Here's a place where the PeeDee's anti-comments policy allows them to ignore some interesting background:

Judge Saffold's daughter gets arrested (and the judge does not) after a DV incident.

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2016/08/cuyahoga_county_judge_shirley.html

Math suggests it's the same daughter who took "credit" for the PeeDee comments that got Saffold removed from the Sowell case.

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/04/judge_shirley_strickland_saffo_2.html

^ I remember that little scandal.  She was posting comments from the judge chambers.  Blamed it on her daughter.  Idiot!

That’s a bad idea because the clecom writers love to spin stories to fit agendas that often don’t exactly match up with reality.

Naymik’s columns on the feud between the “Hi-Low” (now DBA Marjee’s) and “Sweethearts”  (now probably DBA “Fli-By-Nyte Ultra Lounge”), previously discussed here, were the classic example.  He clearly was shilling for the Sweetheart’s people and omitted relevant facts like their lack of a valid liquor permit and the neighborhood’s near-universal disdain for their operations.

There are ways to combat that besides letting the peanut gallery spew off nonsense in the comment thread.  It is interesting that the PD curated the comments on the article regarding O'Brien's retirement.  hey believe that veiled racist and homophobia is OK but don;t dare say bad things about St. O'Brien.

There are ways to combat that besides letting the peanut gallery spew off nonsense in the comment thread.

How?  The story-linked comments are the only place where accountability isn't handled by the fox guarding the henhouse.

The PeeDee has a "reader omdubsman" that posted an "opinion piece" the US Supreme Court found libelous.

Whenever I become discouraged by the usually ignorant, fearful, clueless commenters on Cleveland dot com, I browse some other city’s newspaper website and am encouraged that their commenters are just as silly.  It’s not exclusively a Cleveland thing, which I know, but it’s nice to be reminded.

In this case, I was browsing the Portland, Oregon paper as I’m going there for the first time next week. Just reading these comments, you’d think Portland was a gang war zone:

I just posted in the suburban crime thread, sometimes the real story is buried in the comments.

To make things better, it looks like the original article was written by the booster organization of the town/area in question and basically qualifies as what is politely called "sponsor content".  This could be why clecom doesn't allow comments on such.

Annnnd.......making this observation is the last thing I show as posting on "viafoura" or whatever the comments sections are called, and now my account is suspended LOL.

Josh Trust was hired as a Vice President and the Chief Revenue Officer of Advance Ohio, the controlling company for Cleveland.com, in late September 2017. His arrival was trumpeted with a Q&A on the site with his thoughts on digital media, local reporting, advertising, sales and revenue.

He lasted less than four months on the job.

More destruction of democracy...

Today is a sad day for journalism in Cleveland. Advance offered voluntary buyouts to PD mangers and Cleveland.com staffers with 15 years of service. We're sad for the losses this will mean both in our guild newsroom and at the Cleveland.com office.

Glazen wants to 'Eat, Drink, Haggle'

As founder of Cleveland-based Glazen Creative Studios, Alan Glazen was behind the camera as a producer of documentary films for business and television for 15 years.

Now, as founder of GlazenUrban – an investment and management organization focused on Cleveland neighborhoods and districts – Glazen often finds himself in front of the television cameras, and he’s having a blast.

“I used to produce television, but all of a sudden people are producing television with me in it,” he said. “You know, my face is probably better suited for radio. But it’s a lot more fun and a lot easier than being on the other side of the camera.”

Glazen’s latest TV appearance was as the local “wingman” for Lara Spencer – a contributor to ABC’s “Good Morning America” and creator, host and executive producer of HGTV’s “Flea Market Flip” – in her new Travel Channel series, “Eat, Drink, Haggle.”

The program follows Spencer, known for her love of bargain hunting at flea markets, as she seeks out a city’s best-kept secrets of food, cocktails and flea market deals. In the first episode, which premiered April 21 and has aired several times since, Glazen takes her around Cleveland and shows her what makes the city special.

I recently met a woman in Wash DC, a very Wash DC type, who, the instant she figured out I could do nothing for her, "moved on" dismissively.  That's fine, I understand time is limited; but the name rang a bell. Susan Goldberg.

Ah, yes, one-time editor of the PD. Did people in Cleveland like her, professionally, I mean?

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

A friend of mine used to babysit and housewatch her place in Cleveland or Shaker Heights, and they got along well.

...that's all I got.

