Hey, lets do it!

the building stock is gone...

Great pic.  Now all we need is a real dive bar to complement E.4th.  Not a knock on it, I love E.4th.  I'm just asking for something real bare bones.

unfortunately... rathskeller and otto moshers left in the early mid / nineties, right before the movement really started to gain momentum to get the street back on track.  Shame, they had been in their original locations since the late 1800's.  They would have been such a great addition to the new things going in.

So does that mean there were 2 otto moshers downtown, or is the one in Playhouse Square where the old one moved too??

^ no, i think just the one. as mayor mccleveland said and i can ditto otto moshers moved to playhouse square from there in the mid 90's.

rathskeller moved too - that one was my very fav hangout. you could watch them make tasty corned beef sandwiches right in the window, so it drew you right in. also, the clientele was extremely diverse, another plus. and you could always go in and have a few bee...i mean pepsi's, even if you were underage. i think the last time i went in there in its original location was just after 'the jake' had opened.

forget I said anything

It would be definitely nice to get some retail here, even if it's "just" a bookstore. Retail would certainly help to make it even more of a destination area.

well they aren't going to put a "mega book store" in east 4th and all throughout the euclid arcade so why don't we just drop it.

amost right!  Still no mention of public transportation!  Mr. Warren, since when does downtown Cleveland have declining office rental?

East Fourth Street entertainment renaissance blossoms

Posted by mnorman May 17, 2009 00:01AM

When Nick Kostis dreamed of bringing a classy night on the town to Cleveland's East Fourth Street, the classiest thing going was a triple cheeseburger. There were wig shops. Pawn shops. And, yes, a Wendy's on the corner.

But East Fourth offered something more: personality, geography, hospitality.

The buildings and quaint storefronts made it feel like something out of an old movie. It connects Prospect and Euclid avenues. And most of all, the 40-foot-wide-by-425-foot-long street makes for a cozy yet buzzing walkway.

More at http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2009/05/east_fourth_street_entertainme.html

I like what they said about connecting East 4th and the Warehouse District. I already see many people walking back and forth and if more people start walking between the two it could really energize a large portion of downtown.

I just read that in the PD. I love East 4th. It could spur a lot of development in the surrounding areas, ie warehouse district, but people have to feel that its safe. Maybe get a 2 cop foot patrol, 24/7 throughout the area. Be proactive instead of reactive.

Well it sounds like McCleveland's mystery chef is Zach Bruell...I can't wait to see what he comes up with.

Didn't Barnes & Noble have plans to build  a megastore across from CSU (wholly separate from the CSU bookstore)? Is that idea still on the table? If so, the area from Public Sq to the E 20s couldn't support two.

See the CSU thread.

I don't buy that. 2 diff neighborhoods; 2 distinctly different clientele groups.  I really don't consider E. 20th "downtown" in the truest sense.

Very nice article and a surprise for the PD: actually pointing out something good downtown and in Cleveland for a change.  E. 4th is gem that keeps on giving.  The Marons are my kind of developers: quiet, dogmatic and steady... That said, I'm surprised the article didn't mention the Corner Alley, which I think really solidified the neighborhood attracting a diverse crowd to a different kind of venue on a more steady basis than most bars or restaurants... The article also didn't talk much about astounding residential growth/factor on E. 4th.  It's truly a neighborhood as opposed to just being an 'entertainment district.'

I too am also excited about the prospects of connectivity with WHD Tower City and, perhaps, Playhouse Sq.

Ha.  In actuality that is NOT the restauranteur that I heard (though they are of the same caliber).  Which is why I try not to post things unless I can get some sort of confirmation.  So I will be very interested to hear an announcement, and see who it is.  Perhaps they are talking to multiple people.

I wish he would open up something in my kitchen!  I wouldn't charge him rent at all!

Now if only Ari could get his hands on some of the properties on Prospect between 4th and Ontario...

SW?  South West or Sherwin-Williams?

What is even between there?

agreed.  The unfortunate part is that those buildings are all owned by greedy speculators.  They have about zero interest in doing anything with them, and they are holding out for a kings ransom.

Punch, currently there is the building with the black granite facade, owned by some speculators out of california, there are also the "family sportswear", and "goldfish" buildings (beautiful building stock), and now that the greater heights academy is gone, I'm assuming that building is available as well.

^^That's not punch. haha

And c'mon tedders, you should know what's there, that's you're avatar!!

Developers have to be salivating at that corner parking lot across from Flannery's too...who owns it?

damn punch and tedders with the same avatar...  :)

the lot in front of harry buffalo is owned by the same "investors" (L&R Group) who own the black facade building next to it.

