I didn't read the article, but I will say that ADA ramps have a surprising propensity for creating trip hazards.  There are a couple on Euclid you have to be real careful of.  At my business, we have an ADA ramp at our entrance which caused several people to trip within the first couple weeks we were open.  We ended up having to install a rail around the entire thing, turning our entrance into something akin to a cattle chute.  It's messed up ingress/egress to our tasting room ever since.  We've had one customer in a wheelchair in 3.5 years of being open.

cleveland.com has won it's well earned race to the bottom.

A while back someone (maybe a member of this forum?) commented on another site that the PD (including cleveland.com) is "written and edited for people who don't buy newspapers."

An astute observation.

Two observations:

1. City’s are required by law to have a plan to make their sidewalks ADA compliant. They will be sued if they do not create and execute said plan.

2. ADA curb ramps have very detailed construction requirements, and I can say with 99% certainty that the ones mentioned were not properly constructed. Many contractors do not know, or do not care when installing them.

The latest reminder that Cleveland no longer has a real newspaper. The tone-deafness and lack of understanding of story prominence and newsworthiness here is mind-blowing....

This is pathetic!

It's to be expected. Fill a newspaper with actual journalists and you get actual reporting. Gut the paper of journalists and you don't get actual reporting. What DO you get? Today's Plain Dealer.

Just to be fair though - it's really not their fault. The world around the daily paper has irreversibly changed. We've chosen to get our news from other sources and advertisers have followed suite. If we still preferred to get our news the old fashioned way newspapers would still be filled with great reporting. It's really only a matter of time until the US has a handful of great papers and the rest will just fade away.

As an old white guy reading the morning paper has been one of my guilty pleasures for decades. Not so much anymore. Sucks to get old.

Perhaps this topic has been fully-vetted elsewhere but just in case it hasn’t... I’ve been surprised at the lack of coverage around what I foresee as a tax revenue apocalypse for Cleveland as well as many other large cities.  But focusing on Cleveland, isn’t the city in a doomsday scenario with the work from home world we are now in?  I don’t think this is just a fad.  I think work from home is here to stay for a lot of people, especially high-earners / income tax payers.  This tax revenue is going to stay in the suburbs at a suddenly much higher rate than anyone expected.  Isn’t this backbreaking for a city like Cleveland which depends so much on tax revenue from out of city workers?  It seems like a revenge of the suburbs dynamic.  Of course so goes the city, eventually so goes the suburbs. If there was a time for necessary regionalism, isn’t that time now?  I feel like Cleveland is the Titanic and it just hit the iceberg and no one thinks it’s a big deal and is too distracted to care anyway.  But the ship is sinking and banding together as a region long ago might have kept it afloat.  Too late now?  Am I being way too pessimistic?  I hope so.

I share your concern. With Covid-19 and now this, Cleveland and many other cities just got a 1-2 punch to the head.  While other cities will likely recover, I am a bit worried about Cleveland.  But we are digressing.  Getting back on topic, I canceled my subscription to the PD a couple years ago.  Occasionally, I pick up a copy of Sunday PD at the store, but it seems to be a waste of $3.

Nothing we haven't talked about before, but it's nice to see the issue discussed in more settings. Hasan Minhaj's show on Netflix covers the death of local newspapers by vulture funds.

Scene Is Closing Comment Sections on Stories as of Today

It’s a shame that disrespectful trolls make this a necessary step for so many local news platforms.

Its a shame that Sam Allard and crew at Scene write such inflammatory pieces. They deserve all comments thrown their way and - as per the norm - radicals like those have no tolerance for opposing opinions.

Maybe they felt it was less about tolerating opposing opinions, and more about the bots, trolls, and idiots making for unproductive dialogue. There was never anything of substance posted about the article itself, just ramblings about their perception of Scene's political leaning. If that's the "opposing opinion" being silenced, then good riddance.

Does anyone here have a Cleveland Biz Journal subscription?  Can you recommend?

I already have a Crain’s subscription and am wondering if the content is different enough to make another subscription worthwhile.

I just saw a Facebook ad for the very same.  Had never heard of it before.

Cleveland Biz Journal is owned by Advance Local. Not really interested in supporting their growth in the area.

How Blogger Ken Prendergast Became a Must-Read Scoop Machine on the Cleveland Development Beat

Vince Grzegorek  Jul 17, 2020 at 3:39 pm

On his NEOtrans blog, Prendergast broke the news in mid-October that Sherwin-Williams would be staying in Cleveland, weeks before Cleveland.com or Crain's published stories, and later broke the news that Sherwin-Williams would build its HQ on Public Square, again, weeks before the established media outlets in town. (Sherwin itself finally officially announced the news on Feb. 6.)

