I have no plans to charge. Besides I think knowing what's going on in your community should be available to everyone for free. The added bonus is you're getting it first from me anyway. ?

The WaPo definitely would if it could be shown that people with particular political views had pizza brand preferences.

Still from the show “Route 66,” episode #27, filmed in Cleveland

I think there were 2 or 3 episodes filmed in Cleveland, even though Route 66 didn't go through Cleveland.

Cleveland Documenters Civic Reporter Application

Neighborhood Connections is seeking a dogged Civic Reporter to do accountability reporting on local government as part of our Cleveland Documenters team. Accountability journalism includes investigative reporting, fact-checking and digging into public data.

Consider applying if:

You want to be a “civic translator” who produces local news and information that promotes civic engagement and makes accountability accessible to everyday people;

You have a passion for digging into and researching public documents and getting answers to some of the most pressing questions facing local communities;

You are not satisfied with the status quo in Cleveland and are ready to do something about it.

You like to ask tough questions and are not easily intimidated by those with powerful positions. You are excited by the idea of producing “A Guide to Cleveland City Council: How does City Council work?” and doing the kind of tenacious reporting that makes a difference in the lives of Cleveland residents.

Earlier this morning the Cleveland Business Journal (which STILL isn't sure what it wants to be but is getting better at it) posted an article on a proposed 443K sq ft warehouse to be built on spec in Streetsboro.  Now the article is gone.

Might they have broken an embargo? Violated a confidence? Anybody know anything about this?

i see the other sister advancenet sites, like nj and oregon, have similar paywall articles. not quite as bad as cle dot bomb though.

great, so they completely destroyed the peedee and its all just utter crapola now.

when people dont have options, or are not willing to pay for moderated media, with strong reporting and fact checked editorial oversight, you get over reliance on free junk like tweets. and that gets you dangerous nonsense like trump and his russian boosted election fraud lies and the whole world of disinfo.

The "product" they generate is awful.  They have the nerve to push pieces on how "great" their "journalism" is and how much it is needed.  When they churn out the printed garbage, much of it is either recycled from stuff that appeared online days earlier or pulled in from all over the country.  Even the stories that do get posted to the website now are old and report events that happened days before the stories were posted.  Then the stories stay posted for days if not a week or longer.  Of course they also have a cycle of re-posting old stories that were up months ago covering old malls, restaurants and other nostalgia pieces, over and over again Whenever they decide re-post these stories, they don't even bother to update grossly out-dated material.  All of this is supposedly in prime, main web page space.

This is what happens when most of the staff gets cut.  Not enough warm bodies to write current news stories or editors to proof read the stuff that does get written.  Most of the good and experienced columnists are gone--pushed out the door, retired or on to better media markets.  To attempt to have a bare minimum of contributors, they get the greenest of the green churned out by journalism programs that results in proving just how inexperienced the contributors are.

And if all that isn't bad enough, they recently raised the price of the PD at the newsstand.  It is now $5 on Sunday and $3 the rest of the week.

A couple of years ago, somebody posted the locations of where the members of the editorial board reside.  I don't think that any actually lived in the city.  Then there is Suddes who somehow has the insight of being "closely" viewing the goings on in Cleveland from his residence in Athens Ohio.

@KJP When a local paper picks up an AP article, who is responsible for the headline? This one is frustrating because it doesn’t actually match the content of the article.

Headline: “US will be able to vaccinate all adults by end of May, Biden says”

Article: “President Joe Biden said Tuesday that the U.S. expects to take delivery of enough coronavirus vaccines for all adult Americans by the end of May, two months earlier than anticipated, as his administration announced that drugmaker Merck & Co. will help produce rival Johnson & Johnson’s newly approved shot.”

Taking delivery is not the same as vaccinating all adults. Someone who only read the headline would be misinformed.

True---and in this case being misinformed could have dire consequences. People may stop wearing masks and acting safely at the end of May because the PD told them everyone is vaccinating at the end of May. Just another example of $hitty cleveland.com has become.

@Boomerang_Brian The editor/headline editor of the publication picking up the wire story usually has the discretion to write their own headline for that story, as well as to reduce the length of the wire story (or add a local angle to it) so that it fits into their newspaper's news hole or online format. I've written more than my share of articles when my own editor (to say nothing of other editors in the chain that picked up my story) clearly had not read more than a paragraph into the story before writing a headline. And other headlines had to fit the column(s) width available. The editor had to publish only what could fit, including picking words that didn't leave more than a space or two at the end of a line.

More utterly laziness and sloppiness from the PD / cleveland.com. Waiting on Michael Stanley to die, they had the caption ready to go except the final details of on what day and how old he was on that day. When he did die, they were so excited, they released with image and caption, but didn't bother to fill in the blanks.

Journalism is really going down the toilet. That is why I canceled my PD subscription a couple years ago.

I wish CLE had a decent local paper again...

