December 19, 201113 yr Here's the video: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7392090n&tag=contentBody;storyMediaBox
December 19, 201113 yr I watched it - Rokakis came off well but an outsider would have to say "why are people stealing siding & stuff off homes in broad daylight? where are the cops?" Otherwise, I think any inner city has similar areas devastated by the foreclosure crisis. Certainly the rust belt and sunbelt areas, I know Chicago does, not sure about other east coast metro's like Philadelphia or Boston. I don't think anyone is being as aggressive with the demolition as Cleveland is, but I think it's the best approach and they're going about it quickly and efficiently.
December 19, 201113 yr I disagree. I thought it was a quality piece. The people in the story that represented Cleveland were classy and well spoken. Put it to you this way: the CLE+ folks were tossing & turning in their beds last night. I cringed when I saw it coming, but 60 Mins put on a quality peice, though, ... it was not Cleveland bashing and, as you note, the distressed homeowners came off as high quality people the audience could empathize with and root for. Rokakis represented local political leadership well, too. He was inteligent and sympathetic... The Banks were painted as the REAL bad guys... which they are!!
December 19, 201113 yr Great advertising for the city. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
December 19, 201113 yr It is what it is. Many in the city have to deal with this in one way or another. The city sure as hell doesn't have the money to tear down everything, so I hope that this piece- in one way or another- helps lead to a greater discussion about more funds from the feds for demolitions. There were at one point over 20,000 properties which are vacant in the city due to the man-made foreclosure crisis. http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2011/05/vacant_homes_for_sale_numbered.html That's HALF THE AMOUNT OF BLIGHTED HOMES IN NEW ORLEANS- due to Hurricane Katrina, which was a natural disaster. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/16/us-blight-neworleans-idUSTRE7BE1PL20111216 So personally, I don't look at this story on 60 minutes like it's a bad thing. The reality of living in the city for many is not all that bright. I'm glad that the story aired- this city was screwed by the banks and can't do it all alone.

I agree, before watching it I was sure they would show some crackhead type of ppl :-D but to my suprise they didn't. If it was only Cleveland facing the foreclosure crisis then maybe it would've been embarrasing, but we aren't. I thought it was a quality piece.
December 19, 201113 yr Some that was filmed in the inner-ring suburbs of Warrensville Heights, Maple Heights, and Bedford. Though the only suburb mentioned by name--Cleveland Heights--only appeared briefly on screen. Anyone figure out which CH street that was? I would have to believe that there are probably several CH streets where multiple homes might be up for demolition, especially in the northern part of the city near East Cleveland (which incidentally was not shown as far as I could tell, but could have had a 15 minute special all on its own). Is there somewhere online where all of these homes scheduled for demolition are listed?
December 19, 201113 yr ^I don't think there are many streets in CH with multiple demos. I imagine CH was mentioned specifically because its much better known outside of the area than those others and because the demos there are particularly surprising given all the high value properties that still transact there. I believe most of the demos in the county are under the auspices of the land bank, and you can see its entire list of property holdings and their plans (including demo) here: http://www.cuyahogalandbank.org/properties.php?order=status
December 19, 201113 yr I saw that brief showing of CH. It looked like a bunch of 2 family homes, so my guess would be the area west of Taylor and south of Euclid Heights Blvd.

December 19, 201113 yr It appears as if my favorite radio station V107.3 has changed to "the Wave" which is a Jazz/easy listening format. Rather than rant about how angry I am about losing this right after 92.3 also switched from alternative, I'll just ask: does anyone know any alternative stations similar to V107.3 in the Cleveland market?

December 19, 201113 yr So it officially switched over today? That stinks. I listen to a lot of college radio from JCU, B-W, and CWRU but it's not the same because none of those stations broadcast exclusively in the AAA format 24/7 like V107 did.
December 20, 201113 yr It's pretty pathetic that Cleveland does not have a decent modern rock format station at this time. Especially since Cleveland is supposed to be the rock & roll city! I actually don't think that the city has had a good one since 107.9 was the End. And yes, they still exist in other markets beyond college radio.
December 20, 201113 yr Chicago lost their alternative a while ago...Q101...for a big market, radio here sucks.
December 20, 201113 yr i got satellite free with my new car and never went back, that was 3 years ago now
December 20, 201113 yr Chicago lost their alternative a while ago...Q101...for a big market, radio here sucks. Chicago still has 93.1 XRT, which is modern/indie with some alternative rock "classics" thrown in. Q101 was a crap station that played lame modern rock stuff like Lincoln Park. Chicago also has a great classic rock station (97.1), so to me the radio in Chicago is just fine. It's not as good as when I lived in Southern California though, but certainly way better than Cleveland.
December 20, 201113 yr We do have 100.7, but I seriously think it's terrible these days with its modern hard rock/classic rock hybrid (and crappy talk shows). Can't believe it was once considered the best radio station in the country...definitely not living up to that legacy anymore.
December 20, 201113 yr ...Chicago still has 93.1 XRT, which is modern/indie with some alternative rock "classics" thrown in. ... WXRT was my favorite until V107 showed up. WXRT has a cbs/aol stream that times out every two hours. I could listen all day. The commercials get repetitive, though. I remember lots of Volvo ads. As for WMMS-100.7, they are talk in the morning, talk in the afternoon, and football on Sundays. Talk don't rock!!