It was by far the biggest scoop of Prendergast's blogging career.

I subscribed, hoping to encourage better business coverage in the area.  It's ... what should I say? ... better than cleveland.com; but it's is not operated by people who LOVE business news, which means their sense of what's really hard business news isn't that acute. There's not enough specifically Cleveland news, but quite a bit of national stuff of a business nature reported by other Advance locations. That's ok, I guess; but it's not what I was hoping for.

I'm giving them time to get better.

I posted this in local celebrities - but probably should've put it here..

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember the old weather board that is pictured in the link! - seeing it brought back childhood memories.   Goddard was THE weatherman if you grew up in Cleveland - for many years. And there's something special about a hometown celebrity that made you feel like you knew him personally, even though you didn't.  Maybe because you often watched him 5 times a week.  I remember my Dad "shushing" me because his weather forecast "was on".  Can't help but to feel nostalgic this evening thinking about the familiar faces on Cleveland TV from those years.   Mr. Goddard was a class act with a career in Cleveland media that's unlikely to be surpassed by anyone.  Here's to the "Woollybears" and "mostly sunny" skies.

A term that is no longer acceptable, but should it be a fireable offense?

Yes.

It hasn't been acceptable for decades and shouldn't have been acceptable, well, ever.  It was always a term denoting "other" which is why it was used - to marginalize and humiliate.  If someone is still using it, they are seriously out of touch-almost willfully so.

It can't be too difficult to change the name of the organization.

I’m sure it’s not, but I’m not a member so who am I to tell them what to do.

They are the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Maybe it’s a good time for the discussion to be had but I’ll let them decide.

This guy was fired over this? Career over?

terms like colored, negro are old and out of date terms but someone makes a misstep using one and it’s game over?...literally.  Are these terms “banned”..

person of Color is OK?  Isn’t Kamala being celebrated as the first person of color on a ticket?
maybe he read the person of color term and said wrong? Whatever..

harsh punishment.

As an African American I wouldn’t have necessarily fired him but he would’ve been suspended or something. There’s no excuse for being a news reporter at one of the biggest news Radio stations in this market and not knowing the rules. The AP Stylebook tells you that it can only be used when referring to specific organizations (as in the NAACP). This isn’t some ham & egger. You’re a news reporter. For a very big radio station. No excuses. You should know better

Edited by inlovewithCLE

I also think suspension would have been the appropriate punishment.  Clearly this is an offensive term. It requires willful ignorance to “not know that”, especially for someone who works in media. That said, if you put a microphone in front of anyone’s face long enough they will eventually say something stupid.  We do need to forgiving of human mistakes. A person shouldn’t lose their job over a mistake like this.  There is a huge difference between saying one stupid thing and repeatedly saying stupid, offensive things. (Ahem.) I have no idea who this person is, so I don’t know if there’s a history there. Certainly a REAL apology would be important. None of this “if you were offended” garbage where the person pretends to have no idea where what they said was wrong.

Pro tip: if your apology starts with “if you were offended,” it isn’t a real apology.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Some context from a former employee:

Edited by Enginerd

Doesn't WTAM host the Rush Limbaugh Show? If so, its not really a decent station. But I will give them credit though for firing this guy, who deserved to be fired. That said, who is Kyle Cornell? He claims he meant no ill-will by the term. Is he just a clueless guy?  Or a guy who had a slip of the tongue as "person of color" is an acceptable phrasing? Or is he an @sshole who made the slip because he talks that way in general with his friends off the air? Or is he an @sshole who made the statement intentionally? I never listen to the station so I am not familiar with him. But its NOT easy to make such a mistake, so I'm leaning towards my last two possibilities.......In any event, he deserved to be canned.

I still can’t get over Cleveland.com asking $100 per year for a digital subscription. Especially after they chased out all the experienced reporters. For reference, I pay $29/yr for a digital subscription to the Washington Post, which gives us a whole bunch more real content.

Cleveland.com must really be hurting for money.   Since they removed comments, I have not been accessing the site as often. And now with many subscriber-exclusive articles, I will be accessing it even less.

Right?! I was more than willing to pay the ~$20 per month for the Plain Dealer. But how obnoxious is it to destroy the paper and then start charging people for Cleveland.com. They’re insane.

It seems like every Cleveland business or development article is now paywalled or on their sister site but I’m able to see their rankings of Moriah Carey’s top 70 songs. Beside sports their no longer is a reason for me to access it!
