Summit and Fourth have been literal expressways for traffic going or coming from downtown to Clintonville forever-I actually think it was worse during the 80's than now. Nobody lived downtown and the rest of the way up was not considered important at all-mostly lower middle class and poverty-just people nobody cared about or thought about. And the lower reaches just above downtown were very dangerous and people would drive fast because of that-I heard gunshots numerous times going down Summit and even more when going up Fourth. The crime was really bad in that area in the 80's and 90's.

*I may be biased as the worst car accident I have been in happened on Fourth street in 1993-and it was not my fault! and alcohol and ignoring a stop sign were involved.

And yes they should absolutely highlight the crosswalks as much as possible. Why they are not doing this is beyond me.

To the OP, 35 feels like 60 on those streets and unfortunately it probably won’t change.

@ Todd.. when I moved to Cbus in ‘06 those areas between campus and downtown until about 1st were still super sketchy. There was a murder at 1st & 4th I want to say around ‘07. And I literally witnessed a shoot out early afternoon outside of Weiland Park Elementary in about ‘08.

Fast forward to about ‘12 and all of that seemed to abruptly end and started this new era. Meanwhile most of Weiland Park still is a pretty diverse community as far as income is concerned and has become much much safer. All good things, hopefully it remains the same. I think you still have at minimum 5-10 years of that style community. There is still a ton of subsidized housing in that area. Which honestly is great, especially for young lower income families.

Yeah I remember reading about how before the bike paths on those roads, the speed limit was actually 45 or something along those lines. That is insane for a road with that many houses.

There was literally no pedestrian traffic back then that I can remember. Pedestrians crossed those streets but really did not go up or down them. And yeah everyone went about ten miles over the speed limit. Because they are one way they can be like speedways-and if you are trying to get the lights just right and get the green lights..well you know. At least that is how it was.

And although that accident I had was not my fault...I was going 45 in a 35 zone on 4th I will admit.  It was just too easy to speed on those streets.  I would not do it now though.

At that time (early/mid 2000's) I knew people who lived just a house or two down from Weinland Park itself on 4th and others who lived at the complex at 1225 Summit(then called Marble-somethingorother-ok I looked and there is a sign outside of it saying Marble Properties) and it was not really very nice but not as bad as it had been.  I remember there were prostitutes(both male and female-one of the guys was a junkie as well)living there along with a witch, etc.-it was a strange group there back then-it reminded me of the apartment complex from Tales of the City just a bit nastier and with some domestic violence thrown in.  That was the last time I got a real voodoo doll-from the witch living in that complex. She moved to Arizona along with several others from that complex. The guy living on 4th had to leave as they renovated those doubles and of course raised the rents. It was still a bit rundown but I did not feel unsafe. It just felt considerably safer at least when compared to the 80's/90's.  Everything below about Chittenden seemed very bad in the 80's/90's. Above that it seemed to not be so bad and mostly harmless college students.

With all the development coming it will be a huge change. And hopefully the area will retain some diversity and be a safe place for everyone and not just gentrified for wealthier people.

Looks like Corso doesn't plan to redevelop the Montecristo site anymore.  He talks about it at the end of this article about the new 3rd and High building and all of the other stuff he owns over there:

Chris Corso on his latest Short North project: 'This is full circle for me'

...

“That’s a lot of different restaurant and entertainment options there now,” Corso said. “It’s a real tourist destination.”

He himself has at least one more project in the works in the area. Corso said he plans to convert the Montecristo House of Cigar into a new speakeasy-style bar.

That property at one point was going to be another high-rise residential unit.

“That’s just not in the cards anymore,” he said.

They should expand this along the entire "High Five" from Arcadia to Greenlawn-it would be a nice visual identifier for the whole strip sort of tying it together in both directions on High as in North/South and from one side of the street to the other. This would be especially good up through the University District and Old North Columbus. JMHO.

*I know I have seen old pics with arches across other streets as well as High.

Thanks for the photos. I must say I like the High St. commercial building better than the residential portion. At first I thought the doors were boarded up but it looks like it's a wood trim accent.

Yea, the random little wood accents is a hot trend right now. It is not always appropriate or fitting of the style of building. I'd say this is one of those cases. Would've been better painted out or a different material on this building.

My gripe is that the windows feel almost smushed into place (for lack of a better term). They just seem a bit small.

I just appreciate how quickly they built this. If only this was the standard speed for all Columbus development.

I like the building but it boggles my mind that the city let them build the new curb cuts on third and then new streetscape matching everything else on high only to then let them leave the janky old curb in between the the curb cut and new high street streetscape. They could have easily rebuilt it to current standards and planted some much needed street trees.

The city is terrible with this stuff and still prioritizes cars. There is also no excuse for the terrible pedestrian crosswalk markings not being striped in the most pedestrian centric area in the city, but I won't get on that soap box today :p

This building DOES look great, though. I can't wait to see it once I move back to Columbus. All the changes, really! Lots going on still.

Side note: I've been in that house directly behind this building and it used to have a great view of High street from the rooftop patio, but that definitely seems gone now, lol.

One 5G provider uses a nice pole and another a crappy wood pole.

image.png.c3f82a15627f7f995be22996ca871f74.png

It used to have a street light so I bet is just preceded the new building whereas the other one is new, coinciding with the installation of the high street reno.  Granted, being this close is not out of the realm of possibilities but I also wonder if the new one is meant to replace the other. They removed the streetlight it seems.