I enjoyed him in the eighties and into the nineties but after that he became a cranky old man. Cleveland was changing and he thought it all wasn't for the better because nearly all of the places that he knew when he was a boy were gone. He lamented the loss of downtown shopping and he grew up on the East Side so maybe that's where his disappointment came from. The West Side's redevelopment, by contrast, has been amazing and so has downtown's, but he seemed woefully ignorant of both. Yet that didn't stop him from opining, and few things bother me more than people who have baseless opinions. For some like Dick Feagler it's impossible for them to say "I don't know."

Columnist Dick Feagler, voice of Clevelanders for five decades, dead at 79

Now that is a kick to the gut. The Feagler report was something my parents and I watched together weekly for years.

Cleveland's Royko.

That sucks. I enjoyed Feaglers commentary. Maybe conservative and old fashioned, but he and his wife surprisingly became big allies for the LGBTQ community, and he was Grand Marshall of the the CLE Pride Parade 2004.

The new cleveland.com homepage is a sloppy mess.

Pretty much true of cleveland.com in general.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Whoever designed the new cleveland.com should be fired.  The basic web development principle is that architecture drives design.  I have difficulty believing this new design was remotely driven by best practice.  There is no possible way the web developer conducted a usability study or it would have not turned out so poorly.  Best practice shows that people typically read left to right...my eye wonders all over the place trying to figure out what to focus.  I though it would be hard to get worse than the previous design but cleveland.com somehow did the impossible by making an already awful architecture and design even worse.  Now Cleveland is stuck with this mess for the next several years.

This was probably a decision that came down from Gannett. They own several regional news sites and they all have the same UI. I think that the old cleveland.com looked dated, but the new one is just a total mess, at least on desktop.

I'm not sure which site developer put less thought into their development process, cleveland.com or the city of Cleveland website.

Hmm, so I thought, maybe the page is just designed for mobile, as a lot of websites are moving towards a "mobile first" design philosophy, but the page is all messed up on mobile.

the x preview feature makes me think only one thing, they have tweaked the site to move to a paywall at some point. the nydailynews site did some similar tweaking after mort zuckerman sold it and then they then quickly moved to a paywall. ugh hope im wrong.

i think cle dot com, along with the similar nj dot com, oregon got com, etc. websites are all still owned and run by si newhouse’s advance media empire, are they not?

Correct. Gannett owns the Cincy Enquirer.

Let me rephrase my statement.  I can'r believe ownership would allow such a poorly developed website(s) be launch to represent their brand.

i see oregonlive has the new look, but nj.com still has the old look. i guess advance is rolling it out.

I think so.  I got suspended on cle.com too when I made a smartass comment about how an oregonlive article should have been tagged as "sponsor content".

NJ.com must be the last to go. NOLA.com received the wonderful redesign as well.

For the first time in its history, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's editorial staff will not be located downtown. Lots of strange things happening at the PD, not the last of which is that it still can't figure out how to be a daily, or at least six-day-a-week newspaper even though seven other Northeast Ohio newspapers do it, and with much smaller circulations....

I suppose it's unfair to call the cleveland.com staff a bunch of soccer moms with a fondness for lurid crime, but that's how I feel ever time they miss something HUGE.  This time it's the State of California law suit against Sherwin-Williams over lead paint. This suit and follow-ons have the potential to bankrupt the company. Meanwhile it's crickets at the Plain Dealer. Do they even HAVE a business editor?

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

You know, if a group of former PD reporters (the many competent ones I know who took buyouts to get away from that circus) all banded together to start a new newspaper, they'd put the PD out of business within a year.

I really really want to support those working there and local journalism...but MAN they make it hard with these ridiculous business decisions.

1 - cleveland.com and the PD are two different entities and have separate bosses. Cleveland.com doesn't handle the business section. I'm not sure who the current business editor is, but yes the PD does have one. Michelle Jarboe, Teresa Murray, Ginger Christ, John Funk, Brie Zeltner, etc. all work for the PD. Chris Quinn runs cleveland.com while George Rodrigue handles the PD. There's some redundancy and the parties don't really get along. These groups don't even work in the same building and haven't for many years. When reading bylines, you'll probably notice that the more professional stories are almost always bylined by PD writers. The PD doesn't do much in the way of clickbait. That's cleveland.com's job although PD writers have felt pressure on that end.

2 - The PD ran a story on the lead lawsuit. It was the lead story in Tuesday's business section. It was an AP story but that's probably because the ruling was out of town. The PD covered that story a lot when it first happened 13 years ago. This case dragged on forever which is why it fell out of the spotlight.

PD invested in that huge printing facility at the worst possible time.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'd swear I was told their content was identical.  You just motivated me to subscribe to the PD (real).