Mayor are you cock-tailing again?  Liquid lunches?  lol :|

Here you go Mayor McCleveland, one of my puppies, Danny Boy

I've heard that Rocco (chef at Fahrenheit) is looking to open another restaurant, but in Tremont.  Could be 4th though.

I'm pretty new on here so sorry if its obvious and i'm missing it, but why is McCleveland called Mayor?

I assumed it was a takeoff on Mayor McCheese from McDonaldland.

Yes, that's why I started calling him "the Mayor".  It just stuck.

Hell I've given almost all the regulars here a "nick name".  MayDay, "that bitch", ColDayman, "that evil bitch"; David, "that bitter bitch"; ProkNo5, "that stalker bitch", rob, "that sweet and innocent bitch";, Doc Broc, "that media hog bitch"; RnR, "that foodie bitch"; Punch, "that neurotic bitch", peachtreecity, "that country bitch", DanB, "that cantankerous bitch"...LOL

.....back to East 4th!

Does anyone have any idea when the ice cubes will go away?  This is as bad as still having Xmas lights on your house!  :x

Thats what I thought was there, diddly squat.  I don't come into 4th from that side of prospect too much so I forget whats over there.  I just recalled that it seemed pretty desoloute for what is right next door.

I know it's frustrating, but give it some time... these things have a way of feeding off eachother.  Let's not forget about 4 years ago East 4th street didn't remotely resemble what it is now.  I know everyone thinks East 4th sprouted up overnight, but plans were in the works for that street for a LONG time before construction crews showed up.

Very soon. I was told that they will be putting the flowers back in very soon (next week or so). They've been growing them from seed at a local nursery. You don't want to put them in too early or the frost can wipe out thousands of dollars worth of plants.

I think that is another example of why this is so successful.  It did not open with a bang, had everyone from Greater Cleveland show up for the first year, then drift off to the next big thing.  One store opens, lots of free press, then six months later another store opens, lots of free press, lots of return visitors to check out the new place, six months later......

The key is continual growth.  I dont think we should settle on a product.  As more and more growth and press takes place, there should be more room for development.  They have done a great job of being creative, and need to continue to do so in order to be unique.

I've envisioned a BYOB Movie Theater is a space around there, it's not something you see everywhere.  I've seen those around areas with similar feels (Old Town Alexandria).  They'd have an instant fan in me at least.

what about an ice cream / smoothie / deli place?  it would do really well in spring/summer with the post/pre-game Indians crowd and in the winter they could hopefully survive with some affordable food options, which there is not a lot of...

Hell to the Yes!  an old fashioned ice cream shop would be amazing, then in winter they could switch to warm weather beverages.

Isn't there a smoothie/health food type place in the Colonial marketplace on the Euclid side?  They are just never open in the evenings as far as I can tell.

Octane Cafe i think its called, next to Radio Shack, its only open lunches from 11 till 3 pm i believe.

Octane has really been going down the drain lately.  Most of the time the credit card machine doesn't work, or they don't have change for cash, or chicken for the wraps, etc.  Not sure what the deal is.

e.4 needs trees to create nooks.  i wonder how long it will take?  i remember speaking to mr. maron back in 2005 when i was at CSU about the lack of trees and he replied that it is an urban street.

even trees on wheels would be a huge improvement.

1.  The planters have been changed out.  :)

2.  I've noticed some activity in the bottom floor of the sincere building.  Looks like they have been repairing the columns, which could be a precursor to more activity.  I also noticed they started painting the inside of the windows to keep people like me to see what could be happening in there... that being said I haven't seen any work going on in about a week.  It seems like they've temporarily stopped.

3.  Most importantly... for all you architects, designers, artists, and otherwise creative types who always talk about wanting to "do something"... here's your shot.  There has been some funding obtained to create a new bike station in the garage just south of Harry Buffalo.  The funding allows for some public art on the space.  All are welcome to submit designs.  Deadline for entry is June 26.  Cash prizes for top 3 entrants of $1,000, $750, and $500... and obviously the chance to have your design implemented on the spot.  More information can be found here:

http://www.clevelandpublicart.org/artist-resources/competitions/bike-station-public-art

or here:

http://www.clevelandpublicart.org/files/competitions/pdfs/webcallforentries.pdf

Good luck to all who decide to participate!

Mayor any idea when the Bike Station is set to be completed?

i would assume soon.  The competition will be judged and winners decided on July 2nd.  Plans for the actual bike station are already complete.  Though I will try to find a more exact start date for you soon.

Do you have a link or drawings of what the bike station will look like?
