Posted October 17, 200618 yr Cod's radio operator reminisces aboard sub after 6 decades away Monday, October 16, 2006 John Horton Plain Dealer Reporter William Renninger slowly lowered himself through the opening, disappearing into the belly of the USS Cod. Down the submarine's ladder he climbed - step, step, step - until he plunged deep into his past. Sixty-one years. A virtual lifetime ago. That was the last time Renninger's feet touched inside the vessel. He walked away from her in 1945 after safely finishing his seventh wartime patrol of the Pacific Ocean. October 17, 200618 yr It would be nice if they could move it to North Coast Harbor. I know its not the greatest tourist attraction, but its still pretty cool. At the very least, it would provide another interesting to see at NCH. At the current location, who really knows about it?
October 17, 200618 yr The day I visited the Cod, a WWII submarine veteran was among the visitors. He had some interesting tales. He said that they took their initial training on WWI-vintage subs that were no longer fit for combat service. They never left the harbor for deep water because when they submerged, there was no great assurance that they would be able to surface on their own. When they were running on diesel power, he said, the noise inside was deafening.
