January 28, 201015 yr I too am a Sharon Reed admirer. I can't hardly stand to watch their broadcast, because it sounds like they're promoting a monster truck show, but I do think 19's on-air talent is the best we have here. Hahaha, she was doing some kind of fitness piece recently and I thought she looked really hot (and I don't swing that way)! Also related but unrelated - Denise Dufala is a sweetheart in person.
January 28, 201015 yr Hahaha, she was doing some kind of fitness piece recently and I thought she looked really hot (and I don't swing that way)! Also related but unrelated - Denise Dufala is a sweetheart in person. Agree and I dont swing that way either! Also, agree on Denise Dufala. A bit ditsy maybe but a nice (and a genuine local cleveland) girl. Robin Swoboda is also a very nice lady (at least 15 years ago). She used to come into my store all the time and flirt with me! Denise too.
February 11, 201015 yr OPPORTUNITY OR OPPORTUNISM? http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/opportunity-or-opportunism/Content?oid=1836287 Scene and Roldo drive me nuts. While there are legitimate points brought up in the article, it is mostly (and always) big bad business and big bad government is always at fault. At one point in this article there is a complaint that the roads in the area are crumbling, and that is bad. Later they say if the OC is opened, the feeder streets would have to be rebuilt, which is bad. Another point of the article states that many details have not been nailed down because they are still determining the exact route of the road, then they talk to a person who has been wronged because no one has contacted him directly even though his house is "smack in the middle of the proposed road." I wonder if the author had informed this gentleman about this "smack in the middle" thing, even though the final alignment has not been finalized. :whip: BAH! I miss when the scene was locally owned and had articles written by people who cared about the city. Not petulant punks who are just trying to pad their resume when they go apply for Huffington Post.
February 11, 201015 yr This is a great article! Rob Pitingolo · Deciphering Another Nonsense Forbes List February 10th, 2010 http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2010/deciphering-another-nonsense-forbes-list
February 11, 201015 yr Good article...Essentially, Cleveland was penalized for having mild summers. Go Figure!
February 11, 201015 yr I'd like to send this to all the radio stations in cleveland, who continue to mention this stupid article every day. Idiots.
February 11, 201015 yr This is a great article! Rob Pitingolo · Deciphering Another Nonsense Forbes List February 10th, 2010 http://www.brewedfreshdaily.com/2010/deciphering-another-nonsense-forbes-list There are some good points.... Mostly this one: "Forbes’s lists are intellectually bankrupt and don’t deserve anyone’s time of day." But otherwise I dont see how most of his points would have changed the outcome.
March 5, 201015 yr I have noticed the PD trying to be less negative. So I started a poll to see what y'all think.
March 5, 201015 yr I have noticed that also. Has there been a change on the editorial board or have they finally started listening to us. For a while, the PD was becoming a joke, but now I can see modest signs of change away from the constant negativity.
March 5, 201015 yr The change is subtle but I think it's there. They brought some civility to their comment section and that helped a lot. I really don't want the PD to go all positive all the time... I want them to be critical of things that are bad, and we have plenty of them. But at least they've cut back on the gratuitous Forbes style garbage.
March 5, 201015 yr the little word doc I keep on my desktop to copy and paste outrageous negative editorializing (and sent in to the editor every month or so) within articles hasn't been getting much use lately. Most of the ridiculous negativity at this point stems from the opinion columns (particuarly larkin who must have felt someone needed to pick up the slack from feagler)... but that doesn't anger me nearly as much. Even if I strongly disagree with what their saying, opinion columns are for well... opinions.
March 6, 201015 yr I haven't noticed. The one thing I have noticed is the increase of litter on my street because of there ridiculous "free" version being thrown to every house once a week. I am going to be so upset again once the snow melts and the signs of their irresponsibility is apparent.
March 6, 201015 yr I also noticed this. And a lot of comments below have been praising them on the good news, saying things like, this is what Cleveland needs, and we need to hear more good news like this.
March 7, 201015 yr I thought recently that the PD had modified its position regarding the continual bashing of Cleveland and then I read Larkin. Once again I am reminded of the old school PD. Is he the new Dick Feagler? I thought Larkin retired? Why can't institutions like the PD break with the past and start functioning in the present with an eye to the future? Wouldn't that be refreshing?
