April 20, 20214 yr ^I recall there being one around 1st and High in the 90s. The dancers gyrated in the storefront windows.

It was right next door to where Arch City is now and a hookah lounge was next door to it.

May 27, 20214 yr In the realm of unexpected/unique development news, seems 608 N High (old Utrecht building) is proposing a expansion/renovation. Looks like they want to turn the building to modern office space and take advantage of their unique spot in the SN. Overall, while strange, it is a pretty cool update in my eyes in a prime spot. Also kind of feels like "What if we placed the 5th ave Apple Store on the roof? Pretty good eh." 😂 Existing Updates Edited May 27, 20214 yr by DevolsDance

I think just adding a floor or two with some unique design would be better overall though.

I nearly always approve of doing that-we need much more of it IMO. It does not look bad to me really.

I’ve thought for a while that it would make for a great bar/restaurant patio space but never knew who owned that land.

May 28, 20214 yr That looks great. Hope it gets approved and work can start this summer. RIP to Danes that used to be there a long time ago. That strip of buildings is in my top 5 list of buildings/lots that would like to see new development in the short north. Some others in my top 5 would be family dollar building, check cashing building, Monte cristo building, former American apparel building.

June 4, 20214 yr Renovation Plan Floated for Short North Building A new proposal for a prominent Short North building will be heard by the Italian Village Commission next week. The building, at 608 N. High St., was once home to Callandar Cleaners and several other businesses stretching along the pedestrian-only East Poplar Avenue. The plan calls for a new glass structure on the roof of the building, adding a third floor office and meeting space that would open onto a new rooftop patio. The modern addition would extend down into the second floor, replacing a section of the building’s existing brick exterior wall. June 21, 20213 yr Would this be downsized in Clintonville to 5 feet? City to Install ‘Makers Monument’ in Short North Arts District A 20 foot tall crystalline sculpture inspired by Columbus makers is coming to the Short North this week. Located at West Hubbard Avenue and High Street, the new sculpture installation by Ohio-born artist Mark Reigelman titled “The Makers Monument,” is decorated with the shapes of items that have been made in Columbus throughout its history. At nearly half a million dollars, the piece is “the largest single investment in public art in the City of Columbus’ history,” according to the Short North Arts District. The sculpture was funded by the City of Columbus’ Capital Budget with contributions from property owners in the Short North Special Improvement District. June 21, 20213 yr That explains the random barriers and signs that have been staged there for awhile.
June 21, 20213 yr Don't get me wrong, this is amazing. But, this line from the article caught my eye and brought up thoughts that I've had about the Short North for a while now: "Reigelman says the piece memorializes High Street’s position as a maker hub." Is High Street still a maker hub? Can makers actually afford to be on High St anymore, especially in the "Art and Soul" of Columbus in the Short North? I think most of the artists and makers moved to other neighborhoods years ago at this point. I think we need to just accept that the Short North "Arts District" has really become the Short North "Entertainment District" and pass the art baton on to the new neighborhoods truly doing art. Gallery Hop is just a bar crawl at this point, but Franklinton Fridays has a pretty cool feel. Obviously this is just my opinion. Curious to hear others. Edited June 21, 20213 yr by TH3BUDDHA

June 25, 20213 yr It's a catch 22. First, I do kind of agree with the 'Makers' comment. It's just flowery language that any organization or community will use to tie something in so I'm not too caught up on it. I wonder if it has impressions of caskets? I will (at least for now) defend the Short North as an Arts Distrcit. Despite the changes the neighborhood has seen, I think the net loss in terms of galleries over the last 10 years is still in the 3-5 range. A few have opened and one is slated to open soon. (Dino Nemec is taking over the old Glean space for his own art gallery) The big issue is the infill between all those spaces has been drifting away from art. We've soon some good efforts to make sure things start art focused or art is part of the new builds but I think it could be ramped up. Also, some of the newer restaurants have drifted from displaying and selling local art in the same way that lemongrass, haiku, etc have. Whether it has lost its 'indie' vibe is not in question but I still think it deserves to be recognized as a place of arts while acknowledging that its going to take alot of work to maintain and grow that. It will never look like the arts district of decades gone by but that doesn't mean it can't be an arts district for decades to come. And it's funny you mention this because I almost put this in the the Franklinton thread. I saw shirt this weekend that said 'Keep the Short North Weird'.... about 10 years too late for that campaign. Anyway. I welcome it. But I'd also like to see the next largest investment in public art be somewhere like the riverfront which I have long advocated should be lined with statues and sculptures.

We are hiring a Commercial Real Estate Associate and I figured this was a great place to get the word out. As someone who has somewhat of a passion for commercial real estate developments, I’ve always been curious about this career. But how exactly does one get into this industry without previous experience? Also, is it very commission heavy? I’m someone who is quite fearful of commission heavy jobs because of how uncertain your income is month to month.

September 27, 20213 yr There is also the Urban Ohio Career Networking Thread where you can get clicks from all over the state in case someone is looking to relocate. I would say UO might be a good place to look for applicants considering I interviewed for a very similar position years ago with another well-known Ohio developer due to a posting in that thread. I also would be applying for the position myself had I not made other commitments for the coming one-year period (even though I am a little more mid-career nowadays than the description states).
October 24, 20213 yr Does anybody know what is going in at the NW corner of High and 5th? It’s the old American Apparel/Madison USA space. Also it looks like the space that held the art supply store BLICK on High St. is getting a new tenant as well, if I had to guess based off the interior work it looks to be a salon (exactly what the neighborhood needs more of smh) but I could be wrong. Any insight on these?
October 27, 20213 yr Weiler's latest Short North venture is ready for residents “Residents have started moving into a rehabbed mixed-use building in the Short North, the latest project in the area from Columbus developer Robert Weiler Co. The three-story building at 989-997 N. High St.,near the intersection with Starr Avenue, includes 21 apartments and about 8,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor. The apartments are market rate and a mix of studio and one-bedroom units, to be managed by Weiler Management Co. A restaurant and bar tenant has signed a lease for the building, said Skip Weiler, the developer's president, although he declined to disclose its name. He also said the firm is in talks with another tenant to occupy the remaining retail space, though no lease has been signed.” https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2021/10/27/starr-and-high.html

I get this is only a one story building, but empty buildings and lots should go first. It says the first level would be event space, which seems weird for that area. I feel like this would have a really hard time passing the commission.

The address is 700 N High Street, directly across from Del Mar. Details included a full facade renovation, a full buildout of the second floor, adding a pretty substantial glass roof to open up the space, and a wrap around outdoor patio on the second level. Looks like a pretty detailed and elaborate renovation so while no tenant is mentioned, I would guess they have one in mind (looks too tight for an event space). I do believe that while the structure is historic, it is not considered a contributing building due to it being a combo of a few lots and multiple remodels over the years. https://columbusohdev.box.com/s/4owcufftmwdtm2djcwcq6m2zc5wf1yvd Think they might be starting this now.
