Yes, they are. Sun is basically their print edition. I sure do miss working for them when they were just a newspaper. Worst thing that ever happened to Sun (and the PD) was getting bought by Advance Publications.

Here’s Why We Don’t Know Much about Tamir Rice

December 2, 2014 by aoscruggs

Coverage of Tamir Rice Shooting Exposes Rift Between Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com

It’s been more than a week since police fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice, but the public knows almost nothing about his friends, his hobbies, his personality – nothing about him. And, until last night, we didn’t know anything about the police officer who killed him either.

If ever a profile of Tamir ever gets published will largely be determined by the relationship between Cleveland’s newspaper, The Plain Dealer, and the digital company, the Northeast Ohio Media Group. Despite sharing the cleveland.com platform, the print and digital companies are separate entities. Both, however, are owned by Advance Newspapers.

Very interesting article.  From this untrained eye it makes lots of sense given what you see on Cleveland.com (a headline and no facts in the article).

you can tell too.  I feel like I never recognize the author when i read a .com story.  I have been avoiding the site for the most part (generally only reading litt and Michelle), but im really considering cutting them off completely and hoping that the paper/site implodes.

I appreciated this line: The [PD] employees fear that cleveland.com is using, and destroying, what used to be a strong, respected Plain Dealer brand.

Perhaps naively, I'm amazed how quickly Cleveland.com has transformed itself into formulaic clickbait trash. They seem to reach new lows every couple months.

Yep.  They are embracing the Buzzfeed mentality.  Things like the article about Tamir's dad get the attention, but there are tons of other examples.  For example, little things like taking Terry Pluto's regular Sunday column and splitting it into 3 separate articles, make their motives so transparent.  Sacrifice journalistic integrity and the reader experience for a minimal gain in the short term.  Problem is they don't seem to realize the long-term implications behind these moves.

Bahaha

Wow, poor knowledge all the way around -- of local geography and the meaning of the word "landlocked."

This is what the cle.com gets when they hire cute little cubs fresh out of J-school, finding the cream of the crop with Wal-Mart level pay.

He didn't know what "DWB" means either.  Hell, I used that expression in a staff meeting about 20 years ago.

WTAM 1100 keeps reporting that Eric Garner died after being "restrained." I just thought that was interesting which media outlets are using which terminology, ie "restrained" vs "chokehold."

This makes me laugh every time I see Wayne's reaction.  She really had no idea.  About anything.  Ever.  And yet our top 20 television market outlet hired her as an anchor.

Oh she definitely had an idea. Perhaps it slipped out, but you can tell she felt uncomfortable and then started laughing. I don't buy her apology stating complete ignorance. C'mon

I just don't understand what about Lady Gaga singing The Sound of Music warrants her description?

Exactly.

Yet, to be fair, the last time I heard that word was in a parody of a certain David Lee Roth song, so that would have been thirty years ago.

That split second when he looks at the camera, and his expression just says "Oh, she's definitely fired."

How soon we forget, Wayne.

that's so sad. she was so young. That said, I can't believe how petty and small minded some of the comments are about her on cleveland.com. Talk about sour grapes!

If she loved the city, and had respect for It, why didn't she have the courage to stay?  Basically, she stuck around for a while until a better job came around.  How does that make one important to a city?  We demean corporate executives who fly in and fly out on a whim.  Why is a news reporter different?

The "courage to stay."

Oh man. It can really get depressing when you realize that there are just so many insufferable a-holes on this planet.

Akron finally has their own music, art and culture magazine. It's called The Devil Strip. The first issue was last month and it is available online and in print at select locations.

Well, the "journalists" at cleveland.com are at their finest today. Not only was there a front page NONSTORY about a girl who didn't get an offer from a biotech job (which is hardly newsworthy) but now there is a SECOND front page article, and a scheduled forum no less to discuss this situation.

Dress professionally for an Interview or don't show up, even if everyone there is wearing t-shirts and jeans, and do not whine about it on the Internet if you want a good job someday -  there, controversy settled.

Inventing a scandal is all this shitrag has going for it, and it's about as newsworthy as LEBRON BABY MOMMA SHARON REED

Actually this story is sort of interesting because clearly she tried to pull off a Kelly Blazek style internet mob attack, and it is backfiring.  It ties into the stereotype that this particular age group has an entitled mentality.  Being from Oberlin doesn't help since the road blocking incidents have given them a negative reputation.

Unfortunately for her she has pretty much trashed her job prospects in the near term over this.

^well, she is from New Jersey :|

Watch it, you!!!!

I wouldn't go so far as to say she has trashed her job prospects.  In fact, she might get an offer out of (perhaps misplaced) sympathy.  We live in a funny world.  Just take the example of the Indiana Pizzeria which came out in favor of the 'right to discriminate bill' and was interviewed on Fox.  The 'go fund me' site set up for those folks raised close to a million dollars....... I assume to make up for all the lost business it would have got catering weddings with Pizza but for its interview on Fox......

When they went digital first and started to emphasize backpack journalism the speed to post online seems to have trumped most else.

The writers self-edit, don't they?  Wasn't there a memo telling the writers to have their spouses proofread for them?

It's really getting comical.  The picture has zero to do with the story.

^ The story is about him being charged in the county court of common pleas, which is located in the Justice Center. Perhaps not the best choice of picture, but I think it's unfair to say it has "zero" to do with the story.

Does anyone have any insight over what happened with Macie Jepson and Channel 5? I started watching Good Morning Cleveland a few years ago, and I cannot believe how many changes they make to that show. I loved Macie! I hope she is picked up by another station here in Cleveland. I also noticed Trent McGill is gone from there too, and they have a new weather girl from Alaska or something - Janessa, I think.

There is a time and place for criticism of the GOP and their conduct and behavior the last 8 (going on 25) years. But this article makes cleveland.com, and frankly Cleveland, look bad, lame and pathetic. It should not have been published.

I totally disagree that this makes Cleveland look lame and pathetic as you state: how?  Because he references Cleveland skeletons that that we're not supposed to utter, like Cleveland's "butt of jokes" status (sadly, we still are at least in some misguided quarters) and the Kucinich recall (he was, but he grew as a politician and as a man to become an internationally admired peace activist  and humanitarian not afraid to criticize those in his own Democratic party, including the President).  A sign of growth and maturity is the ability to sometimes laugh at oneself.  Cleveland has many problems but is improving by the day and is being nationally recognized as such.  I'd like to think we're past the days where, collectively as a city, we would freak out at the least little negative comment or put-down by a non-Clevelander.

I actually thought this piece was quite witty... It's called "satire" dude.  And it was more a shot at Republicans than at Cleveland ... and I'm more than cool with that.

Generally weak.  Liberal equivalent of Mike Polk.
