Wow - No Zocalo, Erie Island Coffee Co, Saigon, La Strada, or Greenhouse Tavern in that picture.

MayDay, is that the most recent picture you have of 4th?

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure.  When are they slated to open?

Found these photos of Chinato on flickr. Don't think they've been posted before:

Chinato Construction 12-16-2009

Good find, thanks.  They are spending some serious money in that space.  Looks like it's getting pretty close to finished.

MayDay, is that the most recent picture you have of 4th?

I doubt it, but it's probably his best.

From this picture, it looks like Chinato will be two stories...  Cool.

Construction

I wonder if it will be a "private room" and restrooms similar to greenhouse...

I thought I read somewhere that it would either be a club or bar in the future (meaning not at opening)

I'm sure I have something more recent; once we get a heatwave (you know, in the 30s) I'll try to get out and snap some more shots. Anyway, the finishes in Chinato look great - glad to see that key space finally getting filled!

I agree, Chinato looks nice, and will be a nice corner to have filled.  Speaking of key spaces getting filled, does anybody know what's going on at the opposite corner (across the street from the Corner Alley)?  Sorry if I missed it, but I couldn't recall or find discussion of what was going on there.

I think it is still only a staging area for other projects at this point.

I thought there was some litigation about that space... or was that Chinato?

no, that was the space, and it has been resolved, I just don't believe they've lined up a tennant yet.

So when we were talking about Blackfinn a while back, was that the Chinato space or this space?

Blackfinn was slated for the former cafe 56 space on the SW corner of 4th and Euclid across from Corner Alley

OK, thanks, that's what I thought.

That spot looks horrendous. If it was going to sit vacant this long, it would have been a prime candidate for the window makeover program.

what do ya'll think of using that^ space to sell a mix of used and new kitchen equipment with cooking classes to get/keep folks in the door.  know of any biz that employs this concept of mixing used and new to ensure wider ranger of price points and of course sustainability...?

Art will brighten Cleveland's bike station

The station, dubbed The Bike Rack, is on track for a spring 2010 groundbreaking, Cleveland City Planner, Marty Cader, reported, and a summer grand opening. The city is funding the build out of the 6,500 sq. ft. space, which will include indoor rack space for 50 bikes, men’s and women’s shower and locker rooms and a repair shop. Downtown Cleveland Alliance (DCA) will manage the operation and plans to hire a manager whose duties will include individual and corporate membership sales and services.

I saw that Chicago's bike station also offers bike tours of the city, and I was just thinking how great that would be here.  Downtown and Ohio City would make very nice tour routes, and after the Towpath Trail is completed, the Flats and Tremont would work well, too!

Here are some more pictures of the bike station from the planning commission site.

Are there any pictures of what the layout will look like inside the station?

the drawings from spring 2009 are available here:

i don't think these are final though.

Yes, it's going to be a private party room with seating for 45 people, plus a separate bar.

It sounds like the type of place I wouldn't be able to keep my wife away from. :)

I thought this post (from the District of Design thread) was important and well-researched enough to share here for future reference and easer finding.......

Geez... it amazes sometimes the blinding effect of East 4th street on people.  Doc Broc is right, East 4th street ABSOLUTELY has been piece mealed.  Actually East 4th Street has been in progress for over TWENTY years!  After thwarting an attempt to have the entire street demolished from the colonial arcade to May Co in the late 80's, the street and it's building were listed as a National Historic District, and placed on local landmarks in the early 1990's.  From there it went something like this:

1996:

Krause Building Renovation for Sissler Jewlers ($.1)

Buckeye Building Apartments - 36 units ($3.5)

1997:

Flannery's Irish Pub ($1.0)

Rennovation of E. 4th St building facades ($.8 )

1998:

Windsor Block Apartments - 52 units ($5.2)

Ferris Steak House ($1.2)

2001:

Commercial Building Apts - 35 units ($3.5)

2002:

Pickwick & Frolic ($4.0)

2004:

E. 4th St. Streetscape ($1.5)

House of Blues ($12)

2005:

Sincere Building Condos - 14 units ($3.0)

Frederick / Graves / McRory Bldg Apts - 37 units ($2.5)

2006:

Corner Alley ($6.2)

2007:

Lola ($1.0)

Zocalo

2008:

Saigon ($.5)

La Strada

2009:

Erie Island Coffee

Greenhouse Tavern

Euclid Block Apartments

2010:

Chinato

street still in progress....

