I got one ?

spacer.png

I have the hardest time with images. I don't know why, but when I use the "insert other media" button and then select "insert image from URL" and then I pasted the above URL, it just flashes red and won't put it in. Anyone have a trick? I've done it this way before and it worked fine for me, though.....

Edit: Solved! Thank you!

You're linking to the imgur album. Get the photo in its own tab and then you don't even have to "insert". Any link that ends with .jpg will automatically imbed itself.

Thank you for the tip! I'm also fairly new to using imgur, so I appreciate it.

I also noticed they did some work with the trees. I think they planted new ones finally that they cut down earlier because they were dead. Didn't get to check all of them yet but .......yeah there are new trees!

wait, so they made that olden people apt building on warren and high into something called the graduate hotel? i used to live across the street, so very strange to see this.

Given the way the Short North has developed over the last two decades, it was more strange to have an apartment building for low income disabled senior citizens in the middle of the most expensive place in the entire city.

A couple things that I've been wondering for awhile that hopefully someone can clarify:

-Is the moxy hotel going to have the wall of frosted glass facing high street or will that change pending the restaurant opening? If not, that's disappointing. As it is now, it's a bit offputting but the big wooden doors make me think those will be entrances in the future.

-What happened to the mikey's shipping container that they had to being in a pull behind trailer?

Looks like there are plastic tarps covering the glass while they work on the restaurant build-out. A couple of them are hanging more loosely now -- it definitely made it look like the glass was frosted before.

I noticed this just yesterday! Glad they weren't frosted. I figured it was only temporary, though. There's no way Townhall (the restaurant moving in) would want it like that.

Btw I ate at Townhall in Cleveland for the first time recently and thought it was really good and I liked the look of the restaurant. Excited for this new one down here! Although the restaurant is Cleveland-themed (or at least its logo) so it's a been strange, lol.

TownHall was supposed to be a Cleveland version of North Star, so it is funny that they will be in Columbus.

Glad it found its own identity. It's a pretty cool place. Interested to see how they differentiate themselves from the Cleveland store. It feels pretty Cleveland-centric. Or maybe they won't change anything and it'll be a Cleveland themed restaurant in Columbus, lol.

I commute on High St through the Short North and have noticed these two completely empty buildings. I find this somewhat surprising. I'm guessing the owners are holding out for high rent tenants. Does anyone know the status of these buildings?

This first is at Poplar and High. There are two parcels here with two different owners. I believe the last business to move out was Blick. The apartments seem empty too. The rear portion of the building is fenced off. I wonder if the building is going to be renovated. The former dry cleaners had a proposed tenant a number of years ago but I haven't heard anything in quite some time. There are for lease signs on both properties - hopefully they will be filled soon.

image.png.3298130fc8bf5a30c86903f5e1525882.png

The other is at Starr and High. About 20-25 years ago this building was renovated to provide affordable housing but now it's completely empty. Recently it used to house Flower Child (moved to E. 5th), Roy G. Biv (moved to River & Rich) and Vamp (moved next door to the White Castle building). The apartments above appear empty as well. I haven't seen any For Lease sings. The "L" shaped lot extends back to the alley. Hopefully the owner is not thinking of tearing down the building. I would think with minimal updates the apartments would rent pretty quickly.

I'm guessing these buildings need quite a bit of work done internally to bring them up to par. If that's the case, I'm sure most potential tenants don't have the appetite for undertaking that type of project when you have newer spaces going up all around them.

It really sucks that one of the first things you see when heading into the Short North from the convention center is a boarded up building.

When flower child was still there, I remember going one time and the power was out. The lady working said it happened all the time and that the wiring was awful. My guess would be it has to be fixed and updated/renovated before it could be rented

Short North parking discount program growing rapidly

A program that aims to relieve parking concerns by visitors to the Short North by incentivizing parking in garages is experiencing major growth.

The Short North parking validation program, which allows visitors to park in three garages along High Street and pay just $1 for the first hour with validation, grew about threefold over 2018 last year, according to the Short North Alliance.

