They are eliminating 4 apartments. I dont know what I think about this location for them, seems like it could have been used for something better.

If I may go back in time....in this June 2007 article Ari Maron points out how wildly interested prospective tenants are for E. 4th.

If we name just 3 places (that are named in the article) that means he turned down 150 others 3-4 years ago.

150! According to him.

I would love to know what some of those were.

"For every deal we do we probably turn down 50 deals," he said. "It's got to be the right fit."

I dont like the thought of eliminating those 4 apartments.  As for the location, they had to move obviously, and this is a good front door into one of our entertainment districts.  Probably one where the visitor center will get more use.

I would hope that Positively Cleveland and The Sports Commission only take up store front space of the old City Blue store.  Then leave the rest of the corner for whatever the Cleveland store/restaurant is going to be.

This way they get the effect of being in the heart of the entertainment hub without compromising some valuable store front space.

(channeling QM again) Why?  There are plenty of available apartments downtown.  I bet they will get more for those apartments as commercial space than they would from rent.

Sometimes you have to look at a project and it's value and the how it plays in the larger scheme of the city.  Losing for apartments isn't going to hurt East 4 or downtown.  It's going to help other landlords.

There are plenty of available apartments downtown.

No there aren't, but I agree with the rest of your post.

What are the sizes of the apartments that will be lost?

Well, somewhere on one of these boards it was posted that most of the apartment buildings are mostly full.  So I would say that there are not "plenty" of available apartments directly in the heart of DT.

I do agree with you that addition through contraction is possible and this may be one of those cases.  And I actually think that Positively Cleveland at E4th is a good space for them.  I just happen to agree with 327 that there is a dearth of market rate apartments in DT.

At most it looks like 6,660 sq ft.  but most likely less than that.  So it really isnt a ton of space, but it is still some of, what i consider, the best apartments in DT.

According to its website, the visitors center closes at 5 on weekdays, and they have Saturday hours during summer only.  That's a little problematic on its own, but especially when they're located in an area geared toward nightlife and off-hours activity.  At the same time, I'm glad public square is replacing them with a 24-hour tenant.

I mean the sizes of each of the four apartments?

Perhaps moving to this location will encourage them to bump up or adjust their hours.

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, Positively Cleveland set to move

Positively Cleveland and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission will be moving to the southwest corner of Euclid Avenue and East Fourth Street. David Gilbert, who runs both organizations, said the nonprofit tourism organizations will take over the space that was used temporarily for “Bodies … The Exhibition,” the gallery that displayed plasticized and dismembered human bodies.

Glad to hear it. I think that area needs more offices (and retail) to balance with the housing and nightlife to keep a steady street life.

^Hopefully Positively Cleveland will extend their hours.  9-5 in the winter and 10-3 in the summer are some pretty plum hours.  They should go 10-7 all year.  Allow visitors coming into E4th to learn about other things going on in the city before dinner.

Work on the "Bike Rack" is starting to show.  They have the entrances from E4th framed and supports for the canopy above them done.  Lots of building materials on the inside too.  Really looking forward to this being completed.  Always thought of biking into work, but did not like the prospect of reeking for the rest of the day.

funny that you mention that, I just spoke with them today.  The project will be opening mid to end of april, with the exterior design work being completed at a later date.  It will have room for 50 bikes in a 1500 sf retail area.

The Chinato blade sign is up.

Looks great, a definite 'plus' for the street.

No pictures?!

No offense, but I think that sign is hideous.

I kind of liked the understated signage Chinato had before.  I haven't seen this new one yet, but the Marons are a little too obsessed with blade signs, IMO.

Then you would have hated E4th pre 1989...

I was thinking the same thing.

At one time most parts of downtown were nearly all blade signs.

I think the sign might help. It always looked dead down there cause there was no patio or sign. I havent seen the sign itself though so ill have to go check it out.

^Chinato does have outdoor seating running along the sidewalk.

East 4th or Prospect?

I actually really liked East 49th 4th in 1980s and early 1990s, especially the old Otto Mosers and Rathskaller.  Would kill to have them back on East 4th.  Which is not to say I don't appreciate what East 4th is today.

I don't really dislike blade signs, and agree they have a definite pedigree downtown, but the ones in that photo composed an organic accretion of signage by individual landlords and tenants over the years.  I find the Maron's insta-signage scape a tad precious and life style center-y.  Just a minor aesthetic opinion.  But not totally unimportant as they develop the new dining alley at Uptown.

EDIT: Thanks Hts guy, I really can't say I have much of an opinion about East 49th from the 1980s.

I would love to see that gap filled in on east 4th towards the prospect side and have them close that side down to traffic. Any chance of that ever happening?

^^^East 4th.

^^How about being able to acess Woolworth's from East 4th.  I cannot believe I am saying this but Woolworth's was pretty cool...would like to have it back.

Is there a picture anywhere of a 180 degree turn from this view?  I've only seen aerial photos of the Gateway pre-Q & the Jake.  Would love to see what was there from ground level.

Dont think anyone ever posted a picture, so here you go!

thanks for posting that. havent happened to see it in person yet but at least now I know what it looks like.

I don't mind the Chinato sign.  It's understated while informing travelers on both Prospect and E. 4th of its presence -- as opposed to merely glimpsing people dining inside a window at the corner across from uber-busy Flannery's.

Thanks for the signage photo mrclifton.  Unnecessary, IMHO, but looks perfectly fine.  Then again, the game is rigged when the photo also includes the hideous phoenix gateway totem thingy.

These are form a January 29 Dredgers Union website update, so 2.5months old. Maybe they've been seen already. Anyway, they give a look inside the old McCrory's(?) store.

Its a very cool space.  They had it open for arts installations and house music for the first engenuity fest.

^^ "the photo also includes the hideous phoenix gateway totem thingy."  We agree about the gateway totem... 'hideous' is the perfect adjective.

^ Great news about Dredger's Union progress.

This sign plan for the Positively Cleveland CLE+ Visitors Center at East 4th and Euclid was on Thursday's Landmark Commission agenda.....

Wait, they plan on putting up a sign on the corner? Wouldnt that be more of the place to put the restaurant/store sign that will go in the spot?

I don't like the "?" sign.  I get its purpose and functionality, but it looks tacky.  Par for the course I guess with that corner.

i like the LEDscroll

i like the LEDscroll

ditto

When will this all be completed??

they tweeted at me saying they would be moved in by the end of may, i assume that means most of the signage would be up

Par for the course I guess with that corner.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that corner either.  Total dissonance between the ground floor and the buildings above.  This could have been a nice opportunity to break up the giant horizontal band of brown, but I guess we'll have to live with uber-bland CLE+ signage and some trite banners.  At least the LEDs differentiate the ground floor facade a little bit.

And ugh, I forgot that there's one of those hideous totem things on Euclid too :(

Its funny cause I never notice those totem things when im walking over there. I must just block them out somehow

Oy! I thought those were placeholder icons on the mockup indicating they weren't sure of what the sign was ultimately going to be. They're actually putting giant question marks?

Haha, I've noticed the same thing.  I notice them in pictures, but hardly ever in person.