But also, the city has been terrible on just letting these go up wherever and look however.

^One could be Verizon and the other AT&T or T-mobile. The City has no say as to where they are located and how they look. The telecom industry successfully lobbied the Ohio legislature into banning any oversight by municipalities or residents.

Cities cannot prevent the installation but cities can specify if a pole should be a certain material based on location and they can also make requirements for adjusting location slightly. Thats why we see metal in certain areas. Worthington successfully required certain appearances. All poles are put out for public comment too but it's probably too overwhelming to keep up and commissions didn't have alot of time to get specifics in the community standards. Oddly, short north was not listed a a neighborhood that requires metal poles in this article

That article lists Italian Village and Victorian Village as neighborhoods where wood poles are strongly discouraged, so that covers the Short North.

Is the Short North even technically a neighborhood according to the city? It is an Arts District.

Then it wouldn't be up to city muster making me hope that it was more temporary in its design. That big box on the side is also odd for a 5g tower. Is it possible this was a service pole for the construction site with a temp street lamp, transformer of some sort, and temp location of 5g?

Place your bets on temp or permanent. Fingers crossed it was temp.

First Look: Luxe 23

The new mixed-use apartment building at 1079 North High Street known as “Luxe 23” is in the process of wrapping up construction, and Columbus Underground was given the opportunity to take a tour of the new building for a sneak preview of what’s coming soon.

The ground floor of this Short North building is home to a hotel-style lobby with interior access to the new public bar and restaurant concepts from Corso Ventures, which are on track for opening in 2021. The partnership between the restaurant owners and property management at Live Preferred provides residents with a unique opportunity for room service delivery.

Yeah, the inside is a hot mess.  Very '90s hotel lobby, trying too hard.  It needs to be elegantly understated, not garishly over the top.

No kidding, it looks like an upscale antique mall on the inside.

Looks like with Monarch (Formerly Level) leaving, Wood has decided to give the building an overhaul. The address is

700 N High Street, directly across from Del Mar.

Details included a full facade renovation, a full buildout of the second floor, adding a pretty substantial glass roof to open up the space, and a wrap around outdoor patio on the second level. Looks like a pretty detailed and elaborate renovation so while no tenant is mentioned, I would guess they have one in mind (looks too tight for an event space). I do believe that while the structure is historic, it is not considered a contributing building due to it being a combo of a few lots and multiple remodels over the years.

Thanks for all the photo updates NorthShore647.

The Lincoln is the best and most camouflaged parking garage yet in the Short North.  And there have been many good camouflaged garages before this one.  But this one takes it to another level.

Toby Keith

Chuck E Cheese.

I would guess it may be an out of town operator if he is implying Columbus Community at large. I cant quite think of one that exists locally that would 'Thrill' the Short North community specifically.

It will be interesting to see what comes about in 2021... far too many for lease signs in the Short North right now. I can't recall a time in my 10 years here to see so many empty storefronts and restaurants.

To be fair it was like that pre-pandemic due to all of the construction.  Commercial space availability probably has hit it's bubble but many of these are multi-use which is still generating income so I assume the developers aren't very concerned at the moment.

Yeah at the UO 15th Anniversary Meet 2019 there were a lot of open spaces and foot traffic was down in the SN due to street construction and the SN's continuous rent-seeking. Landlords shoot for the moon and sometimes it just doesn't happen long term.

Also it was 900 degrees that day

Redesign of Short North Building Moving Forward

A familiar building in the heart of the Short North will be getting a complete redesign. Much of the existing roof and large portions of two exterior walls will be removed as part of the project, which will transform the look of 700 N. High St., at the south corner of E. Lincoln St.

The new plan calls for a more contemporary design, with a second floor space featuring an outdoor patio overlooking High Street and a large vaulted skylight.

The redevelopment proposal was approved by the Italian Village Commission at its February meeting.

Not exactly development news but I like the new signage for Urban Chophouse at Luxe 23. This is an Urban Meyer and Chris Corso joint venture. The sign is obviously a play on the Chicago theatre sign but I think it looks good. Now I kind of want someone to put one up that says Columbus.

Looks like the SN is getting another large-scale mural.

The Short North Alliance & 800 N High have filed an application for a large painted mural on the south wall of the Moxy, overlooking the Eagle patio. I am personally insanely excited to see another huge mural in the city and SN... BONUS, it isn't vinyl!

The artist is local artist Stephen Davis and it'll be title "The Heart of Columbus".

There are dozens of blank walls just itching for murals, it just feels like until recently every landlord or developer has been scared to take these more permanent leaps. That said, it seems that with Gravity, the Graduate murals, the LED/Neon Columbus downtown, and now this...  the ball may finally be rolling on these types of public art.

That new mural looks amazing. Hope the short north arts district continues to add permanent murals like this one. So much room for improvement.

It’s funny you say that because I thought the same thing. Awhile ago I dm’d them on Instagram about that wall and told them they should do some kind of mural maybe gay pride inspired but they didn’t respond to me. I know they had a plan to add another story to the building at one point but haven’t heard anything about that in years.

Off topic but I also think the building in arena district that the club Dahlia is in should have a mural on it. A big Dahlia mural would look cool on the front. Also dm’d them with the suggestion and got no response lol