For being the number THREE media market in the US, the radio scene in the Windy City is pretty bad.
December 20, 201113 yr On that note, bringing it back to CLE, I also loved the END...circa 1992-1993!!!!
December 20, 201113 yr WENZ had a fantastic playlist to work with: all that material going back to the NYC punk scene (Talking Heads), MTV, another British invasion. The End started in 1991, at the beginning of the Grunge era and coinciding with the release of Nirvana's "Nevermind". For the first time ever, there was a music that didn't sell out to corporate rock!
December 21, 201113 yr WOW Russ Mitchell replacing Romona Robinson at WKYC Channel 3 Russ Mitchell, who has been with CBS News for about 20 years, has been named the lead anchor of WKYC Channel 3's 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. He also will be the Gannett-owned Cleveland station's managing editor for evening news. His first day on the air at the NBC affiliate will be Monday, Jan. 16. The hiring was confirmed today by Channel 3's president and general manager, Brooke Spectorsky. Mitchell is wrapping up his tenure as anchor of the "CBS Evening News'' weekend editions and the "The Early Show'' on Saturday. He's also a national correspondent for "CBS News Sunday Morning,'' the weeknight editions of the "CBS Evening News" and "The Early Show." http://www.cleveland.com/tv-blog/index.ssf/2011/12/russ_mitchell_named_new_6_and_11_pm_anchor_at_channel_3.html

I kinda like the on-air talent at 'XRT -- but then, it includes many of the people who were there when I moved to Chicago 30 years ago.

December 21, 201113 yr Depends on his career objectives, I guess. There's probably something else going on besides his little PR story.

In on air status probably. But I would imagine he took it because he would "be the Gannett-owned Cleveland station's managing editor for evening news." There are only a few national top posts to fill, and based on how he seemed to be bouncing around time slot wise, ie. doing evening and morning show, it is a good idea to diversify.

I'd say it's a sideways move. He gets to be the big fish instead of the weekend guy that nobody sees and also gets to fill in when nobody else wants to be there. He likely has been told or figured out he isn't wanted any further up the CBS national ladder. Edit: Also gets out of correspondent travel.
December 21, 201113 yr ^^^^May be a lifestyle decision. Sounds like he's been a real road warrior in his last position. Maybe he figured he isn't on the track for an anchor job at CBS, so he decided to take a job that let's him come home every night (albeit late night).
December 21, 201113 yr "Mitchell, 51, will have company at the Channel 3 anchor desk. Spectorsky and Channel 3's news director, Rita Andolsen, are narrowing the search for his 6 and 11 p.m. co-anchor." That's strange to me. Wouldn't you actually want someone with his stature and experience to do it by himself? Ramona was just fine on her own.

It seems every local newscast now, including those in New York (where Mitchell also appeared locally) has a co-anchor. It think it's unusual that his predecessor appeared by herself. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

Understood, especially if WKYC wanted to get back to the two-person format anyway, which it seems apparent they did. I guess I thought Ramona going solo worked fine so I assumed that format would continue. Awesome hire anyway (and he's 51? He looks like he could pull off being 35, or maybe that's just me).
December 21, 201113 yr Impressive catch for a local newsroom. Hopefully they let him do some actual journalism, not just read the news with the typical local newsroom, "Awe schucks, this newfangled world we live in confuses me" look and tone that most local anchors seem to adopt. (or possess from the beginning).
January 19, 201213 yr If I may attention-whore myself with a little self promotion: "unofficial tour guide devises her dream weekend in cleveland" From Freshwater Cleveland I've lived in Cleveland for almost 20 years (with the exception of time spent in Los Angeles in the late 90s when I lost my mind). During the bulk of my two decades on the North Coast, I've worked downtown, exploring during my free time every little nook and cranny of this great town. I am a passionate mom, wife, actor, writer and humble home cook. I'm also a huge locavore and food nerd (I don't much care for the term foodie), and I regularly immerse myself in the wonderful gravy that is the local food scene. Thanks to all of the above, I am forever tasked with suggesting to friends things to do, places to go, and restaurants to enjoy.... January 19, 201213 yr Are you kidding me! I read that this morning and thought wow cool etc...... (btw, I got the Fusilli with pork shoulder at Chinato on my inaugural trip there). R&R you just cant leave NorthEast Ohio, Cleveland needs more people like you!

But if she's originally from this area (or anywhere else in the ethnic midwest) I'd suggest sneaking Balaton's in there.
January 20, 201213 yr Thx! She's originally from an upper middle class family in CT and ironically, hates "heavy" food so a few of the places on the stop will likely be just for drinks instead of what I set out in the article. She's a skinny, sushi and cocktails girl more than a beer and sausage person if you know what I mean. She thinks sauerkraut and sausage are disgusting for example.
January 20, 201213 yr Hey R&R, you she were also already scolded after the article for not mentioning the Velvet Tango Room.
January 20, 201213 yr where is the scolding? I had about 12 more places listed, I had a word count limit and some things had to get cut for space.
January 20, 201213 yr where is the scolding? I had about 12 more places listed, I had a word count limit and some things had to get cut for space. Well, the last comment (I saw it yesterday). Claudia Young · Hunter College "no vtr?" Also the owner of City Budha thinks they offended you..... Of course eveybody thinks you should have mentioned something you didnt... Isnt it supposed to be your list afterall....?
January 20, 201213 yr I see them now. They weren't there yesterday. Honestly, I really didn't want to put places on there that I actually never go, which is why I did not include the museums, and why I would not include VTR. VTR is a place I would refer visitors to, but not go to myself.
