanks for the update!  Can't wait for the Greenhouse, but you residents of the neighborhood must be pretty excited about the coffee place.  Let's hope it keeps decently long hours.

how about the fact that the greenhouse is going to be open for BREAKFAST, lunch, and dinner.... SEVEN days a week.  THAT is pretty exciting.

Those apartments sound really nice from the description on the website!  Pretty reasonably priced too!

Wow, breakfast and lunch seven days per week?!  That's huge.  Especially on Sunday when so many other places on 4th are closed.  Can't wait for this place.

Seriously. And not only that, but was he standing on some sort of an incline the whole time? Or is his sense of balance slightly off??

Every one of his video's is like this.  We're no longer in 1990, ditch the hat(s) already...sheesh.