Anyway, sad news.  He was part of Cleveland’s fabric.

For those who don't already, check out https://www.thelandcle.org/ - they are still small, but have great quality and do some real in depth reporting by local journalists on stories that I think would interest alot of people on this forum, including development. Best of all, they are non-profit. There is still some local quality out there.

They do a great job.  I'd also recommend donating to them as no subscription is required.

This is my favorite song by Michael Stanley. In 1993, Mr. Gee bought our home on Rivers Edge Drive in Bainbridge that we built in 1978. He gave me a copy of the CD which contained this song. The song reminds me of that house where I lived from age 11 to 26. And that final year, I lived in that 3,400-square-foot house by myself while it was on the market and my parents had moved into their new condo. I dream about that house almost every night. Michael Stanley lived in the house for seven years. RIP Michael. Thanks for adding a soundtrack to part of my life....

Thanks for the memory. I have one question: who is Mr. Gee? You mention that Michael Stanley lived in the house, so is Mr. Gee a nickname for Michael Stanley?

An ironic and haunting  song to bid goodbye to a local guy who had his moments on the national  stage but was more of a legend in Cleveland than anywhere else.  Some of us of a certain age in “his town” heard Michael’s music many times  in the soundtrack of growing up.

We might’ve missed out on much of his music from later years - we had grown up and moved on to other concerns - but many stayed connected via Michael’s media work particular his drive time radio show on WNCX.  But we’ll remember those MSB hits that Kid Leo used to play on WMMS.

Michael - and those days, gone too quickly, for sure.

I believe that is his "real" last name.   Michael Stanley Gee

His voice is etched into my brain after countless Cavs games during the LeBron years. A legend in play by play.

We've lost a lot of local media and legends the last year and change.😐

RIP Joe.  Fond memories from my childhood.  I can still hear him screaming BINGO whenever Bobby Bingo Smith hit a jumper.

It's a shame there was no championship during his tenure with the Cavs.

Sorry for the silly question but I haven't thought about this in such a long time....

Does anyone know where I can buy a print version of Crain's Cleveland?

Channel 19 is bit out of touch here in the article:

Northeast Ohio gets ‘game changing’ investment for high-tech startups

Ohio’s Third Frontier program will invest $46 million into 100 small companies

The story is about making CLE a hightech center in medicine. They praise the company "CoverMyMeds" and the story photo has a giant building of theirs.

They say, "An example of how the money works: In 2008, CoverMyMeds was a small Twinsburg health care software company working with insurance companies. It received Third Frontier funds and recently sold to McKesson for more than $1 billion and now employs thousands of Ohioans...."   That part is all good and well.  But then they end the sentence with "building a new headquarters in Columbus."   So this small Cleveland company got lots of public money, grew significantly, then left Cleveland for Columbus. So let's profile this company on a story to make Cleveland a medtech hub!"  https://www.cleveland19.com/2021/03/18/northeast-ohio-gets-game-changing-investment-high-tech-startups/

Did a bunch of people from cleveland.com move over to Channel 19?

There was a review of John Boehner's book by Sabrina Eaton on today's cleveland.com.  Just about everything she cited came from the first fifty pages or the dust jacket.  I hate to sling accusations around, but I don't think she actually read the book.

For those who listened to "The End" back in the 90's,  we lost Sean "Bull" Robertson today (apparently from COVID according to one Facebook post).   He was a staple on Cleveland radio then, and after radio ended up behind the bar and several local establishments, most recently a long run at Lincoln Park Pub in Tremont.   He will be missed greatly.

Looks like WKSU is being merged under the Ideastream / WCPN (local NPR) organization. Will be run by Ideastream. They are discussing opening an Akron bureau as part of the move.

Northeast Ohio’s two NPR stations WKSU, WCPN expected to merge operations

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2021/09/clevelands-two-npr-stations-wksu-wcpn-expected-to-merge-operations.html

(Excerpt, quite a bit more detail in the article, which is not paywalled)

The Kent State Board of Trustees will consider an action authorizing the university to enter into an agreement with Ideastream Public Media for the management and operation of WKSU and its six regional stations at its meeting on Wednesday, Kent State spokesperson Eric Mansfield confirmed on Monday.

“As two of Northeast Ohio’s leaders in news and information, WKSU and Ideastream Public Media have long discussed partnerships, collaborations and other ways to build on the decades of award-winning journalism produced by both organizations,” he said in a statement. “These discussions were reinforced by the results of an analysis conducted with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The results encouraged WKSU and Ideastream Public Media to leverage combined resources and expertise for the growth and expansion of public media service in Northeast Ohio.

“Kent State University and Ideastream Public Media are committed to continuing and enhancing quality public radio and award-winning news coverage throughout Northeast Ohio,” he said.

And it will affect WCLV which is also under Ideastream.  Apparently, the classical programming on WCLV will move to 90.3 and NPR programming will move to 104.9.