March 8, 201015 yr So now Drew Carry is going to save Cleveland on page one of the PD? Is this the PD's way of voting "No Confidence" in the Mayor without having to attack him directly and face the fallout of criticizing a black mayor?
March 8, 201015 yr ^Larkin was toxic, but take heart, he is nearly retired. The last of the worst generation of Cleveland. ^I didn't see the bash Jackson angle, maybe the entire local democratic party, but not Jackson.
March 9, 201015 yr I'm with you KJP. This is the best local news, they're actually aiming to be the best at what they do...be entertaining. Like I love it when they're talking about a convicted criminal, the anchor will say "Let's hope that scum stays behind bars!" Classic. I love channel 19. I don't know why, but I visited their website today and was greeted by screaming headlines like: BEWARE! CLEVELAND POLICE ADD EXTRA PATROLS THIS WEEKEND IT'S HERE! PARENTS TELL SCHOOL OFFICIALS THEIR DAUGHTER HAS H1N1 TRAGIC PICK-UP TRUCK RAMS BUGGY, KILLS TWO TEENS AND CRITICALLY INJURES ANOTHER "Fear TV" strikes again...
March 9, 201015 yr Nah I didn't interpret anything racial involved...but I'm sure the dot bomb comments did. Whether one agrees with the libertarian slant or not, I welcome the topics Drew is bringing to the table. So now Drew Carry is going to save Cleveland on page one of the PD? Is this the PD's way of voting "No Confidence" in the Mayor without having to attack him directly and face the fallout of criticizing a black mayor?
March 9, 201015 yr I'd like to send this to all the radio stations in Cleveland, who continue to mention this stupid article every day. Idiots. You should do that to answer any more of these stupid lists; especially WTAM, Clear Channel...and the rest of the corporate controlled media...and personally to Mr. Trivisonno, who I might add is an embarrassment to talk radio and to Cleveland. If there is a list that serves up the top ten worst talk shows in the country, I am sure his show would make that list. Now that would be legit! Maybe there is a top ten list for most skewed and misleading reporting of top ten lists.. I am sure Forbes would make first place!
April 6, 201015 yr If you are a reader of the PD, this might be worthwhile for you to participate by giving feedback on their coverage of important issues.... PLAIN DEALER READER ADVISORY FORUM Dear Readers, This is an unusual request: I am hoping you'll be willing to participate in a short survey that won't result in a newspaper story, but will be an interesting exercise and will help out one of our editors. The editor is David Campbell, who as associate sports editor is third in command in The Plain Dealer sports department. He is pursuing a master's degree in communication management at John Carroll University. As part of his thesis, he is looking into the financial problems that newspapers across the country are having, and is conducting a short, eight-question survey about a possible solution that some have suggested: using tax money to help keep newspapers solvent. He thought, and I agree, that it would be hard to find a better group to survey than the Reader Advisory Network, as you are Plain Dealer and cleveland.com readers who have more than just a casual interest in journalism and news. The survey takes only 2-3 minutes to complete. Here is an HTML link: Click to take JCU journalism survey If that link does not work, this link can be posted into your browser: http://surveys.polldaddy.com/s/E22ADBA8CFC5D74E/ If you would like to contact David regarding the survey, his e-mail is [email protected]. Thank you for your time, and for helping out a college student! April 6, 201015 yr When media becomes dependent on government funding, it is a very small step for the media to become a voice of the government. Threats to cut off funding can sway the editors to stop certain articles and not pursue investigations. I think the newspapers and media in general are essential to a functioning democracy, but only if they are free of government involvement. On a slightly different note, I think that newspapers and other media have a responsibility to report the news in a a balanced fashion. Unfortunately, when a large market is supported by only one newspaper, that paper may begin to sensationalize the news in order to increase circulation. I believe that in the 12 years I have lived in Cleveland, the PD has specifically exaggerated the bad news in Cleveland for at least the last 6 years. When we first arrived, I did not notice the constant fear of downtown. I can not think of any calamity that occurred downtown in that time, but most people now think it is extremely unsafe to come downtown. They get ALL of their news from the PD and other local media outlets trying to increase their presence.
