CLEVELAND, Ohio – Downtown Cleveland is one step closer to getting the city’s first designated outdoor refreshment area, or DORA.

The Cleveland Planning Commission is set to approve the DORA on Friday, which would allow patrons on the East Fourth Street corridor to have alcohol in designated plastic cups while outside the bars and restaurants. Ari Maron, the owner and developer of East Fourth Street, said this is a part of a “holistic approach” to the address post-COVID challenges.

....

Maron said the DORA, if approved, would be a pilot that would only be at East Fourth Street. He said he hoped the DORA would expand to other parts of lower Euclid Avenue and Prospect Avenue.

Love this! Architecturly the street is already there. It just needs a couple of design features to add visual interest. It shouldn't cost much and the payoff could be exponentially better. About time.

did we ever get word on a timeline of the work they proposed as part of the turning E4th into an open container walkabout place?

Wondering the same thing. Anyone hear updates on this makeover?

  • 6 months later...

So the DORA was approved back in June, but CCC approved funding for the makeover back in February. Any recent news on this?

Anyone know anything about the DORA improvements?

Looks like Gabriel’s is closed…they did not have luck with either Indie or Gabriel’s…lets hope whoever picks this location up can come up with a winning concept.

This spot should return to the Greenhouse concept. Something like Heart of Gold but here, reignite the rooftop, bring back the greatest wings on earth, good fries, fun specials and boom you're back. The most recent concepts were bad and suited for the suburbs.

Good Company has got all of that minus rooftop now.

Another Good Company in that space open until midnight or 1 am would kill it.

I have heard the Marons are being problematic about how it will be run and managed and who is responsible for it… typical Cleveland property owners haha. We’ll see, hopefully they can work it out.

Not exactly East 4th, but Flight Social, in the former Chocolate Bar space, opens October 9th. The new space looks great.

How many places with the word "Social" in the name can we take?

I haven’t been to E 4th in a hot minute. Is it DORA yet?

No, not as of last week at least. But it’s only been 16 months since they announced it and in the meantime only dozens of other communities have successfully opened their DORAs - I’m a big Bibb supporter but stuff like this is mind numbing. Click that link and check out how many have been opened in the Columbus and Cincinnati metro areas… Akron/Canton and the Toledo region even appear to have more than we do.

Last I heard they were overdesigning the bollards. That was months and months ago.

If I remember correctly they did the same with public square, then ended up with very normal looking bollards. They should skip the first step and just put in normal looking bollards, exactly the same ones as were used at Public Square would be perfect. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I'm sure they'll push it through right as soon as it's too cold to enjoy being outside so we have to wait until next summer to actually enjoy the DORA 🤣

Interesting, E4th is on the linked map of DORAs, while Cedar-Lee, which opened last Friday is not.

I hope they will have merch for sale because people will buy it. Great looking logo and space.

Woah this completely came out of left field... ;) That's pretty unique and will be a cool addition to E 4th.

Yep you wanna buy now before all "Dugout" logos are clumsily replaced by "PROGRESSIVE."

Looks great, though I use that valet several times a month for the dining perfection that is Cordelia and it's so convenient. But still looks like, per floor plan, some version of valet pickup or drop-off will be in this space - when, originally, they were moving to Prospect for drop-off and Euclid for pickup (or vice versa).

At todays Landmark Commission meeting (East 4th Street Historic District), the new build "DORA Park" received its COA (project will need separate lighting approval later).  Discussions are currently ongoing with a couple of local ice cream brands who are interested in the location. The development team are working with the Cleveland Clothing Company to create a new "Cleveland sports legends" mural on the wall of the current Cordelia building. The same group is also behind The Yard in Willoughby so they have some experience with managing/programming outdoor spaces year round https://theyardon3rd.com/

DORAPark3-12-12-24.jpg

The roadway to the current valet drop off area is only ~150 feet into East 4th, however that represents almost a third of the block length that will now be fully pedestrianized.

There wasn't much discussion about the existing streetscape in the East 4th right of way, but hopefully this small section could be modified to remove/flatten the curb are move the bollards south to Prospect. Those small adjustments (and a potential Flannerys patio expansion onto East 4th) could really improve the entrance from Prospect.

I like this. I think a DORA will give the street a shot in the arm. Cool as it is it was getting a little tired lMO.
