November 1, 20231 yr I was looking back at old S&W articles and found this: "Lapine said Smith & Wollensky is working on a Downtown location that she could not yet identify but one that would be "bigger, better and stronger" than the Easton site." The Easton Space was 10,000sf. So if they are actually looking for more square footage, the Wood Co building wouldn't fit the bill being under 7,000sf. That was before removing the second level. Plans may have changed so I still think there's a chance it is it, but that really depends on whether they truly wanted bigger or were just throwing words out there.

So curious to know where this could be going. Can’t think of a large open retail space anywhere downtown. Maybe next to Speck?

Honestly I wouldn’t hate that. Could be cool to have like a “fine dining” corridor. Between Speck, the suspected Hank’s, and the suspected French restaurant across the street, it could be a fun to have a steakhouse next door! Although I guess there are also other good steakhouse options close by.

If it happens, my money is still on the Peninsula. But it’s been so long since we’ve heard any news on them reopening so 🤷🏼♂️
November 22, 20231 yr 'COME SEE FOR YOURSELF' Short North businesses and backers want to change the narrative around safety in the neighborhood No other Columbus firm has a stake in the Short North like the Wood Cos. The developer has invested hundreds of millions of dollars over decades to help transform the Short North from a neglected, crime-scarred neighborhood into a destination full of boutique hotels, trendy retailers, clubs, restaurants, art galleries and quirky shops. In fact, the family-owned company that Mark Wood now runs controls about 25% of the commercial space in the Short North, where High Street’s lighted arches act as a magnet for shoppers, diners and residents. “It’s in our DNA,” Wood said. “We’re not going anywhere and we’re gonna fight like hell to make sure that this only grows as a destination.” It’s an ongoing battle. Over the years, concerns about crime have surfaced again and again, harming the neighborhood’s reputation and worrying some about its future. This year, there were two fatal shootings in May that dominated newspaper headlines and TV news segments, as well as problems with underage drinking outside of bars and ATVs and motorcycles that raced up and down High Street, frustrating residents, visitors and business owners. A crackdown by Columbus Police followed, significantly cutting down on the number of incidents, said Police Commander Christine Nemchev, a veteran of the Short North who leads patrol units in the neighborhood. Violent crime in the neighborhood is down 37% compared to last year. “After two violent weekends in May, we took a very swift, significant and concentrated approach,” said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. “We think this response was the right response.” Waaaaaaay more below: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2023/11/21/short-north-crime-preception-reality-backers-wood.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

February 8, 20241 yr The Short North Has Grown into a $3.8 Billion Neighborhood Who shops in the Short North? Who works in the Short North? And how does our Arts District compare to the Arts Districts located in other cities? The Short North Alliance (SNA) set out to answer these questions last year through a comprehensive neighborhood market and consumer study, and the findings of the report are being unveiled this week. The study was conducted by JS&A Economic Development Consulting and Metris Arts Consulting. “The best thing that we can do as an organization when helping to provide support to the community, is to try and get information,” explained Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance. “So one of the things that we really wanted to do is to get a better understanding of what the picture looks like right now. There is a tremendous moment of growth for the entire region, and I think it’s important for us to be careful stewards for the neighborhood.” More below: https://columbusunderground.com/the-short-north-has-grown-into-a-3-8-billion-neighborhood-we1/ & https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/02/07/market-study-on-short-north.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

March 4, 20241 yr I was in the Short North over the weekend and the amount of development is truly remarkable. It had a big city vibe with lots of pedestrian traffic enjoying the retail and restaurant offerings. It is adjacent to the convention center which is a huge draw for out of towners to have their shows in Columbus. Cleveland should take a lesson or two from Columbus and starting supporting business instead of giving in to special interests who constantly oppose anything that benefits business.

Cleveland has the wonderful 4th St Arcade and a ton of old infrastructure and development down Euclid. Short North is a small glimpse of what a true walkable city could be, I would love for this type of development to continue throughout our neighborhoods and Cleveland. Don't forget The Arnold was in town, that's thousands of extra people out in the area compared to a normal weekend. We are certainly coming up though!
March 6, 20241 yr Anyone know what's up with the old Family Dollar building? Shocked that hasn't been developed yet!
March 6, 20241 yr Nah. When you own a few suburban strip malls and an office building, you sit on land you've owned since 1985 and either wait out an unsolicited offer for more than it's worth or take the tax write off and parking fees. That's where city regulations would really come in handy to get folks to turn over underutilized land. I used to think it was owned by family dollar corporate but I guess not. The same owner owns the Weiland Market strip mall. BIBIbop outlot on Henderson and the Wesbanco tower up there too interestingly enough. I wouldn't put much stock in anything happening unless they cash out.

Although there will probably be some kind of loophole that if you propose something every now and then, you’re good.

Hopefully not as long as parkside took, but I would guess a few years still.
March 8, 20241 yr Oh Dispatch... Short North did a Study but they didn't address parking! Let's dive deeper in to this to further the myth! And then calling parking rates 'high' in the Short North as objective facts... Followed by showing how low they are Come back when you spent $40 on parking for an evening out and call them high. Get rocked for calling $1-3.25 an hour 'expensive'. Edited March 8, 20241 yr by DTCL11

I thought a lot of tables and chairs, a la a European city square, would make the alley area vibrant.

It's had a couple proposals over the years but has largely sat empty for awhile sadly. I honestly dont know what the current plan is. It's just a shame that we lost the art supply and art galleries there just sit empty for so long.
March 10, 20241 yr There was a proposal brought to renovate the outside facade of the space next door last month. I think for that prescription company still. For what it’s worth, the bottom floor of the space pictured is no longer listed as available on Crexi or Loopnet, but the office space above it is. I think (hope) we should see two new tenants in these buildings soon.
March 10, 20241 yr Speaking of for lease, I also noticed the CM space that had El Segundo is listed for lease so I wonder if he's giving up the location. Seems like they wouldn't advertise it for lease if CM wanted to try another concept there.

This project seems like a slam dunk, I’m surprised it didn’t go through.