April 12, 201015 yr Does anyone else think this is a really weird way to begin a restaurant review? Atmosphere of Vento in Bay Village will transport you to Italy: Restaurant Review I have never been to Italy, but my imagination tells me Vento in Bay Village has the look and feel of an authentic trattoria -- a small family restaurant featuring reasonably priced, simply prepared homemade specialties and regional favorites. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2010/04/atmosphere_of_vento_in_bay_vil.html I'm not a journalism prof, but my guess is that beginning a piece by highlighting your lack of first hand knowledge about the topic is a poor way to win reader trust.
April 12, 201015 yr This is what happens when you fire your professional restaurant reviewer and solicit free reviews from your readership.
April 12, 201015 yr ^You're depressing me. Did the PD can Joe Crea? Or is he not really a pro restaurant reviewer.
April 12, 201015 yr I think, like their theater editor Tony Brown, he's only allowed to maintain an online presence now.
April 12, 201015 yr ^Interesting. I pick up a paper copy of the PD so rarely these days I never really thought about the divergence there. Well, if they're relying on customer reviews...I hope they tighten their editorial standards a little bit. God, I can only imagine if this spreads to their music coverage: "I've never heard the world's great orchestras play, but my imagination tells me the Cleveland Orchestra is right there with them."
April 12, 201015 yr Our theater scene isn't too shabby either, but that doesn't apparently matter all that much.
June 7, 201015 yr Playhouse Square Will Gain Flexibility by Getting Smaller By Tony Brown, PD Sunday June 6, 2010 Cleveland's downtown theatre district, one of the great success stories in a city with a shortage of them, is growing again. This time by getting smaller. Really Tony Brown? Really? Would it honestly have been so hard to write: "Cleveland's downtown theatre district, one of the great success stories in the city, is growing again." Really? And the PD wonders why they are accused of being negative when they just claim to be "reporting the news".
June 7, 201015 yr ^Agreed. Though I must admit, the regular daily Cleveland bashing from the PD has been toned down when compared to the recent past.
June 7, 201015 yr With the exception of Tony Brown. He seems incapable of writing an article that doesn't tell us that we live in the worst city in the united states. Him and Larkin... who I'm pretty sure just decided he needed to pick up the slack of a retiring dick feagler.
June 7, 201015 yr ^Agreed. And I wonder if WE actually had anything to do with the PD toning down its constant Cleveland negativity...
August 6, 201014 yr Cleveland Critic Loses Lawsuit Over Reassignment By DANIEL J. WAKIN Allison Carey/The Plain Dealer Donald Rosenberg, classical music critic of The Plain Dealer.A jury on Friday rejected the lawsuit brought by a classical music critic of The Plain Dealer of Cleveland who sued his newspaper and the Cleveland Orchestra management after being reassigned over complaints about negative reviews. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/06/cleveland-critic-loses-lawsuit-over-reassignment/
August 7, 201014 yr They've been reporting on the story as it's unfolded. It's a pretty major story in the orchestral music world.
August 10, 201014 yr Just when I think the PD is getting more balanced in its reporting, I find myself yelling at the paper again. This article has been bothering me for sometime now. "Northeast Ohio's slow recovery took a break in June, report says" http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/08/northeast_ohios_slow_recovery.html Let me start by saying that the article is factual. My problem with it is that they focus on all of NEO and never mention that the Cleveland region is a relatively bright spot in Ohio. According to the June unemployment numbers: Cleveland = 9.3% Columbus = 9.2% Cincinnati = 10.0% Akron = 10.3% Dayton = 11.3% Toledo = 11.6% http://www.bls.gov/web/metro/laummtrk.htm The unemployment for the Greater Cleveland area is less than the national average. Would it kill the PD to at least mention this? Why is it that the local (and national to some extent) media shifts between the city of Cleveland, Greater Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and Northeast Ohio depending on which provides the most depressing results? One more rant, Sunday the Warehouse District held its annual street festival. It was fantastic - one of the best we have had. A family friendly event with music, food, magicians, face painting, games, etc. As of Tuesday I still have seen no report of this in the PD. With all of the negative reporting regarding the WD, wouldn't it have been nice for the PD to print an article about our festival?
August 10, 201014 yr If they want to start Cleveland bashing again, I have no problem bashing the PD and their writers.