That translates to roughly 13,000 customers and visitors using the discount validation program in 2019, compared with about 4,000 in 2018.

And the number of businesses participating has grown by 52%, with 125 participating compared with 82 in 2018.

Betsy Pandora, executive director of the Short North Alliance, said she was "beyond pleased" with the rise in participation.

"It's great to see people taking advantage of all of the different parking options we have here in the Short North Arts District, and we're excited about the future as we continue to strive to provide the best service possible to residents, businesses and visitors alike."

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Tucked into the 2nd Ave article is news about one of the empty buildings I noted back in January:

Quote

Also heard at this week’s meeting was a two-part application for the building that once held Callander Cleaners, at 608 N. High St. The proposal, which was also presented for conceptual review, calls for adding a rooftop deck to the building and constructing an automated, vertical parking structure on the small lot behind the building, at 24 E. Poplar St.

It appears from this aerial that they already built the access to the flat rooftop that will have the patio. It'll have a great view of the 670 traffic jams!

^^I'm not really sure what they are proposing for parking. Seeing a site plan would help.

Edited by Pablo

This is what it sounds like they are proposing.

Can be open air or enclosed. And the structure can have any variation of architectural styles but this would be my guess as to what they are attempting to approve in terms of 'automated vertical parking'.

These are awesome. Any sense of what these things cost? They seem like a great solution.

The garages are much cheaper to build on the front end but do come with slightly higher maintenance costs over a traditional deck.  I believe it factors out to 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a traditional garage per space.

I have seen some really beautiful ones that they enclose in glass or paneling and play a lot with lighting to make it kind of an art piece. Its also interesting to note that the IVC item requested a height variance of up to 85' for the project so this could be pretty cool and noticeable if designed right.

This spot has long intrigued me. Its such a deep building and that little plot between the Cap and this parcel has so much potential. Very underutilized at this point.

These also seem like the ultimate form of car accommodation. Like, beyond anything I've ever known even to exist to keep cars around. I can't say I'm a fan.

I would tend to agree. The lot and small and has operated with 14 spots for this long, why does it suddenly need more? Not to mention the access issue. With the proximity of the convention center garage, the joseph garage, and even the new pearl garage, any extraordinary efforts to add parking seem out of place. Frankly, I'd rather see it infilled (the lot, not the pocket plaza) with some townhomes or something. But, it's not my building so.... ?‍♂️

Some progress pictures I took today of a couple projects under construction in the Short North (first three pictures are different angles of the same building for different perspectives....I forget the name of this development atm):

Just some construction updates from this weekend since the weather was great.

First up is the project at 3rd & High

The project has capped out and the old Family Dollar continues to deteriorate.

Next up is the residential portion of the Grandview Mercantile at Price & High.

This project has also capped out and exterior brickwork and paneling has started to be installed.

BONUS PICTURE

I wanted to include this picture to show the structures relation to the area around it seeing as the Kaufman proposal has returned (BTW its on the March VVC docket again). Hmm, kind of feels like a mixed use project would contextually make more sense here than a crumbling surface lot, but then again.. the sunlight!

The good news is Columbus residents seem to be following social distancing guidelines in the Short North.  The bad news is those guidelines are hitting the Short North businesses extremely hard.

For the contrast between the Short North before and after coronavirus social distancing, see the two articles below:

On the plus side, it's easy to find a parking spot...?

^oh god... the last thing we need in a global pandemic is an existential discussion on the ease or lack thereof to find parking at any given time.  ?

So depressing. I hope it bounces back.

Every city including New York will need to bounce back.  Given what I know about the people of Columbus, I'm certain that it will bounce back.

Not sure if this has been called out on here so I apologize if I am being redundant... The consumer loan cashing place in the short north is officially OUT. Signage has been removed so now it sits awaiting more desirable development circumstances.

All that time complaining and we just needed a global pandemic to finally see progress ?  Heres to hoping for improved economic conditions and a development proposal of 12+ Stories ?

Looks like the building at Starr and High is being renovated. New windows have been installed and the interior looks like it’s been gutted. It stood empty for a while and I was worried it would be torn down.
