Construction to Begin This Fall on New 10-Story Short North Hotel

Final plans for the new 10-story Moxy Hotel building were unveiled this afternoon, which will replace the former Haiku restaurant building at 800 North High Street. Local developers Crawford Hoying first unveiled the plans last September for the new building, and worked through various iterations to get to the final version.

“We are excited to contribute to a place like the Short North,” stated Crawford Hoying President Brent Crawford. “With the diversity of people and businesses, we are eager to elevate the experience for those who love the area as much as we do.”

There's activity on the site. A lane is temporarily shut down on High and Hubbard and Pearl are closed. It may be utility work ahead of demolition and construction.

Looks like just simple disconnection utility work at the moment.  The true indicator of progress is when they put the guards up on the wires; when that happens you'll start seeing demo and construction.

Speaking of action it seems like the work on the UDF redevelopment has ground to a halt.  The last time someone was out working on it was Thursday of last week.

Could be, they're definitely not the only project that has stalled.  It seems metalworkers and concrete finishers are where we are lacking.  Also I wonder where steel demand is and if that's stalling some projects.  Most major cities are going through a construction boom in some way shape or form so I wouldn't be surprised if that is an issue for a lot of these projects.  Too bad the government couldn't forsee that 20-35 years ago when they put the American steel industry on the chopping block with some of these trade deals.

When construction slowed down in the late 2000s a lot of people decided not to pursue the building trades. Add in 10 years of retirements and there aren't enough people to do the work.

Those trade deals cheapened the cost of steel. I'm not sure that has anything to do with the supply issue. Sure, it killed some low-wage steel-working jobs, but it helped the bottom line of the companies building, which should enable the more-wealthy corporations to hire more people, right?

Some low-wage steel working jobs?  You just killed your whole point there, enough so that I'm not even going to respond to such a snobby reply with what I know and think because you don't deserve that.  I will say this via trickle down effects it cost our state alone 10's of thousands of jobs and crushed the economy of eastern Ohio.

I like the white brick - it's a nice contrast to the rest of the SN.

Construction fence is going up and the parking lot is closed to the public.

Glad you're back!

This project is moving forward - the former Haiku (and before that, the Trailways bus depot) has been torn down and site clearing is underway. I'm looking forward to see how this building looks!

Here is a shot of the demolition of Haiku.  They cleared the rubble out really quick as well.  I'm curious how fast they will get this 10 story hotel up.

Yea the site was completely cleared when I walked past on Sunday.

The building developed by Stonehenge at 1055 N. High (W. 3rd and High) has reached the 4th floor. The type of construction is different from most other buildings on High - steel studs with a concrete slab between each floor. Walls separating units are clad in metal. Does anyone know why? I've never seen this before. The building was approved as a 6 story structure but I swear they've topped off the structure. Not pictured, but the stair and elevator cores appear to be finished and there's a flag at the top, usually a signal that the building is at it's full height. Hopefully they're just waiting for a crane, the forklift they've been using can't reach much higher. It's a slow and strange project.

I wish I had some answers about this project.  But I haven't heard any updates since it was approved (other than the slowly evolving construction photos).  It's been a weird project from the beginning.  CU had this photo of it in their Short North construction updates posted September 7.  Its a block up High Street from the photo you posted:

I was wrong about this building topping off - there's scaffolding on the south stair tower and is appears to be growing, albeit slowly...

Verification from this photo posted Oct. 18 at http://www.columbusunderground.com/construction-roundup-short-north-italian-village that the 6-story Stonehenge project at 3rd & High is still going up ... slowly:

Nice day for a walk. This three block area of High St. is really busy construction wise. Steel is going up quickly on the UDF project at High and 1st.

It really is pretty large. You can see the top of it from 670.

711 N High looks enormous from 670 judging by the elevator shafts that have topped out. I will be interested to see what the Haiku site will look like from 670.

You can just barely see the Park Street project from 670 currently.  I came in from the airport that way today and you could see the crane that was driving the pilings in at the Haiku site from 670.  With the project topping out at 10 stories it is going to be very visible from 670, even during the summer.

A few updates here:

1.  The progress on the UDF site is remarkable.

2.  They are now using a much more quiet pile driver at the Haiku site; this one is a vibrating hammer versus pneumatic.

3.  All elevator shafts and stairwells are complete at the Wood/Schiff site, not much action there today though.

The UDF development, while only 3 (or 4?) stories tall, is going to be such an improvement on the disgusting building and surface lot that was there before.

I'm so excited for both the Haiku and the Wood/Schiff developments. Adding office and hotel space to the Short North is going to turn it into a more 24 hour district rather than an afternoon/evening district. Additionally, I like the design of both buildings so I'm excited to see the finished product.

Don't forget the hotel at the former assisted living facility; I think you're right it's going to be great for the vibrancy of the neighborhood.  Slowly but surely  from Lane Ave to Main Street will be one solid corridor.

The retail space in the Stonehenge project is extremely shallow (to make room for the ground floor garage behind). I'm really interested in how/if it will be subdivided, and what businesses they will get to go in there

Snapped a picture this weekend of the Short North looking towards Campus... The area is growing up

^Steel is going up along the High St. side of the 711 project.

I think the crane will probably going up soon at the Haiku site. If it goes up quick enough, we will have 4 cranes within about 4 blocks of each other in the Short North.

There was one going up or coming down somewhere this afternoon in the short north.  I was on my way to the airport when I saw it so I was unable to turn around and grab a picture.

Based on what I saw from 670 this morning all three cranes were still standing in the Short North. I didn't see another crane going up, but I did see a smaller crane around the UDF/Haiku site, so that one could be building a crane today.

It was at the UDF site, from the angle that I saw it yesterday it appeared to be building a crane.

The City has placed message boards at 3rd and High and at the Cap indicating that streetscape construction begins on January 8th. It's going to be very difficult to drive through this stretch of High St. with the ongoing public and private work.

Hmm that's odd. I wouldn't think the UDF site would need a tower crane. Last time I was down there it appeared that the steel framing had been topped out.

^ Oh, gotcha. Sorry, I misread your comment.

Steel is going up on the 711 project. I also noticed that the streetscape project has begun with utility work and tree removal.

The High St. streetscape project is in the site clearing phase, exposing the Short North's architecture. It really feels bare without the trees.

What are they doing with the streetscape/trees?