August 10, 201014 yr Before we start bashing the PD completely, let's see who the author is of the article -- Tom Breckenridge. I normally remember him being generally more Pro-Cleveland than not...so maybe this article a little out of character for him/being blown out of proportion. Don't get me wrong Oldmanladyluck, I agree with you. As for not reporting on Cleveland events (i.e. Warehouse District Festival), I feel I am the most bothered on almost a weekly basis, since I spend time keeping track of all the events going on around the city. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22979.0.html I did email the link to numerous PD writers last month, and noticed a spike in coverage about mid-july for many of the events I listed; however, it has dropped off since. Now, you want to talk about just the Warehouse District Festival? Check this out -- these were the major events from this past weekend: Aug 6-8: Cleveland Indians vs Minnesota Twins Aug 6-8: Puerto Rican Parade and Festival (Muny Lot) http://www.juliadeburgos.org/festparade.html Aug 7: Dragon Boat Festival http://clevelanddragonboatfestival.com/ Aug 7: Family Fishing Derby (Rockefeller Lagoon) http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/family_fishing_derby_slated_fo.html Aug 7: Lakewood Arts Festival http://lakewoodartsfest.org/ Aug 7: Cleveland Browns "Brown and White Scrimmage" FAMILY DAY (Cleveland Browns Stadium) Cleveland Browns Family Day Aug 7-8: Cleveland Triathlon http://www.pacificsportsllc.com/storage/2010%20Cleveland%20Tri%20Schedule%20of%20Events.pd f Aug 8: Historic Warehouse District Street Festival http://www.warehousedistrict.org/events/events/default.asp Aug 8: Cedar-Fairmount Arts Festival (Cleveland Hts) http://www.cedarfairmount.org/specialevents/wp-content/uploads/2006/04/2010-Postcard-forweb-11.jpg Aug 8: Puerto Rican Parade How many of these got coverage from the PD? I'd say maybe 4...Browns, Indians, Cleveland Triathlon, and Puerto Rican Festival. That's what I see every week as I do the UO events page.
October 4, 201014 yr :-o :-o Say it ain't so!!! :-o :-o Media News: Brian Windhorst to Leave Cleveland Plain Dealer Written By: Scott | Category: Cleveland Cavaliers | Comments: 4 What was just a discussion between two parties a few weeks ago appears to be confirmed: Brian Windhorst will be leaving Cleveland’s Plain Dealer to cover the Miami Heat exclusively for ESPN and ESPN.com. The man affectionately known as “Windy” has been a staple among Cavaliers coverage since breaking in with the Akron Beacon-Journal from 2003 to 2008, subsequently transitioning over to the PD during what was effectively the peak of the LeBron James tenure with the team. Frequently appearing on ESPN.com in the past, Windhorst had been covering James when the two-time MVP was still in high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary. Also a St. V’s alum, it is commonly said that the two men have had parallels within the basketball media universe. Windhorst is largely considered to be among the upper echelon in NBA beat writers, being the youngest in “the game” when he started with the ABJ in 2003. Alas, said parallels will continue on to Miami where James will play for the foreseeable future after leaving Cleveland during the most recent free agency period with Windhorst there to keep his finger on the proverbial pulse. http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/?p=34117
October 4, 201014 yr That's sad, as I was a fan of his. I probably won't read too much of his stuff anymore, since I'm no longer interested in LBJ's career. Great move for him, though, and well deserved.
October 4, 201014 yr Good job, Windy. I will end my subscription to the PD if they bring back Branson Wright as the Cavs' beat reporter.
October 4, 201014 yr I'm guessing ESPN will be paying him a lot more, plus they're betting Lebron is close enough with him to grant plenty of interviews
October 4, 201014 yr Stay tuned for his 'Decision' video with a bunch of confused Boy Scouts in the background
November 2, 201014 yr Had to post this one before the editors at cleveland.com notice. A fire burned down a playground in South Euclid that was built with handicap accessibility elements. Cleveland.com broke the story and the following was placed in the caption of the photo of the smoldering remains of the playground: All that remained Monday night of the special needs children in Bexley Park in South Euclid was the smoldering skeleton. It took South Euclid firefighters about 90 minutes to get the fire, fed by plastic equipment and rubberized shavings, under control. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/11/south_euclid_firefighters_seek.html