So as this relates to district of design, honestly it doesn't have to be done all at once, it will have to have a steady "stream" of work.  Maybe it starts this year with the renovation of the 13th/Euclid building and the UDC and an amish shop.  Next year it's another anchor restaurant to pair with Bricco and Mowen and the e. 14th streetscape.  2012 it's the allen and the addition of Mowen.... and then one day someone walks along and says "My god, I haven't been over here in years, they must have done this all at once!"

  • 1 month later...

Does anyone know if Chinato's is planning to put up a sign that juts out, like most of the other restaurants on the street have?  It's sort of a trademark of the East 4th district and would be seen from a distance. Understated is usually good, and it looks quite classy, but in this particular stretch it would enhance the streetscape if Chinato's joined its neighbors and came out with a sign that stands out; the uniform sinage era is in decline. The rest of the building doesn't look that great or classy such that minimalist signage would come off as a truly elegant look.

Yes.  Though there are a few hurdles they have to clear due to the historic nature of the building.

  • 2 weeks later...

On my morning jog noticed that there is a Zoup going in next to Jimmy John's on Euclid and there is a builder's permit in the window of the supposed Blackfinn spot on 4th and Euclid.  Windows are all painted white like when there was work going on at Chinato.

^I walked by myself today and noticed the whitewashed windows in the space formerly earmarked for Blackfinn AND on the former City Blue windows.  It looks like they were roughing out some walls inside from what I could tell.  I saw the permit on the window, but it didn't have any enlightening information.  I haven't seen anything on the Planning commission or Landmarks commission agendas.

Has anyone here heard anything about what's happening in these space(s)?

Can I ask what Chinato's is?

Lest we start another trend that will drive me to stick needles in my eyes, it's Chinato, not Chinato's.  Like Lola.  :)  And they have great food, if you're on 4th.

Thanks for letting me know! I don't go down West 4th very often! I never knew that :)

Not trying to drive you to stick needles in your eyes! Please don't! I knew it was Chinato but I was in a hurry to type that as I was leaving. Sorry :(

^^ Nor should you.  West 4th is really not much more than an alley.  Chinato is on EAST 4th ;)... perhaps the most happenin' street in town!

I went to Chinato for dinner Saturday night and it was excellent.

Gahhhhhh. I clearly cannot type today :/ I am pretty sure it's due to the rain!! aghhh! Haha.

Thanks, I meant EAST 4th ;)

This morning I quoted some "Manic Monday" lyrics, and a friend of mine mistook it for "Blame it on the Rain."  How often do you encounter two Milli Vanilli references in the same day?  Once in my life, that's how often.

Hahah. Thanks for making my day much more brighter with that video :)

I'm just glad a classy restaurant went into this space.  A couple years ago, some UOers were doubtful as to the positive use of this space due to the number of pillars, but Chinato appears to have pulled it off quite nicely.

I recall hearing a lead-in about the Bang and Clatter space on WCPN yesterday but didn't catch them actually talking about it.  I can't seem to find anything online about it right now though.

I half heard a lead in this morning about Bang and Clatter (or its director) and it was for the "Around Noon" program.  It was going to be a interview.  My take, from half listening, was that it had less to do with the space but what his next venture was going to be.  Maybe it will be in the old space.

^^^Let's hope!

There's some work going on at Zocalo as well.  They have taken out all the glass on the front facade.  Anyone know details of what they're doing?

^The facade is being completely rebuilt. I saw some of the plans, but it was awhile ago and to be honest I forget exactly what they're doing.  There were some code issues with what is there now, and essentially by the time it was going up it was considered temporary.

well interesting.... i found out what was going on at the corner of 4th and euclid.  and well... it's not a restaurant. it's not a bar. it's not a store.  And actually... it's temporary.  I'll be interested to see people's reactions when the announcement is made.  Very different.  But, at least it means we're getting a rebuilt storefront and an active space.

You're such a tease! :)

That dress is not appropriate Ms. Mayor.

Hmmmmm.... not a restaurant, not a store, not a bar.... keyword "temporary" and "active" - detective.gif

Anybody else want to say it?

^^^ Seems to be an awefully lot of work for a "temporary" space.
